My husband picked up a spoon for his Dad from Anna while in Oxford, and it was very appreciated. We found this and were thrilled to see the artist at work.

I've carved plenty of spoons (badly). What a great video showing not just techniques, but also the emotional aspect to what it means to give someone something you've made. In case anyone is concerned about the technique where she's pulling the knife towards herself, I'll point out that the blade was pointing away from her and if she slipped she'd jab the handle of the knife in her chest, not the blade. It is a safe method and I use it as well. :)

Hi, I want to ask what kind of wood is the best for spoon carving and what kind of wood are you using in the video? Thanks you.
@Amy-nz8qg10 жыл бұрын
Hello! In the video, Anna is using fresh sycamore, which is often a favourite among spoon carvers. Anna usually carves wild cherry. Make sure you carve the wood while it is still green and select a piece of tree that is knot-free and straight-grained. Forest-grown trees are better because they don't have to buttress themselves against the wind, so are generally less fibrous. I hope that helps!
@fcxzb10 жыл бұрын
Hi again , of curse that helped me to understand more. One more question maybe you know about woods in the Middle East like in Israel and close to her. Woods that could be good for wood carving spoons and there is some way that i can to find by my self? And what more kinds of woods is good for that? Thank you very much , you are helping me!
@Amy-nz8qg10 жыл бұрын
miller My pleasure. If anyone else reading these posts wants to contribute then please do. I am no expert. Most soft fruit trees like almond, peach, mulberry etc. would be very good to carve, especially if they are grown in a sheltered area. Olive wood is very beautiful but very hard, so maybe a project for when you are more practiced!
@fcxzb10 жыл бұрын
Thank you , last question when I complete to carve my spoon I should Buttering something like an oil or something like that on the spoon ? Have a nice day!

miller Use olive/walnut/linseed oil or a mixture of any of those with beeswax!
@ogunkay63567 жыл бұрын
Which type of wood do you use usually?
@Amy-nz8qg7 жыл бұрын
Anna uses a lot of wild cherry and sycamore. As she says in the video, forest-grown, especially naturally regenerated, timber, will be least fibrous and knotty. You want trees that have grown searching for light above them and in a sheltered environment.

I do a bit of spoon carving myself and I was wondering how she dealt with her boobs. I frequently hold my work against my chest like she did but I use a bit of stiff leather as a guard and - more importantly - a pad. I did like how she set up her work space. I particularly liked that wooden brace she had attached to her chopping block. I don't have a vice either and trust me it would make a HUGE difference.

Nice video Amy, good lighting and point of view, however, there are few things that I'm uncomfortable with, I can get past the English accent, but she mumbles a lot and it is hard to understand what she is saying. It's call a draw knife, to be used on a draw stroke. She is asking for an injury when she pushes with that particular knife. Safety may not be a priority to her, viewers may think it is okay to use such tool that way. it's not. I like her hook knife. I look forward to your new posting.
@Amy-nz8qg10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment and I am glad you like the video. I will say however, for any aspiring woodworkers, that Anna is a highly-competent professional and is using a push-knife. To use this tool, you push it down the length of wood: www.garrettwade.com/swedish-push-knife/p/04D04.04/www.garrettwade.com/swedish-push-knife/p/04D04.04/
@kevindesilva80306 жыл бұрын
Cesar ,Unfortunatly your comment is incorrect . Anna is using a Swedish spliting knife which is beveled on both sides and because the handles are set straight out is designed to be pushed or pulled . Anyone with even a limited amout of experience can see from the way she handles her axe that she is a a very compendent craftswomen , using all the tools shown in a safe manor.

God it's good to see a spoon carver that isn't another cis white man. It's a beautiful hobby, but there is that undercurrent of old fashioned patriarchal masculinity which can be really offputting. Having such a male dominated space can be a barrier to other people getting involved in such a great craft.
@andcarp937 жыл бұрын
Slapped Yak what are you talking about? Most spooncarvers I know are the most lovely people and are nowhere near "patriarchal". There is a lot of well respected female carvers like Jane Mickelborough. Never have I heard or read one sexist or chauvinist remark in spooncarving. What you are doing is just plain Man-hating.
