I always carry a pair of thick leather work gloves in my back pocket. They're not only useful to work in to keep from getting splinters or your hands cut, but also for when you're working around the fire handling hot metal cooking utensils, or arranging hot stones or burning firewood. They can also be used to protect your hands when doing stone knapping.

I like it! Good EDC! I always carry a plastic comb for finding ticks etc. I also always carry a pair of fingernail clippers for cutting fishing line, removing skin around splinters or removing that annoying hangnail.

I'm a medic. I'm ex military. So this view may seem .... whatever. But i see all bushcrafters from Dave Canterbury, TA outdoors, etc etc etc never have a basic med kit or mention it. And i do mean basic. I method of stopping a major bleed... look at Tim Wells falling out the tree. Recent videos of people falling out tree stands getting severely injured... some superglue even... Just a thought. I admittedly don't carry a tourniquet cos that can be improvised. But i do carry superglue, insulation or duct tape and some pain meds of sort and allergy tabs cos you never know... allergy tabs have multiple uses. Peace.

Brendon Scott Sounds smart to me. I can’t see taking a firearm, or even an ax, out in the woods without also bringing a trauma kit of some kind. I like carrying a Quik Clot pad and one of those Israeli combat bandages... that said, I have not had to put that gear to the test yet. Anything else you would recommend for major trauma first aid?
@brendoncca
@brendoncca 6 жыл бұрын
Think Survival . Most everything can be improvised. If you got money for a gun and extensive equipment you definitely don't have an excuse to not have quikclot or celox and a certified tourniquet. If you like us here in Africa where the rand dollar exchange is horrendous making things like that extremely expensive. That's where being basic is important. 2 Triangular bandages. Emergency mylar blanket. Duct tape wrapped around your sheath or something at least 5 yards worth. Small tube of super glue (cyanoaculate). Iodine. A rehydration solution. A ziploc bag. I'm truly not a huge fan of the isreali bandage. I would personally not buy it but would use it of given to me. I prefer the Olaes bandage hands down to any other. It has everything you need. It is what i would use for myself and my family. If i could have 2 per person in my family and 2 in each vehicles med kit i would be happy. But the most important piece of equipment is knowledge... don't go attend a first aid course with an instructor that has no real life experience. Don't attend a first aid course with someone that had no knowledge of the outdoors if you are planning to go outdoors. Find the most knowledgeable people. If you only have your local corporate first aid courses it is better than nothing. The rest you can learn from books and KZbin. We have a rule.... it is literally written into our government approved guidelines... that states: These protocols serve as a guideline and do not replace sound clinical judgement. Anything i state here is not intended to be used out of correct as merely a discussion. It does not replace proper training and research. Skinny Medic has good videos. I am in no way affiliated with anyone. My opinions are my own based on MY own experience and preferences.

First responder myself, learned long ago to keep a couple of XL Maxi Pads handy. Cheap, sterile, and make a great compress in a single serve sort of package. Learned a keen trick for ahead wound back a few months ago, after knocking a bit of hide off the top of my head in the weld shop one night, use the sticky to keep one under a cap and cinch up to hold it down for a hands-free compress in a pinch. Got a funny look from the kid working nights with me, but it dern sure beat nothing!

I know this was from a year ago, but I’m the same way. I’m a combat infantryman and learned the value of basic supplies and superior knowledge for Med. I get on any friends and family I have that are tacticool because they don’t take care of themselves enough to be fit enough to even hump all that cool gear they have plus weapon and ammo and I let them know that we are waaaaay more likely to come across a medical emergency in every day life than we are to have the grid go down. So educate yourself on the basics, carry a simple kit and go from there. Eat better, get some activity in. Then worry about being Rambo.

I usually have two EDC setups, one for formal occasions when I'm wearing a suit and another for all other, casual occasions when I'm not wearing a suit. My casual pocket EDC is: Right pocket: 1) Case Medium Stockman SS, 2) Leather wallet with two credit cards, some cash, a couple slips of paper, and my ID. 3) My phone 4) Streamlight Protac 2LX Left pocket: 1) Fox 40 whistle on a 4 ft length of tarred bank line. The bank line is daisy chained down to about 6 inches long. 2) Light My Fire fire steel 3) 7ft 750 piece of paracord that is daisy chained down to about 1 ft long 4) Leatherman Rebar (best bang for buck and lightweight full-size Leatherman, in my opinion) 5) Trunord Wrist Compass 5) My keys (car, house, garage, my parents' house) Back pocket/Cargo pocket: 1) Fisher Bullet Space Pen 2) Field Notes Journal I would say I use most of those things daily if not weekly. The Fox 40 Whistle and LMF fire steel, I don't use often, but when I need them, they are worth their weight in gold. I see them as emergency/signal tools. On formal occasions, I usually ditch the paracord, Leatherman Rebar, and the Field Notes journal. The paper in my wallet will cover suffice for notes. I'm always wearing a watch (Casio G-shock for hard use or a mechanical watch for formal occasions), and a leather Hank's Belt. While I don't consider this pocket carry, I am usually wearing a Stetson Open Road in 10x straw (May through September) or in Royal Deluxe fur felt, depending on weather. For formal occasions, I will opt for a Stetson panama hat (again May through September) or a Pinnacle in beaver fur. These are for blocking sun, keeping head cool/warm, and very light rain cover. When hot, you can use the hats as a makeshift fan. I usually am wearing an ESEE 3 or 4 on my belt. (I have been thinking about upgrading this to an LT Wright knife, but I'm waiting for the right model to show up.) I also am usually carrying a Hill People Gear Medium Belt Pack with all sorts of goodies, but that's for another day.

