MAJOR SPOILERS, CAREFUL. Nah he died due to toxic air, its legit a barren wasteland out there, the catch was, the suits they give, don't have a true filtration system in them and are meant to fail. The display of it being beautiful is meant to coax the person to clean the camera, under a false pretense of they will be fine, meanwhile, the toxic air (nanites) is already going to work on their lungs. This causes them to die in front of the camera, where the real view of the outside is for the inhabitants. This is meant as a psychological tactic to show the people on the inside the dangers of outside and serve as a reminder of what cleaning will do to you. IF the display showed a barren wasteland to the cleaner, nobody would clean the camera and likely panic and die outside the cameras view. Also, the glitched display in the cafeteria is part of a program that is running on, and this is heavy spoilers, multiple other silos. There is legit an AI that is running experiments on these silos and thats the knowledge that the mayor has and why its so important that they comply and show they are docile. They don't want one of two things happening, the AI killing the inhabitants, or for another uprising to occur, which the AI will allow, and cause that door to be breached killing everybody with the toxic air. This has already happened once, and a full silo was killed, except 1 person, we will likely meet this person next season, because believe me, that sheriff is going outside. Luckily, she is like the first person to survive it because she realizes the suits are rigged and they fix it long enough for her to find an entrance to another silo. This is where the story really kicks off and you learn about the other silos, the AI, the war, fucking NANO BOTS, I am not even joking the story is wild. But basically, an AI is running the fucking hunger games on these silos for shits and giggles and is sadistic as fuck.

@@rileyparsley4136 it’s honestly been a while since I read the books and I need to re-read them but I’m not sure it ever fully goes into detail on how the catastrophe happened or where the AI came from it kind of leads you to make assumptions about how humans probably made an AI and at one point we were super technologically advanced, something went down that resulted in us basically going extinct via nanobots and bombing our own soil with nukes. At some point either the AI existed and was the start of the war or came into power afterwards and here we are. And yes correct it’s not toxic in the sense of chemicals but nano bots.

The summary of the books on wikipedia says, the silos are surrounded by artificial toxins, behind that, the world has recovered. Now i assume, the illusion mechanism, which we've briefly noticed during the blackout episode, serves the command-staff in silo 1 to control when and which silos people are let out. The moviemakers might deviate from the books, ofc, but i think my theory is viable, for now.

@@andrewwiles2409 how does that make sense? If the illusion mechanism is for the staff, does that mean they are supposed to be fooled aswell into believing they can leave the silo? Why are they tampering with the suits then? It must be, because they know the illusion is just that. And even if they are not fooled by the fake display, they would not feel the need to sabotage the suit, since the cleaners are gonna die soon anyways in the post nuclear world. Both options make little sense.

But why tamper with the suit then and not just let staff go out and clean the camera with a proper suit and get back in? After all they have pretty secure airlocks and I doubt they are lacking the technology to "wash off" radiation if needed.

I don't think that the visors are manipulated, but simply a huge hologram is projected onto the outside world, because in the scene in which the power goes out, the hologram can be seen briefly on the monitor in the canteen.
