I feel that for the team's final it was a good strategy to leave the most difficult puzzle to the end, since you'd most likely not be able to finish, and starting with the easiest you'd get higher piece count. the preliminary round was just for fun and didn't affect the finals. so if I was competing I would have purposefully done that leisurely to not waste energy on it and run out of mental and physical stamina. it isn't in the spirit of competing, but you could almost just ignore it and not really do it to make sure you're really fresh for the finals.

Ι was wondering if there is a rule about nationality in the pairs and teams competition until I saw that mixed team at the end. I guess the language barrier and the friendships inside the community were the leading factors for most people teaming up with their fellow compatriots. Anyway, wonderful video as always! ☺️

Yes, if you have people from multiple countries, you just have to pick one for your team to officially represent. And most teams practice together ahead of time!

I wondered as well because of these two mysterious members of the French team with no stats from the other rounds (that intrigue me) and Spanish sounding names (of course, they could have dual nationalities) I checked and I think they both participated, separately, in the pairs qualifiers, Juan Antonio Ávarez-Ossorio reached 73rd place (401 pieces) in qualifying round B with Antonia Mª García de Soria Aguirre, and José María Sánchez del Monte finished 78th (1:25:13) in qualifying round A with Sonia López Adrinal. I didn't find them in the individual rounds, so I guess they would only have one rank out of the 4 possible on Karen's layout (they didn't make it to the pairs finals), but they didn't came just for the team event. Now I wonder if they chose not to compete individually or if there was a selection to limit the number of contestants (I haven't watched the first video yet, maybe Karen mentioned it there, it's my next stop on KZbin) I think it is cool to see pairs and teams from different countries, or even just mix and matching of pairs for teams (even if it does make more work for Karen with the graphs). It might not be the most "efficient" way because of the possible language barrier, as you say, and the fact that it is harder to train together, but the image of people teaming up together anyways, united by their love of puzzles is really cool ! I wish there was a way to showcase that in the little name card for future editions, but I understand that it is easier to have a single nationality for each individual/pair/group because of the qualification rules, and also because of the lack of place on the name card.

This was really cool! A small tip from a statistician. About the graphs of the pairs. Many of them showed huge amount of information with only a little explanation. I didn't know what I was looking at before you removed them from the screen again. I didn't understand what I was looking at. A great counter example was the final one, where you showed that only two teams existed of people in the top 20 of the singles. You highlighted those 4 people and explained what that small piece of data said. It was very clear. Do stuff like that more! EDIT: Graphs after the teams qualifier were much clearer. Less data per chart AND clearly explained what we were looking at

In general on KZbin, since people have access to pause buttons, leaving charts up for less time is more appropriate than on TV or in a presentation: people can look for as long as they want. (And many do pause and look!)

It occurs to me that the teams who chose to do the difficult/fun puzzles in the team competition preliminary, could have done so since they were guaranteed to compete in the finals. The timing didn't really matter, so practicing on harder puzzles makes an amount of sense. Especially if you expect the final team competetion to be more difficult than the preliminary.

Yeah, seems surprising they set the limit even lower given the result from the previous one. 8h for 4 puzzles is an average of 2h per puzzle and that one also had half of them being 1k and half 1.5k. I guess you do get slower after 8h but given that less than 20 teams made it last time, it seems crazy to lower the limit even more. It's not like there's any advantage to having a significant amount not finish. In fact, it's way fairer if everybody finishes and you compare times instead of completed pieces.

@@staciecarrel4492 I didn't say they should let everybody finish. I just said it would be the fairest method. But ofc for the lower places that doesn't really matter. But they should at least aim to let as many people as possible in a reasonable time frame, minimum at least all the top 20 or so finish. Giving them only 3h almost looks like they intentionally made the time limit low so that most people won't finish. Reminds me of some professors that intentionally make the time limit for exams way too low so that nobody can finish it so that even the fastest people can be ordered. Even that is arguably stupid but in this case it clearly makes no sense. Though I assume they probably just missjudged the time but it seems rather obvious that 3 is too short. I immediately thought it sounded short once I heard the time.

