A very large amount of years ago, rats were blamed for the bubonic plague. Since then, rodents have been blamed for all sorts of diseases, sometimes they are spot on, such as the prairie dogs of my home Colorado being full of nasty diseases that could kill you or your pets. The bias is real, but rats and mice are very clean creatures, only sticking to dirty places because that's where it's warm and where there is food. Also, getting bitten by a rodent causes infections for the same reason getting bitten by a person does, mouths are full of bacteria, the only reason you don't get sick from your own is because your body is used to your bacteria, not another person's.

I kept a deer mouse as a pet but it was a an orphaned baby who didnt even have her eyes open when I found her so I raised her on a syringe of goat milk from a baby and she was pretty much tame cause she knew me and saw me as her 'mommy' so she never bit me even as she got older. I also assumed since she was so young when i found her that she probably wouldnt have had time to really pick up any parasites since she was barely a week old when i found her. She was such a great little mouse I named her Peppy Pepito cause she was a peppy (lively active and high-spirited) little mouse. She liked to curl up in my hand when she was ready to go to sleep and let me give her cheekrubs til she passed out and then i would gently place her back in her nest under a half-log type thing i got from the reptile section of the petstore. i tried to make her enlosure as mouse-friendly as possible and used more natural things like rocks and wood half-logs and stuff like that since she was a wild mouse. she did LOVE running on her little wheel tho haha i would hear her up all night hearing her wheel spinning and spinning lol.

What a nifty trap. I wish more people cared enough to look for humane options or at least keep the deadly traps quick and painless. It's horrendous the kind of suffering we've deemed to be acceptable as long as the victim is considered a pest.

This is a great temp cage! But, as someone who has mice, there is not enough hiding spots for the mice and Kaytee tends to not have the best food for mice. I recommend getting Mazuri rat and mice pellets. Also, with a tank for a mouse cage, you should have a mesh or other breathable material for the lid. Again, this is a pretty good temp cage! But if you plan on keeping mice then this is not ideal.

Honestly, since it’s a temporary setup, he probably would have been better off just giving them some fresh food from the kitchen. Some fruit, vegetables, and grains. Then he didn’t even have to buy anything else.

@SeraliaAerials
@SeraliaAerials 2 жыл бұрын
@@callmekit_312 I’m not upset. I just don’t see how anyone could look at this and think it’s a viable permanent home for any rodent. Even with fish tanks you need some level of ventilation, which is why a completely closed lid tank with fish in it will typically fail. This is not the place for advice on keeping pets. This is for pest control.

I had pet mice in college. Got them from the pet store for a dollar each, being sold as snake food. Unfortunately at a house party somebody caught a wild mouse in the house and put it in the tank with the pets. It had mites and soon the whole tank was full of them. The house mouse was removed but the pets didn't last much longer.

Those native mice are definitely cuter than the introduced pet. Here in Australia we have a native water rat that they have collectively named the Rakali, in the hope it stops people thinking of them like European water rats, and helps to protect them. They are way cuter than European water rats.

Deer mice are so cute and so smart. I have 3 and they invented a game with the exercise wheel. One of them runs on the wheel and another hangs on the edge and goes around. They love this game. I've seen two of them hang on while the other powers the wheel. It's like watching an 3 siblings play together and their bond seems strong. When I clean the tank, I tell them "I gotta clean. Consider taking shelter" and they hide in their lavish coconut I've bedded with a soft towel. They are more than happy to stay out of my way when maintaining the tank. They have 3 completely different personalities. One is very scared and cautious. Another loves the running wheel and largely ignores me and my hand if I'm giving foor or water. The last one loves to jump and clime. I named them after cartoons bc I love cartoons. Speedy, Jerry and Tiny Tim. None of them have taken a nip at me, so that's good but I don't think they'd be dumb enough to bite the hand that feeds. My original plan was to release them in the spring bc it's super cold out these days but I'm not sure if they'd make it since I've been feeding and sheltering them for a while.

I really think the snap trap is the only trap that’s “humane” (assuming it kills them immediately). I remember sticky traps were supposed to be more humane but then the mouse just slowly dies. Some even lose their legs or tails trying to get out. If you see one in a sticky trap, take it outside, poor oil on it until it manages to wiggle free
@Feverm00n
@Feverm00n Жыл бұрын
Sadly, I’ve seen snap traps not work ideally in numerous ways (I worked in a barn building and my boss insisted on using those instead of more humane options), they often do snap awkwardly and from what I’ve seen, a decent percentage of the mice likely suffered before death.
