This is my Dad and so many of that generation. They loved us deeply but only showed what they somewhat learned from their own Dads. Nowadays, mom and dads want to be friends more than parents. In my opinion, this should wait till after High School. A ton of kids don’t respect their parents because of this.

Jack Arnold reminds me so much of my Dad. Fight traffic, bust His hump all day at work, fight traffic, come home, pay His taxes, watch tv, look at the stars with telescope, etc... get angry and discipline my brothers and i when we got out of line, but over all He loved and provided for us.

Yes, and don't forget China Beach. Even though he was a "Jerk" you couldn't help but feel sorry for Wayne. He wasn't a very good student, wasn't popular didn't have any real friends with the exception of Wort, now the rejection from the Army felt like another failure. He did find his calling working with Jack at The Furniture Shop but I think he sometimes wished he could be successful in life the way Karen and Kevin were.

Thank you for pointing these things out. I am not a father but most of my friends are parents and I live in a world surrounded by family units. At times this can be somewhat difficult but I like to be a role model to young people where I can. My Dad passed away too early but I managed to find other male role models to look up to. Dan Lauria's character was a role model to me at some level. I loved this show and watched it without fail when I was growing up. I think I might be buying the boxset.

What father could honestly admit to their son, " I haven't prepared you for anything. It was 180% from Love Story & Oliver's Story by Erich Segal and in the 1980's Erich did a Book called The Class where Andrew Eliot narrated his story unlike the others, he showed he had so many resources and squandered them. It's hard to believe that Kevin Arnold, Winnie Cooper, and Paul Pfeiffer graduated 50 Years ago. Paul is a Law Partner, Winnie runs an Art Gallery in New York, Kevin became a Magazine Writer, Wort got counselling and closure and he and Winnie see one another at the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Winnie sees her Brother Brian's name, and Wort sees the name of a Friend whom he couldn't save. They have coffee and Wort apologizes to Winnie for being such a jerk. He and Wayne were like Woim and Butch from The Little Rascals. Grade A Bullies, who don't care who they hurt to get what they want. He admitted that during his training, he got harassed alot but he took it because he knew he was getting a dose of his own medicine. He got to talk to alot of other Veterans who tell him, you're lucky you came home alive, you weren't blinded, crippled, and you're not an addict. He even admitted when he saw the two rooms documentary featuring Elton John & Bernie Taupin, and heard the real story behind Daniel, he broke down and cried.

This is why he was extra hard on Kevin later on because he didn’t want him to end up like his brother

I saw Wayne as a jerk when I saw this as a kid, but then when I rewatched it as an adult, he was just a kid who was trying to find his way in the world and had life kick him in the teeth over and over again.

American history is really interesting, it`s always going from being unstoppable to being miserable, and vice versa. America won WW2, created nuclear bomb, became first ever country where almost every citizen was considered middle class and it all was really great until spectacular failure in Vietnam, 70s inflation, rise of crime, drug abuse etc. but in the 90s America became great again - Desert Storm shown total superiority of US military tech, Soviet Union collapsed, almost all of Europe became allies of US, US became frontrunner of IT revolution, Fukuyama announced end of history and Pax Americana was almost obvious. 2008 - Lehmann Brothers fell, crisis and first generation that will be worse off than their parents, opioid abuse is major cause of death, US losing it`s tech leadership to China, NASA cannot send human to space. I wonder when America will show it`s strength again - i bet it will happen sooner or later.

A touching episode but I call BS. At this time they were taking every "warm body" that showed up for a physical. I rather doubt psoriasis would have kept anyone away from Vietnam!
