Today is the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time; in the Gospel, we will hear Simon Peter’s declaration about Jesus’ identity: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
The Lord’s response highlights the realsource of Simon Peter´s insight: “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.” After this necessary reminder, Jesus gives Simon a new identity: “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.”
Brothers and sisters, we need to be open to God’s light in order to grow in our
knowledge of Jesus Christ as the Messiah and Son of the living God.