I loved all your colour-coded charts, thank you for all the work you put into this! I knit to these videos and you give great enthusiastic commentary so it's usually in the background while I knit, but I actually stopped knitting to see all the details and I love seeing all the strategies that go into it

A guide to the Spanish teams' names and how they're translated: - Superpiezas -> Super-Pieces - Cuatro piezas -> Four Pieces - Rompepiezas -> The Piece Breakers (Luv this one btw) - Supernenas -> It's the Spanish translation of the Powerpuff Girls, don't know if that's why they chose It! Anyway It literally translates to 'Supergirls' or 'Superchicks' - El grup -> I think (not sure) this is actually Catalan, one of the several regional co-official languages in Spain. It means 'The group'. From last years' - La mesa de Al Lado -> The table next door. This is a reference to the movie 'The girl Next door' - Nos falta una -> We're missing a piece! (I find this one funny) - Piezas rotas -> Broken pieces - Los despiezadores -> the piece rippers (It's Probably a reference to Jack the ripper which in Spain is known as 'Jack el destripador'. There's actually a song from a famous group which mentions him. Search for Estopa - Mi primera Cana) Fun fact, sometimes we use 'pieza' to describe a person who is one of a kind, one who stands out, or who has a lot of charisma. From Instagram (cronicaspuzzleras) -> It means 'Puzzler chronicles' P.d.: I think the way Karen says Superpiezas is super cute!

33:32 (and also later again) Aww the way you pronounced Eckteile was so funny. The pronunciation is hard to explain, but basically there is no spoken "e" in the first part of the word "Teile", since the "ei" together is pronounced differently. It's more like you would pronounce "I". It means corner pieces in German though :D This video was so fun to watch, thank you so much for all the work, data and visual graphics you put into this

I think you did an incredible job of publicizing and helping this event blow up even more, and I wouldn't be surprised if it has double the amount of participants next year. Hopefully the event continues to grow and provides a bigger platform of enjoyment and competition for the puzzling community. Maybe it will follow the same trajectory of the chess blow-up in the pandemic (though that was also helped by Netflix series and the Twitch streamers). I'm glad you're expanding your role from a solo puzzler to an ambassador.

Chess and speedpuzzling are similar in many concepts. I hope also that the chess-boom helps to pave up our way. Nevertheless, the FIDE was founded in the 1920s, one century of advantage!

I think the clear trays are probably good for both having the pieces on top of, and looking through the boards at the same time. Personally I don't think that would give that much of an advantage but, it's an interesting route!

These videos (Parts 1 & 2) were an absolute joy to watch, in no small part due to your infectious commentary! I've always loved doing jigsaw puzzles, and had no idea of the competitive component until seeing the movie 'Puzzle' a few weeks ago. I immediately Googled "puzzle competitions in my area", and am delighted to report that I will be taking part in my first in two days! Who knows, we may compete at some point in time. Looking forward to watching more of your coverage in the future.

I’m so glad I found this channel. I love doing puzzles - one of my earliest and fondest memories is doing a puzzle with my mom when I was a very little girl (which we framed and I still have). Nowadays, I do puzzles on my computer. I’m not fast by any means, but I enjoy it deeply.

The amount of work you put into this video is INCREDIBLE! I loved it. I’m so impressed with all the participants too. Such a cool event. I've been excitedly anticipating your Part 2 video recap of the World Jigsaw Puzzle Championships and now it is here ! Karen, thank you ever so much for your hard work to edit this video and for sharing it with us. I watched much of the puzzle championship and was only disappointed because I felt I missed so much because of the language barrier. I would love to see an English translation or English subtitles while the event, itself, is being aired. I loved seeing the contestants from so many countries. They are all incredible puzzlers.
