Another factor to consider in the difference between the likes of the Netherlands and the U.S. other than population size is investment in sports. I don't know if it is a legacy of the cold war with the Soviet Union but American supremacy in global sport is backed by the dollar. The Netherlands (like many other European states) is more interested in investing in social projects such as healthcare and transport. I am not intending to detract from the massive talent of Sydney and others but the fact that the likes of Femke Bol can compete at all says a lot for her character as much as her ability.

@scottellis5324 Very true. I think that people outside of the US think that American athletes get a lot of financial backing. They don't understand that track and field athletes of Bol's caliber are superstars in Europe like NBA players in America. Plus I suspect their form of patriotism means they can't give credit to champions from other nations. In the case of Sydney's fans there's also delusional beliefs about her capabilities, and they will belittle other athletes who are clearly superior in other events, like Marileidy Paulino in the flat 400m or Gabby in the 200m. It's impossible to comment on any of these events right now without being abused by Sydney fans if you don't share their beliefs. I wish they would create their own FB and KZbin pages and go and worship there and give the rest of us a break. I admire Sydney as the best athlete in the 400mh but I've stopped clicking on anything with her name or photo in the header. Even here where we're supposedly discussing Bol as an athlete they turn the subject to their favorite.

The problem for Femke Bol is that she is running in a "vacuum". On the one hand there is McLaughlin who is faster, but never runs. On the other hand there is the remainder of the world-top of 400m hurdlers, with experienced athletes like Cockrell, Clayton, Russell, Little and a few relative newcomers like Shian Salmon and Jasmine Jones. None of these others come even close to Bol however. They all have PB's that are a second or more slower, and are also significantly slower on the 200m and 400m flat. The stats of the head to head race counts are undeniable: Bol - Cockrell: 8 - 1, Bol - Clayton: 18 - 0, Bol - Little: 16 - 0. etc. The result of this + the fact that McLaughlin hardly ever runs, is that Bol wins 98% of her races with relative ease, normally with 10 to 15 meter lead and not having to go to the bottom of the tank so to say. However, this is actually detrimental to the development of Femke Bol, because in this way she never builds up the experience of running against a real competitor. And the result of that we have seen in the Olympic games where Bol completely mismanaged her race, and ended up running far slower than her normal level while everybody else was running PB's...

If Bol runs less and believes in herself, she can beat McLaughlin-Verone. She ran her chance of beating her out of her out of her legs in the Olympic 400H by that incredible finish in the mixed relay. She was 1.5s down on the time she did 3 weeks earlier. McLaughlin-Verone picks her races and doesn't over-compete. Man you tripping. You spinning a lot of data to call her the "greatest"??? Come on brah. Femke is legit, but not the greatest by any measure. She finished 3rd in two consecutive Olympics. What if Paulino (Dominican Republic) had a relay team? Femke would not run down Paulino. What if Nasar (Bahrain) had a relay team? Femke is not running her down either. You are trying to use the small size of the Netherlands as some type of "extra points" but the best 400m women are from smaller countries and if they had decent 400m runners to form a relay team with, The Netherlands would not medal in any relay. You people love to cherry pick data and arrange it in ways to give impressions that are not true. By your words a casual fan would believe that Bol is much faster than Sydney - which isn't close to being true. Sydney has embarrassingly beaten Bol every time they've lined up against each other. Sydney holds the REAL records (Olympic and World) and 5 or 6 of the Top Fastest Times in the hurdles. You people are sooooo deceptive that it's devil-like 👿. I never expected Bol to win the 400mh, but when she came in third and cried like that and ran to her parents my heart really went out to her. She just seems like a genuine person so it's easy to get behind her as an athlete. And she provides such memorable moments, good and bad, from falling in the 4x400m at world champs to that brilliant run from behind to claim victory in the 4x400 mixed at the Olympics. Her run in the 4x400m mixed is one of my top moments from the OG. In contrast Sydney reminds me of Allyson Felix, carefully curated and a bit plastic with no real personality at all, the picture of her in a tiara makes it look like she won Miss Universe not the 400mh at the OG.

A third of the audience was Dutch, that would've been more than enough pressure for most athletes. I've seen other athletes fall apart at the start, I have a lot of empathy for the likes of ShaCarri Richardson who seem to struggle with the mental side when they're more than capable of running well. Bol failed to execute her race plan and the emotions came out because she felt she'd let her country down. Other athletes wept with tears when they won. They then had Femke Bol participating in the mixed relay team rather than in the women’s relay team, although their women’s team seemed relatively stronger. Without Femke the Women's team barely qualified. I guess the Dutch wanted to be 100% sure that their mixed team would qualify because the mixed relay was early in the Olympics, so they could indeed expect the USA to send in a B team. Running a 47.9 split really does put a different stress on the body than running a "normal" 49 low split. It does something to the energy reserves. 2.) It is not just that split. Femke herself told the next day that she did not sleep that night, and she felt like sh*t the next day. 4.) In the high stress Olympic environment and with heats and semifinals to be run, it is very hard to recuperate and replenish the energy stores of the body in a few days. 5.) Nope, she wat defeated by McLaughlin, but the silver for Cockrell was a handout by Bol who flubbered her race, and ran more than a second slower than her own PB where everybody else was setting shiny new PB's. Since then Bol and Cockrell have raced several twice, and both times Bol easily ran away from Cockrell with 0.75 and even 1.26 seconds.

I love Femke Bol. She is beautiful and has an amazing running style. She makes it look effortless. I would love to see her win a gold medal.

The problem with Femke is that prior to the Olympics the Europeans kept hyping her up as the Sydney killer with her inflated 50.95 PB time. But once the race happened, Femke turned out to be a dud-- there's no better way to say it. The fact is that the race wasn't even competitive and she barely medaled in her signature event -- one more meter and it would have been a USA sweep.

She lost because she altered her strategy, Femke always had a great final 100 kick you can see this in all her races but in Paris right from the start she tried to match Sydney's pace which she cannot do because Sydney is just consistently fast through out the race, this resulting in her gassing out early and that great kick of hers at the final 100 was gone. She should have just run her usual race instead of getting caught up in this hype between her and Sydney. Sydney would have still won but she would have been at least close to her if she still had that kick in the final 100.

One bad race does not make someone a dud. Bol has been performing at a high level for years. She ran a PB this year, she's made changes to her jumping and stride pattern and she's a very exciting athlete to watch.

@What_a_piece_of_work_is_a_m Excuses, excuses. Femke didn’t lose because she altered her strategy. She lost because she was the inferior runner. No matter what strategy she used she was never goind to beat Sydney.

@cruznk9 Yes, after all of the hype she was a dud when it counted the most. Being the fastest European is like being the fastest muppet.

Exactly 💯. I get that Femke is legit by they doing way too much to praise her. The mixed relay isn't even a real event and as long as Team USA are in the 4x400m relay, Femke and the Netherlands are not winning.

I agree. Bol is a hell of a runner. It's just unfortunate that one other girl is a God-like runner from another universe. It's like being the strongest man in the world and then Superman shows up.
