100# compound with a mediterranean finger draw? Respect! Much more a honest comparison here, although the accuracy clearly suffered as you obviously weren’t familiar with it and used arrows of different weight and balance. Not really the type of shooting that monster compound was designed for, but it still delivered nicely. As a compound shooter (Darton Consequence #70 with a thumb release aid) it’s enjoyable to watch archery nerds of really different styles have fun… whether it be ridiculously heavy longbows at medieval armour, shooting upside down on a poledancing pole with an asiatic bow, or even less weird stuff like olympic or barebows.

I love you got something out of the rumble that the latter video related to this topic had and what I got from this video is that there's a clear difference in what is put on the spotlight between medieval weapons and the modern ones, medieval and the modern arrows just showed that to penetrate steel there's a focus on momentum and inertia (thus,they could pass through Kevlar just like butter)but modern weapons and warfare from early 20th century onwards focuses more into hiw much kinetic energy the bullets can deliver, it's not a matter of what's better or worse but about the needs we have in a given historical moment...great job!!!

Nice work! As a compound archer, I am satisfied with your set up. You did everything right. Only small thing that might improve what your doing is to have your bow tuned so there is the least deviation in your arrow during flight as possible. The straighter that arrow is when it flies, the less energy it wastes and the straighter it is on impact, the better penetration it will have. But I wouldn't expect to see much difference.
@dashrendar532015 күн бұрын

Would be interesting to see bodkin tipped arrows fired from the compound bow……good mix of old and new. @dashrendar5320 solid carbon shafts have a close weight ratio to woods. Not sure if these were solid or hollow carbon shafts. 500 grains at 365 fps is 148 ft-lbs (201 J). That's a higher figure than any yew warbow. I suspect this bow could do better against hardened steel plate with heads optimized for that. I'm impressed you managed to penetrate the brigandine plate so deeply, given how broad the arrowhead is. Around a decade ago, Kevin Strother claimed to hunt with compound bows that deliver over 165 ft-lbs with very light arrows.
@dashrendar532015 күн бұрын
Yeah, it’s definitely a beast. As far as I know it’s the most powerful bow on the market and I agree if they made modern day optimized bodkin points I think it would do better.

The testing was very interesting. I was expecting the warbow arrow can do better then carbon arrow, but not full penetrate the riot shield. Still, it make the shield become unwieldy just like the ye ole day. Also hope you enjoy vacation in Da Nang.
@dashrendar532013 күн бұрын
Ha thanks my friend! Will do, yeah, the weirdness the war about arrows reacted to the riot. Shield was really strange to me. I thought it would punch right through a lot easier, but for some reason, it wasn’t quite getting it.
@mikeorick689815 күн бұрын
Told ya so! Modern compounds will shoot the same weight arrows faster and farther that hit harder when they get there than the old war bows and do it at lower draw weights. How they can take elephant, rhino, and cape buffalo. Should have kept going with the old wood arrows w bodkins/plate cutters from the modern bow; that's what we do.

The effectiveness of the compound bow may also be because of the carbon arrows as they are more stiffer than wood and transfer the energy to the target more effectively.
@dashrendar532015 күн бұрын
That certainly does help as Wood is not the best transfer of energy material. I think the biggest thing is just the high speed, vs armor speed is a huge factor.

It's also about energy, some bows can produce more energy with heavier arrows, some with lighter ones. Speed doesn't mean much when the kinetiic energy is too low to do anything. Generally though speed penetrates, mass crushes through targets at simiilar kinetic energies.
@dashrendar532014 күн бұрын
Indeed! That’s why I used modern arrows that weighed as much as the warbow arrows, I could not believe how heavy the one from “bishop” was

It would for sure. I just need to figure out how to fix them to the arrows. They don’t really make vodka style field points for modern arrows.

Honestly that was a great breakdown. I haven't shot my bow in a while. I have a bowtech sniper that I can tune from like 45 lbs to around 75. I personally prefer it at 55 which is where I have it set. More than enough to down a deer. Armor lol not so much. My thoughts on the compound you were shooting it to me looked like the draw length was too long for you. Also don't stonefist the handle all the pressure should be right between your thumb and pointer finger basically holding it with just the thumb and pointer finger. Stonefisting causes accuracy issues with compounds and give a release a shot with a d loop and peep sight. The modern bows focus more on accuracy and hell im not pro but I was consistently getting 3 inch groups at 60+yards. Just my 2c

Not sure its the bow so much as the arrow in particular the head shape on the Polycarbonate shield - the bodkins are quite wedge like so as they tear it open a little they are then engaging with much more of the plastic thus spreading out and getting the best of that deformation and elastic energy absorbing nature polycarbonate has. Where in the case of the thinner and sharper compound arrow heard those only need to break a relatively small area before they can sail on through the opening they have made. So many other variable in how stiff the shaft is, angle of impact, kinetic energy etc but I'd suggest that same arrow construction with a bodkin shaped head on it would be far less impressive as a direct comparision of just the arrow. Which really makes sense as modern steels mean that thinner blade like arrow head is cheap enough to make and yet still tough enough to survive the impact on a harder target - bodkins are a compromise required in history for production expediency it seems that isn't really required as much in the modern world.
@dashrendar532015 күн бұрын
It’s very true there are so many variables and I try to think of as many as I can but really there’s a lot that I miss and a lot. I don’t even know haha Best I hope for that people have fun watching it and that it sets out and proves a little bit of something