Anytime I leave my property I take my purse which also adds ID, cash, small mirror, another knife, portable power bank, ferro rod, 2 electrolyte drink mixes, and one day's meds.

I always carry a fixed blade belt knife, Swiss army pocket knife, nail clippers in the watch pocket, Bic lighter, chap stick, flashlight on my belt, multitool, bandana, wallet, speedy sharp, neck knife, phone and keys with a ferro rod on them. The speedy sharp can sharpen any of the knives and strike the ferro rod. The chap stick can be used to aid fire starting. I also always wear a Paracord bracelet as well as a key fob made with it. 😎😂

Dan, have you heard of the 'Rule of Threes'? We use it to teach survival priorities and pocket item contents to our Scouts. We have the official BSA 'Ten Essentials', but use the rule to modify the list. So here's our EDC components: Swiss Army knife or multitool, 2 or 3 bandanas, metal cup , Storm whistle, signal mirror, tinder bundle in a zip loc bag and ferocerium rod, 2 orange barrel liner bags, zip loc bag with hard candies or GORP, headlamp, small personal first aid kit with prescription drugs. We have the Scouts bring these items to every meeting and campout, so it becomes a habit for life. Our Scouts love your two video series. Thanks for all you do.

Three items in my pocket at all times are one of my two Swiss Army Knives, a 50 lumen flashlight and a Bic lighter. Belt knives are either of my new ones. Mora Garberg or Buck 110 LT. I'll be carrying my Pathfinder diy knife next hiking trip to test it out. In my gearslinger pack is the Bacho Laplander saw, multiple cordages, fire kit, 1st Aid kit, sewing & fishing kit, space blanket and cheap poncho in a bag with a candle, compass,headlamp and another flashlight with extra batteries. In the Fall and Winter I pack a UST Space Blanket with cordage and stakes. It's set up the way you demonstrated in a video for quick set up. All cordage is already tied to the blanket/tarp. After one of your recent vids, I'll be adding extra socks. Almost forgot, I have the Pathfinder water bottle and cup in the water bottle pocket.

But I'm under the impression that when people asked you what your everyday carry was, that they were referring to a firearm. I guess I could be wrong about that. Specifically to this video, I wished you spoke a little detail about WHY you have each item in your EDC and contrast it with what another woodsman (or woodswoman) might carry. For example why wouldn't you always carry a first aid kit? Such a fun and dynamic lifestyle. Thanks for sharing.

Ibuprofen and/or naproxen. In the event of injury, pain and inflammation can slow you down and limit mobility. Also, inflammation not only limits mobility, but it also can risk making the injury more severe when hiking through rough terrain. It may seem irrelevant, but one time I got injured and naproxen's anti-inflammatory properties restored alot of my range of motion. It was almost as if I wasn't injured. But you still have to be careful when you get relief, because the relief can be deceptive by causing you hike about as if you're not injured and increases the risk of making it worse. I do have to say, however, that it should be researched as to whether or not any of those drugs create changes in body temperature or minimize nutrition's benefits or absorption, impact hydration, etc. I read something about ibuprofen having a negative impact on the bones. If it weakens the body is also something to be considered.

I don't understand why people keep a cell phone in a rear pocket.

I can understand it somehow with people with pants that are at least a bit loose. But when I see XXXL girl in pants one or two sizes too small sticking her phone into the rear pocket ... I feel sorry for the poor device. :-D

What's more ridiculous, putting a phone in back pocket or the phone holster?

Back pocket is better than a front pocket; and a radiating your testicles or ovaries. If you sit on your phone and break; it it is your own fault, not the pocket! Furthermore other than the radiation Hazard to the genitalia, a man be maneuvering through uneven Terrain, inadvertently causing Guillotineesge action upon cock and balls.. lastly the reason for quick access to the digital device is for GPS Waypoint setting and the tracking.

Did you replace the cork on that water canteen/flask? I would love a quick video on it if you don't have one already. Love the simplicity of the kit though, i'll be adding a needle to my haversack like you have in yours now

I mostly travel the Selway so I need cold weather stuff even in the dead of summer. The trails can be very dangerous so I need to always have a tarp shelter and 4 of those $2 reflective mylar "blankets" In case I have to hunker down and wait for help. 3 days of emergency calories. my Billy. That pack weighs in at 20lbs so is not even noticebale to carry. 6 ways to start a fire small hatchet and a 9 inch folding saw. I leve a section of a topo where Intend to go and a return date on the dash of my car. Most important gear is a pint of Pendeltons in case of snake bite ya know? Oh and ebcause griz and lion my med kit has ClotStop and 4 Cipro capsules. I bear's mouth is FILTHY. The bacteria will kill you faster than the actual wound. I usually also carry a book of some kind.
