Denver sucks considering it was started from a blank slate. the concourse tram (the only way to get to B and C, is sometimes as crowded as a Tokyo subway. The remote parking and car rental areas are all accessed via rickety bus rides (compare the rail connection in ATL to the car rental area).

Denver International AirPort just continues to grow and get bigger and busier. In 2023 over 77 million people flew through DIA. It’s got 5 runways at 12,000 feet long and 1 at 16,000 feet. They also have room for 6 more runways. The place is huge.

Atlanta is rebuilding its Concourse D without closing it, or even impacting flights. To do this, they're building new concourse sections off the side of the airport, and trucking them across the tarmac during overnight hours to place against the existing structure. The end result will make the concourse 1/3rd wider, matching the dimensions of the other five concourses.

The inside scoop at ORD: The city planners and designers of the modernization program failed miserably. The two busiest runways, 10L/28R and 9R/27L were never built with an end around taxiway on the each end. Therefore, due to incompetence in taxi route planning by the FAA, arriving aircraft on each side of the airport are constantly forced into a single line that puts them into the face of all departing aircraft. This is the reason for the sometimes incredibly long taxi times to get to the gates after landing. Unfortunately the new terminals will NEVER solve this problem. Only new concrete and taxi procedures can improve the overall quality of service at this once great airport.
@Cdr_Mansfield_Cumming4 ай бұрын
They should have built that new Airport just to the South East of Coventry in Long Lawford. The plans were for 8 runways with expansion to 12 in future years. Fully connected to High speed rail and the M1, M6, M40, M45, M42 within a few miles. It would have saved all the problems extending Heathrow, Gatwick, Standstead and City Airport in London. Labour then Cameron’s government killed it. I suppose because it wasn’t in the South East enough to do it.

LAX is beginning to look like a completely different airport. The entire airport will finally have a unifying architectural design aesthetic. The new aesthetic is an homage to Mid Century Modern. Even the APM train cars and stations will have a similar aesthetic. BTW, the train cars are actually white, not blue, as shown in this rendering.

HK current airport should still have been on the south side of Lantau islands, which means it could've used way less land reclamation and use the Soko islands (a bunch of useless rocks) as an anchor for expansion as needed. Although that was my thought prior to knowing they're going to do the connections between HK-Zhuhai-Macau bridge and the other connection through Tuen Mun up to Shenzhen Bay border crossing, which help connect HKIA to an extra over 20 million people of the Greater Bay Area, as well as shared loads and diversions between airports at Macau and Shenzhen Bao'an.
@pineapplesareyummy63523 ай бұрын
I think the current HK airport is already very good. There was an island there called Chek Lap Kok. They flattened it to an island about 4x the size. Putting an airport on the south side of Lantau island would be worse. It is further away from the rest of the city, and on the exposed side facing South China Sea where it'd be more vulnerable to typhoons. The HK airport in its current position allows good connections to places people want to go.

Denver International: frankly after 20 years people are pretty damn sure there's a very important strategic retreat base/bunker complex underneath DIA.... one of the reasons such a HUGE complex of land was obtained was to make sure no one else could build or dig anywhere near the complex underneath. While it certainly isn't on THAT scale, and isn't in a completely new unused location, Salt Lake International has done a truly amazing project. one I would love to see this gentleman mention at some point: they are posed to finish within a year or two the final phase of a project that was originally envisioned to end somewhere between 2027 and 2030. The pandemic allowed for a massive shift in planning, due to the original airport being effectively shut down and/or reduced drastically for so long. The old airport was completely replaced, with a major size upgrade, BEING BUILT ALONGSIDE THE EXISTING AIRPORT at the same time.. But thanks to that pandemic change, they were able to go ahead and completely demolish the 1960 airport all at once. There are precious few airports that have done anything of this sort, and certainly not at this scale.

@@米空軍パイロット This. Eastern Adams County mostly consisted of empty prairie. Also, the airport replaced by DIA -- Stapleton International -- got surrounded by development to the extent that it couldn't expand, and the gripes about noise just never ended. So, the *new* airport has vast stretches of empty fields that will *never* be zoned for residential development -- only mixed industry and commercial uses. Additionally, the airport has enough open land in immediate proximity that it could double the number of existing runways anytime the city chooses. The City and County of Denver took the lessons of Stapleton seriously.
