Why did the Liberals and Nationals ban it in the first place? By the way the cost and timeframe to build Nuclear is just not acceptable. If the Liberals and Nationals had not canceled the first Nuclear reactor back in 1971 (due to cost) Australia would have a viable Nuclear Power generation industry.
@carolb95496 ай бұрын
While the govt is dilly dallying around time is running out to get this country working with a fail safe electricity supply in the future. The cost of electricity will be prohibitive for many Australians to use. Manufacturing and our industry will never be able to compete with other countries. Our country will be much poorer.

Economics 101. You get 2 ways to do exactly the same thing. One way is twice as expensive. Which do you choose? Do you choose the least cost method of providing reliable electricity, or do you choose nuclear instead?
@mikehitch77996 ай бұрын
Yep not any evidence nuclear is cheaper.
@some_doofus3 ай бұрын
Your assertion that renewables are a comparable method of producing reliable electricity is the problem here. Nuclear produces reliable electricity, renewables only add further variability to the grid. To make renewables reliable requires massive overbuild of generation, transmission and storage infrastructure that usually isn’t considered in comparisons. Nuclear and renewables do not do the exact same thing but people think they do, and that’s the basis of the problem
@saumyacow44353 ай бұрын
@@some_doofus On the contrary. Once you've established a ewnewable based power system, along with all the storage and transmission needed, is still by a long margin cheaper than nuclear. Its as simple as that.

Why hasn't the free market perused nuclear energy? Why did we privatize most of Australia's energy production if it takes state level investment to expand the grid?
@emveeess8396 ай бұрын
Senator, perhaps leave this to those who understand the cost and complexity of developing nuclear energy. Go and read the copious reports that clearly conclude that nuclear is not economically viable in Australia. We don’t have the skills or technology to deliver SAFE plants in a reasonable timeframe. It’s a fantasy
@emveeess8396 ай бұрын
Furthermore consider even that small reactors by say reputable suppliers such ad Westinghouse are $B investments. The $/MW is not remotely close to the $/MW provided by other renewables. Reason costs have gone up is due to no investment in low cost generators due to 10 years of no energy policy security around renewables and uneconomic coal generation being shut down

@andrewjoy70446 ай бұрын
Last year over 70% of total electricity demand was met by Renewables. Obviously we are still transitioning from fossil fuels to Renewables and obviously there are times when we rely on Victorian brown coal. However the time is fast approaching when SA will be over 100% sufficient in Renewables. I feel this is remarkable since our transition started only 20 years ago and the coal power station in Port Augusta closed in 2016. South Australia is looking to be an Energy Hub with the Renewables coming on line and is attracting large amounts of investment in industry and agriculture as a result. The Iron Triangle is leading they way on this.

Because it's stupidly expensive. I've worked on energy projects all around the world (Antarctica is the only continent I haven't worked on) over the last 13 years, Hinkley C doing the water intakes, many, many offshore wind farms, Basslink here in Australia, and I worked in offshore oil and gas for 12 years before I worked on power generation projects. It's a really dumb idea and you should know that, I'd just like to know who the people are who are telling you to push this junk and what they have to gain from it, because there is no rational reason to have nuclear in this country.

In the meantime the share of renewables is expanding, rapidly. In the meantime, the number of batteries (domestic and at scale) is growing rapidly. Just a thought on the locations of countries that have significant nuclear powered electricity generation. All of western and central Europe, all of Russia, Northern Japan, all of Canada and the USA north of Chicago are further from the equator than southern Tasmania. Furthermore there is no moderating ocean between the Arctic and any of these countries. They all have long, dark, VERY cold winters. Solar isn’t an option. These government types have no idea what is involved with building, maintaining and dealing with the waste of the nuclear industry. Keep employment in those industries, STOP fear mongering and get on with the job of helping Australians that are struggling with cost of living.

There is no such thing as a clean coal or gas fired power station. Health officials estimate that in 2020 there were about 800 premature deaths, 850 low birth weight in newborns and 14 000 asthma attacks in children and youn adults aged between 5 - 19. You must have your head up your arse if you think building COAL and GAS power stations is the answer. There is also the huge problem with radio-active waste generated by burning coal that nobody seems to mention.
