Been also getting a lot of feedback towards the volume for this video. Definitely my bad! First time making a video like this and I was afraid to raise the volume control past what I use to edit (which is fairly loud when editing, but quiet after rendering) KZbin unfortunately removed anyway to alter volume after uploading, but if they ever put it back y'all know the first thing I'm going to do! In the meantime, when the entire series is completed I will be uploading a full version of the Myst Saga, with all parts, at a uniform HIGHER volume. So look forward to that!

Well produced and narrated. I recently "redisovered" Riven in my shelf. As a child i only watched the grownups clicking through those strange Island setting. Now i played the Game -- and it feels like wandering trough old ruins. I remembered some of the Places (The temple and the gateroom for instance), but not much else. So i was able to experience the whole story as if it was completly new to me. Fantastic Storytelling through environment, atmospheric Soundtrack. Without a doubt one of the best Computer-Games i've ever played.

About the language used to make the books: I was always under the impression that the D'ni used a different writing system for the books than they did for every day writing. The D'ni language we see in the games would thus most likely be a simplified version of the writing system they used for the Art. However... I can't remember where exactly I got this idea from, so I'm not sure. Maybe someone else can confirm?
@cailco1003 жыл бұрын
It's not that they have two different writing systems for written and The art. It's that when they use The art they use a special type of book and ink that allow the Descriptive book to link to an age. It's like using a telephone number to contact someone. My headcanon for why two descriptive books written in the same way but cannot connect to the same age is down to the handwriting as well as the infinite number of age out there. As no matter how careful you write you will never pull or push the pen in the same way as you did the first time. you'd get close but never perfect. On the wiki for D'ni is this link (dni.fandom.com/wiki/The_Skill) it gives a pretty good explanation of the skill. The reason making changes to an already connect age is bad is because you are pulling and ripping or in some cases quite literally twisting something that wasn't meant to be apart of the age into it. it's also why Atrus and Catherin where so careful with any changes they made
@Dachusblot3 жыл бұрын
@@cailco100 I'm pretty sure they used a special writing system in addition to the special paper and ink? I swear that's actually confirmed somewhere in the series, but I can't for the life of me remember where. Maybe one of the novels? About never being able to duplicate a Descriptive Book: I actually think that can be explained entirely by the infinite multiverse theory, and the limitations of writing. Imagine you wrote a Descriptive Book of an age that was super detailed, and then you somehow managed to duplicate that book perfectly, even down to the exact angles and pressure of the pen strokes. Even then it wouldn't take you to the same age, because there's no way you can possibly account for every possible detail of the age in your description. If you tried to write a duplicate of Riven, for instance, you couldn't account for the exact placement of every single blade of grass, or every single insect, or every single person, etc. There will always be some gaps in your description no matter what. So a perfect duplicate of Riven's descriptive book would likely link you to a world that was really similar to Riven, but still not the same world.
@cailco1003 жыл бұрын
@@Dachusblot I've never managed to get any of the novels even though I really want to. I know in Myst 4 you can see Atrus teaching Yeesha how to write an age and you can see the writing in the book and it looks to be the same as their written langauge. You'd have to look through Dilandau3000 playlist of Myst 4 to see the book. I know he looks at it. The not being able to link the same descriptive book could be a mixture of the two. as if you do the latter and make a perfect description of the age. well, 1 that book is going to be effing massive and 2 I think your hand might fall off. That or it could be down to the paper and the ink used as you'll never get the same ink or paper used the first time round even if you used anything leftover as it would have aged more or collected something the first lot didn't have. Even still I just love the lore of the D'ni and it sucks that uru online is only sort of being maintained. Cannot wait for their new game firmament to come out
@Dachusblot3 жыл бұрын
@@cailco100 The novels are great! Definitely read them if you get a chance. Book of Atrus is the best one. Book of Ti'ana has some issues with the writing and pacing in my opinion, but the plot is good and it has some amazing lore stuff too. Book of D'ni is kind of a mess, tbh, but still worth reading if you're a Myst fan. ☺

I wanted to watch this, but the volume issue is still here 15 months later. It would be fairly trivial to re-render, especially since your pinned comment suggests you intended to put the entire series forward as a single video. As it stands, passing because I would have to jack my volume so ridiculously high that any alert notification sounds on my computer would not only deafen me, but also probably people in the neighboring states.

So about the info on Linking/Descrptive books can't link with you when linking to another Age which I have seen throughout the series except for Relto. I'm intrigued to find out how Yeesha changed this when creating Relto.
@crimocklyte49644 жыл бұрын
Relto is....weird It will be brought up in regards to Yeesha's abilities, but there was unfortunately a bit of retconning with regards to those linking books and what the player could do
@raingram4 жыл бұрын
Yeesha learned from basically every different method of The Art. The Bahro, Master D'ni Writers, Her Father, Her Mother, Trial-and-Error. Each version of The Art had its own strengths and weaknesses, but ultimately they were the same thing. The Bahro could link-at-will and make subtle changes to an age (like making it rain, or heating it up). Atrus could make changes to an already-written descriptive book, and write artificial structures. Katran could write fantastical worlds that even amazed Atrus. The Writers of D'ni had centuries to millennia of experience with The Art and knew how to write the most complex and stable worlds. It stands to reason that with all this experience at her disposal she'd try to combine all this understanding and make discoveries of her own. (I'd love to see her journals from when she's figuring all this out!) Relto Pages seem to be a combination of something like the Bahro glyphs we see with Myst V's slates, her knowledge of book-making and the ink, and the ability to change an age like the bahro and Atrus could. The Relto Book's ability to link inside it's own age probably stems from learning to link-at-will from the bahro (her tatoo and the hand markings on the Bahro could be something to do with this, and the relto book has her mark in it.) I've never seen anything she's done as particularly magical or unexplained, she's simply unburdened by D'ni culture and free to learn as much as possible for herself.

At 9:38, a nice way of putting that rule I've heard is "Whatever goes with you when you take a step, will also go with you when you link." Also, isn't it pronounced "D-nee"? (You could also say "dunny", but that means toilet in Australia) You also tend to put a lot of stress on the final syllable of D'ni words. I don't know if that's how they're actually said, but it might be more open to newcomers if the stress was based on English words.
@TNJX4 жыл бұрын
The final syllable sress is correct for most of those. Anyway English speakers from England dont tend to stress the first syllable, or there is equal stress on each.
@raingram4 жыл бұрын
@@TNJX OK, I'm just saying that it sounds.. off. The stress may be correct but it's off putting.

As much as I like the mechanics of the Descriptive and Linking books, what didn't make sense is how altering a descriptive book could adjust an Age, when it should switch to an alternative Age. If the Descriptive Book "creates" an Age, the alterations effecting said Age would make sense.

@gregorygherkins18843 жыл бұрын
I prefer pronouncing D'ni as "de-ny" rather than "dunny" as that is Australian slang for a toilet. The former sounds classier than something you poop into. "The dunny was originally any outside toilet. In cities and towns the pan-type was emptied by the dunny man , who came round regularly with his dunny cart . Dunny can now be used for any toilet. The word comes from British dialect dunnekin meaning an 'earth closet, (outside) privy' from dung + ken 'house'. First recorded in the 1930s but dunnekin is attested in Australian sources from the 1840s." slll.cass.anu.edu.au/centres/andc/meanings-origins/d
