The reason Coline didn't cry in the stand was because she learned to dissociate. It is one of the most common trauma responses. It shows you how complex the brain is in response to trauma and how adaptive the brain can be.

As a survivor of Stockholm Syndrome, I am so appreciative of how compassionately you described it. My captor killed himself the week the investigation into him started, so thankfully I never had to face him in court. It’s been several months since I was freed and I still have nightmares about the two years I spent with him nearly every night. The healing process is so complex and difficult. Thank you for sharing victims’ stories without shaming them for what they were put through.

I once read about a science experiment with flies in a jar. Initially when placed in the jar, the flies tried tirelessly to escape. As time passed, their attempts became increasingly feeble. Eventually, the scientists removed the lid: none of the flies made any attempt to escape. While we are not flies- the brain is everything, and it is incredibly complicated. Never judge a trauma response

The reason a victim will talk about an experience with no emotions is bc it too is a trauma response and to get the information out of their mouths they have to literally dissociate from the feelings. I do this with my childhood trauma. But believe me I can be a mess about it when I am alone...

This really hit me. I completely agree. I was abused as a child, and when I talk about it today, my normal reaction is to smile or laugh while I am talking about it. It’s weird. But it gives me the ability to address the issue without feeling too uncomfortable. On another note, thanks Bailey you are amaze. Also, we don’t know what went on with Janice. She seems like a thoroughly conflicted person. All in all, I am glad Colleen is safe. Janice is safe. And a monster is behind bars. And I hope it stays that way. I'm a dude who recently found this channel and I just like to say that I've seen other channels that do the makeup and story time bit and I couldn't care less about the makeup itself. I do however find the implications of it fascinating. By her applying makeup it acts as a way to pace the story and more importantly it makes it feel like a friend telling you a story and not a KZbinr reading a script. Bailey seems to be mostly just telling a story adlib from notes and not a script per say. Most importantly she actually starts with a clean face which makes her feel down to earth, honest and less intimidating. Everyone else I've seen do this type of video starts with a completely covered face that looks "natural" and then they apply another look over that. I've always hated that because it feels fake . I see why Bailey is considered the Queen of the genre

I’ve learned there are so many things to take into account when it comes to people’s actions. Let’s just say she thought about not doing what he said, but we don’t know what her life was like before that and could have a huge impact on her judgement. Also, another big thing people seem to overlook, we are in a totally different time. People were much more naive (sorry but..) and weren’t as educated on the world so they were quicker to trust things we think are ridiculous like “the company”. He could’ve just warned her, instead of trying to scare her. Seems unnecessary. The truth is that men are not safe hitchhiking either. I know there is this myth of the fragile female, and the infallible man, but men are not bulletproof or knife proof. I’m a woman who hitchhiked all over Ireland… (Not all over the US). I was aware there was a risk. And, although I wouldn’t recommend it to a daughter, I’m glad I took it. I don’t wanna live in fear because I’m female. I’ve fought my way out of situations before. We don’t have the same upper-body strength as many men, but a lot of our extreme weakness is psychological. We are told we are weak and we believe it. We don’t learn how to defend ourselves.

Never mind the 70s. I was born in 86. Got my license in 2002 and I remember my friends and I used to offer rides to strangers 😅 that being said we lived in a town of 3000 including the reserve so it was always probably a friend of a friend or our grandmothers' best friends grandson/daughter etc. Still seems sketchy to me looking back on it though.

As a parent, I can't understand how the family didn't notice she was malnourished and abused. Or let her leave again. I'd be trailing their car and staking out the house. No way my daughter would disappear with a guy, and I not know where she is. After hearing nothing for 2 years then she shows up with her boyfriend, who doesn't stay, and then disappears again. NOPE! I feel like Janice was a victim , but she got jealous that she wasn't getting all of the attention anymore.

They were trying to keep a line of connection open since they had no clue what exactly was going on… also she was an adult what they going to do force her to stay? She was scared $hitless it would have made the situation 100x worser for Colleen. The family did hood by not causing a panos it caused Cameron to let his guard down eventually.

I was a kid of the 80’s & in the 90’s early 2000 everyone was still hitching a lift…… especially as buses were not as frequent & everything is costly @ the time when there’s a huge recession going on. My own dad even went abroad for work as there was nothing in the country. 😮 different times…..

I think regarding Janice, it's possible for a person to be 2 things at once, i.e. a victim and a perpetrator. She did terrible things, and also had terrible things done to her. One shouldn't cancel out the other though.
