Brilliant video about our national flag. My own saltire is hanging in the spare room window so is unlikely to get battered by the lovely Scottish weather. :) The doocot looks amazing after its restoration. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the god work. PS. I thought the music at one point almost drowned out Aileen's narration. 🧔👍✌

Our dovecot has been made into a small house in our small town, and I really preferred it in its natural state. Not far from our town is a magnificent dovecot in its natural state in a large field, and it's really impressive. I hope it's maintained enough to stop deterioration as these are rare historical heritage remnants of the by gone times in Scotland

Interesting that the patron saint of Russia is also St Andrew. Their Sr Andrew's flag (flown from their ships) is an azure cross on a field of white - opposite to ours. Why? I'm not sure! Also in maritime communication the St Andrew's cross denotes the letter "M" and that a ship is not moving. Great site - keep up the great work.

Yes the music is way too high in the mix, possibly to cover up the emotionless AI narration. I hope you change both. One more thing, and it’s a biggie……it’s called 'The Declaration of Scottish Independence’. The BBC a puppet of Westminster mounted a very effective propaganda campaign over decades they successfully renamed the Scottish Declaration as the more benign 'Declaration of Arbroath’ which you must agree has considerably less fire & pride of state and serves to diminish the chance of inspiring a further declaration.

The use of the saltire does not date from 832 AD. It wasn't officially adopted until 1384 to distinguish Scots soldiers from their French allies. There is no evidence of it bring used as a national symbol before that.
@TheScotlandChannel3 ай бұрын
This is debated by historians who are divided on this. However, this is a film about the origins of the Saltire based on the Scottish Flag Heritage Centre which dates the origins of the flag to 832AD. There is also no doubt that Scotland existed long before the Declaration of Arbroath.

What's the Danish claim to fame for their flag ?
@TheScotlandChannel3 ай бұрын
A number of historians are taking the date when Scotland's Declaration of Arbroath was accepted by the Pope as the time when Scotland came into being. However, England, which came into existence 92 years after Scotland, clearly existed as did Scotland before the Declaration and England's existence as a country apparently did not require Rome's acceptance to be regarded as a country. So it boils down to the fact that Scotland clearly existed before the acceptance of the Declaration of Arbroath by the Pope and its flag, the saltire, represented that country having its origins some 370 years earlier than Denmark's flag.

The Saltire is the oldest National Flag. Listen to the narration.
@TheScotlandChannel3 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. It all depends on when you think Scotland came into existence. Those who cite Denmark's flag as older, think Scotland only came into existence following the recognition of the Declaration of Arbroath by Rome even though Scotland clearly existed long before that.
@ixurlife80623 ай бұрын
@TheScotlandChannel Well I can clear that 1 up for you also you see Scotland as we know it had no recorded history before 1st century around the time the Romans arrive but Scotland as we know did not even exist until the 9th century see where we are going here the Saltire earliest record is 1503 a white background with a Red Cross St Andrews Cross on the blue background was formed in 1542 it 1st ever appeared in David Lyndsay's book "Register of Scottish arms" before these 2 points Scotland had no official flag because they were all clan flags. Where people get confused is because St Andrew was crucified in 60AD but they're ain't no flag it orginated as I said in the 15th century no records of this flag anywhere before then anywhere in the world it came about much later in life.

The unfortunate thing is, in recent years our wonderful flag has been politicised by the SNP. That should be made illegal. This flag belongs to all Scots, but for many, the first thing they now think of when they see a Saltire, is the SNP. We cannot allow our national flag to be bastardised in this manner. Much like the Swastika having been a peaceful symbol for thousands of years, the first thing people now think of when they see one, is the Nazi's. Our flag is for the nation of Scotland, it's for every Scot. It is not a political symbol, and should never be used as one. The fact the SNP have bastardised it, shows their total lack of respect for Scotland, and her people. I would hope the Scottish Flag Heritage Trust will make moves to make the politicising of our national flag illegal.
@TheScotlandChannel3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately Scott, it is probably not possible to decide who can and who cannot use our flag. But, unlike the union flag which has serious negative connotations for England as being associated with England's far right, that has never been the case with Scotland as Scotland is not the same as England in terms of outlook and also Scotland is a way more inclusive and welcoming country where people are far more willing to help those in need. With the independence movement, this is a civic nationalism, not an extremist cause as the London government wants you to believe so the Saltire will always reflect the true Scotland. Sadly, the Union Jack is being flown on many public buildings throughout Scotland on a very regular basis to enforce a unionist viewpoint and is therefore a highly charged political symbol unlike Scotland's national flag that in many Scottish towns, flies just once a year on St Andrew's Day despite the fact this is Scotland.
