At this point there isn't anything you can do to fix this yourself by watching him or feeding him different food. The only thing that can help is a dental trimming. Once the teeth are that long they can not grind them properly, and they will continue to grow until they either can't eat anymore and starve to death, or until they grow up and around and puncture through the nasal cavity, cause infection, an inability to breath, and a painful death. Please, please, I urge you to call a wildlife rehabilitation, and get him live trapped so they can evaluate him and decide what will work best for him. If it's just an issue of him not using them correctly to start, or a realignment of the jaw (if the jaw were injured and repairable) then they can just be trimmed and he will be good to go back to your property once well. However, if he truly has an underbite with the front incisors unable to align for proper grinding, then he has limited options; He could have someone licenced take him in as an educational ambassador for his species, and they could either trim his teeth every few months for the rest of his life, or they could have the front incisors pulled and feed him a special diet the rest of his life. (Which sounds mean, but they still have back teeth for chewing, and having one surgery is much less stressful than repeated teeth trimmings on a wild animal) Though even if no one can take him on because he's too stressed in captivity or there isn't anyone willing/able to do so, then at least a humane euthanasia would be a blessing in comparison to the suffering he will endure if he isn't caught and taken in to be helped. I have been lucky enough to have shared my life with groundhogs as both my own educational ambassadors, and in wildlife rehabilitation for the past 12 years. They are my passion and I have done everything I can to learn about how to make their lives happy, healthy, and full. I'm giving you the advice I have learned about while working with my own and helping others do the same. I only hope you can read and understand I'm commenting because I love them so much that I can't imagine not offering what help I can ❤

@@chuckland2009 Good eye! Those tops are much worse than the bottoms are. I hadn't even seen how bad they were at normal speed. With them already curling back and upward this poor little one does not have much time left before the uppers pierce through the roof of the mouth and start growing up towards his sinus cavity or brain. I sincerely hope that they can catch him asap 💔

Gardener Jeff, from the looks of that underbite, you may have to get a wildlife rehabber to step in and cut those incisors down to an appropriate size. I know this can also be a problem for squirrels and a few have starved to death as a result. Keep an eye out is all I'm saying.

In the meantime Petsmart and Petco have wooden chews for rodents that smell like veggies for guinea pigs,rabbits and hamsters. Catching and sedating Chunk is going to be a job.

The Dental Hygienist in me could never get passed the underbite/malocclusion😄 When it comes to food - if there’s a will, there is a way ! We all inherit the good and the bad genes from our parents! That's a malocclusion. Its not good for his teeth to be that long . It could become a serious problem for him if his teeth continue to grow

…yes that is true… well spotted!!! The condition can be treated if Chunk is caught - a vet can ‘trim’ the teeth… sounds a drastic measure but could save a life if they continue to grow outwards.

He/she is very cute, but I think it will have to be live trapped & raised in captivity if its going to stand a chance of survival. Those teeth will have to be routinely trimmed. I would do that ASAP because they're already preventing it from eating properly.

I'm concerned about those top teeth. Not sure how they will wear in that position as it appears the front of the teeth is being used more than the edge. If that is the case the teeth will continue to grow which could be quite dangerous for Baby Snacks. :(

It is worrisome as their teeth grow 1/16 of an inch each day. If this little one has to be rescued they will sedate and trim his teeth a s assess if the bottom teeth will grow normally. It’s a bit heart-wrenching to see him struggle so much. He needs to weigh at least 7 lbs to make it through hibernation.

I was noticing Baby Snacks unusual tooth arrangement before, but it sure looks like at least for now he has the eating thing down pat, he has learned quickly how to bite and chew given his situation .. Ohmigosh - that's not an underbite; the poor baby doesn't seem to have any upper incisors at all! No wonder food keeps falling out of his mouth, got no teeth on top to hold it in. Now I'm going to worry about him all the time.

He has upper incisors. They aren’t easy to see because of the underbite. I’m no woodchuck expert, but it seems like his lower ones are sticking out a bit more than they should. Maybe the little one will start to chew on some bark. That would help. But I’m with you. Poor baby is having a very hard time chewing, and he will have to work extra hard to eat enough to have fat built up for hibernation.

What an adorable lip smacking baby groundhog. 😁 This is the only time lip smacking is acceptable to me... especially since the baby's teeth may not be growing in right and I agree with several other posters who've made the same observations. I'm sure Gardener Jeff is keeping a close eye on the lil one and consulting with wildlife rehabbers or wildlife vets for advice.
