also you forgot something (or maybe don't know) but since beech is on the softer side of the wood spectrum, it is great for stalls because the slight softness helps to slightly "absorb" the impact and can help cushion stall tricks so they are easier. many regular kendama players probably can vouch for this. as a beginner myself, i find the difference for stall tricks significant, so i do all my bird tricks on my Sweets Boost Radar. and personally i find maple slightly more slippery than beech. maybe that's just my personal preference.

Yo great point! I can't believe I forgot to mention that the softer woods are much better for stalls! Thanks - hopefully folks read the comments to get this context! Really good callout!

I love that you talk about the sound of the clack with different woods. The heavier woods seem to play nicer too, at least to me they seem to lock in stalls easier

Just a little extra info to add to the awesome detailed info given in this video. I come to kendama from a sports and yoyoing background. Maple is also used for high quality and durable fixed-axle yoyos which are more affordable than the exotic woods. In the days before composite materials, ash was known as the “sports wood” and was used for hockey sticks, baseball bats, bows, etc. because it is incredibly strong and slightly flexible. Birch is a very dense type of wood and therefore it is incredibly durable. I know a little bit about wood but you have taught me about how these woods impact the play and feel of a kendama. I am thinking of purchasing my first natty kendama soon. You have rounded out my knowledge base. I enjoy your videos and I think you present excellent detailed information in a fun, practical, and entertaining way. Thank-you, and I hope you are continuing to make videos. Ⓜ️ary

Have you checked out the Sweets Christian Fraser Legend mod? It's a brilliant well thought out kendama that uses the right woods in the right places. For example, the sarrado has beech on top because beech is softer and breaks in really nice for stall tricks like bird, then it has a strip of wenge in the middle for some added weight to help with lunar balance, and then maple on the bottom because it's hard and smooth which feels best for gunslingers. It's my all around favorite go to mod.

great video man! do you have any info or opinions on kens made fully of rosewood, purpleheart or wenge? im looking into trying out heavier kens but ill also try out ash since you said its heavier, im a beginner and have only played beech, maple and rubberwood
@damadojo4129 Жыл бұрын
Yo! Thanks for watching! In my opinion the purple hearts and rosewood are just too heavy for me, but I haven't tried wenge. I have buddies who love their super heavy kens, so try to experiment and get a feel for what fits your play style!
