Rakim the 🐐 .. that " he couldn't follow the leader long enuff so i drug him" was a EPMD diss
@John-ik5vw
@John-ik5vw 5 ай бұрын
Reference to a line in EPMD's "You Got's to Chill" I think or "You're a Customer". Precipitated by EPMD lines "Dig em smacks..." / "Smack me and I'll smack you back", which Rakim saw as a shot to his line in I Ain't No Joke "You could get a smack for this"... There's also the line that apparently was aimed at Kane with "Word to Daddy". There were lines in Kane's classic "Set It Off" and "Ain't No Half Steppin" and "Raw" that Rakim saw as directed at him originally but both spoke and decided it was a misunderstanding; and the songs were reworked and released without any direct references toward each other, but we still got to get a hint of what the battle would have been like between arguably the two greatest lyricists ever at their peak. These shots were not just personal ego by the way, but what these young men, teens and early 20s thought about how men should be and what hip hop should be in substance and content as well as style. The thinking and influences and conditions were far different than today, and the folks creating were still all in the birthplace, NYC (in struggling neighborhoods of largely Caribbean immigrants with a lot of militant / revolutionary ideas circulating for the past few decades- and with that none of the smiling and shuffling shit associated with POC in entertainment) and its surrounding areas of the city with similar demographics.

I love this song, it brings back great memories and the struggles that kids today will never know. Sitting in front of the tape player, pencil and paper trying to write down the lyrics to a song, what did he say? Rewind, again and again to get it.

And also, before Eric B & Rakim & Public Enemy, Del La Soul, Soul 2Soul, Snap etc back in the hip hop explosion towards the end of the 80s , hip hop was all like nursery rhymes & this stuff was GROUNDBREAKING! I am so hyped that I was around in those days and the 90s when music was COMPLETELY original & experimental. We were lucky. I still think there is good music out today, but it's all cut n paste & it all sounds the same. But really really pleased that the younger generation are finding these guys and the music we used to listen to back in the day & digging it. Good music will always remain good music from generation to generation.

By far their best song. Everything jumped into hyperdrive on this album. It was like a time warp into the future. "Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em" (Title track - next album) is about as close as they ever got to the level of this song. It's in a dimension all it's own.
