@jennifertaggart39255 жыл бұрын
So I think you have missed a very important opportunity to relate the work done at TRIUMF to the world of consumer (and space grade/military grade) electronics. One of the main reasons that TRIUMF was built was to provide a high energy proton source that can mimic the energy of energetic protons trapped in the magnetic field around Earth. Components used on spacecraft that orbit or travel through the proton belt, undergo extensive radiation testing on Earth to ensure that the components will not fail in space. One of these tests is called Single Event Effect (SEE) testing, where a device is bombarded with the protons to see if a proton can cause a bit flip (0 -> 1 or 1 -> 0) or latchup. Pretty much anything with a transistor can experience these effects, such as memory (DRAM, SRAM, etc.), CPUs, FPGAs, and GPUs. The accelerated electrons are also used for total ionizing dose (TID) testing. When a charged particle (in this case the protons and electrons) pass through the component, they deposit a small amount of energy. The energy deposited can lead to a shift in the threshold voltage of a transistor (voltage needed to turn it on) causing it to be permanently on or off depending on the type. For a demo, I highly suggest taking a GPU, benchmark it, take it to TRIUMF, put it in the proton beamline, then retest the GPU. The folks at TRIUMF would know what you're talking about if you told them you wanted to do SEE testing. If not, I work in the industry and could find you a good contact.
@KaustavMehta5 жыл бұрын
Jennifer Taggart I would love watching this experiment! It would be super interesting to see the factor by which compute and reliability is affected by random bit flips. I hope LTT sees this!
@cmdrblahdee5 жыл бұрын
wouldn't we already know that through the development of things like rowhammer?
@jennifertaggart39255 жыл бұрын
Rowhammer could be a result of radiation effects in the DRAM but it is not the sole effect. Depending on architecture, you can get a variety of effects, such as Single Event Functional Interrupts (SEFI) where a spike in current in one location could put logic gates in an undefined state, causing the GPU to hang. Once you power cycle though, the effect goes away (soft error). You can get random bit flips, burn outs, gate ruptures, etc. Some effects cause permanent damage and others are only temporary. Some architectures have error correction or redundancy that can protect against some of the SEE. Since the physics of how radiation is absorbed has to be considered on the material level, even variations between different production batches (same model) can see different effects due to fluctuations in the material layer thickness.
@Gungus-v1g5 жыл бұрын
Hey, I'm a highschool student and it's my dream to work in this industry. Can I ask how you got to this point? Do I need to get into a super good University for a decent chance? Thank you
@jennifertaggart39255 жыл бұрын
@@Gungus-v1g So I did my undergraduate in Physics (Ohio State Univ.) and my PhD in electrical engineering (Arizona State Univ.). Vanderbilt probably has the biggest radiation effects research group, especially for doing simulations. Georgia Tech has some research, Oregon State has a research reactor. Berkeley and Texas A&M have awesome cyclotron/ion beam facilities. Most people in the industry will have physics, electrical engineering, or material science degrees. You can take some classes at the undergraduate level but you will specialize in radiation effects research at the graduate level. Edit: I make these suggestions assuming you live in the U.S.. Not sure about other country's programs though I know of a few in Canada, France and Germany. I had internships at Intel and Sandia National Laboratories, also focused on radiation effects. Keep a lookout for relevant internships after your sophomore year. Companies in the aerospace industry and National labs will have more radiation related jobs than others. Also keep a lookout for NASA and DOE fellowships. It's a small knit community so the networking is more important than your school, but schools with radiation programs will help you make those connections easier.

No one said stupid, you just read stupid, because that's what happens when you're busy strawmanning someone instead of actually thinking about what they said. Btw, my overwhelming experience in life is that the first person to bring up race in a conversation _is_ the racist. No one mentioned race until you. You just got excited because you saw a chance to make everything about race, because you somehow think that endlessly obsessing over race isn't the very heart of all racism.

@@Joe-nq6hy Well, Shiva is kind of a strange god. He is a god seen as a Protector and Creator. Yet has a darker side of being a protector of Vampires, thieves, and a destroyer. SOOOooo...the FAKE sacrifice in front of the statue. Well, it is not odd.

As a science/engineering student, I really appreciate vid like this! Making science popular, even though it's overly simplified or not everything is explained, so it has not much valuable information, is great to inspire ppl to do great things, or support those capable of making actual science.

That being said, Linus and the team would need to spend at least couple of days to scratch the surface of understanding what's acually going on. Still, great job!
