19:00 - Regarding sinkholes in Florida, many houses in Florida are concrete slab construction, meaning the house is built on a roughly 1 foot thick slab of solid reinforced concrete. So if a sinkhole does open up, provided it doesn't engulf a majority of the house, it *should* hold up long enough for homeowners to 1) recognize Bad Things are happening, and 2) bug out. If you're on the street, best of luck you you, though.

Certain areas here in Florida are much more prone to sinkholes than others such as the one that opened under a resort hotel near Orlando some years back. Funny thing is my former area in Michigan has had some pretty good sized ones although not as bad as in Sinkhole Alley here. I had to laugh when we had one open downtown recently and it made the news in Ft Myers. The thing was only the size of a big beach ball. We rarely get them and when we do they aren't much to write about.

Concerning the flying balloon houses, I should add that helium isn't exactly the cheapest stuff around. Given the limited supply and resulting shortage of it, I imagine getting enough to lift a whole house would get VERY expensive real quick.
@BIGGUY0683 Жыл бұрын
Helium costs around $30-$50 USD per liter. A latex birthday balloon about a foot in diameter holds about 15 liters of helium. So using the example in the video, it’d take around 22,500,000 liters of helium to lift the house. With that in mind, it’d take around $750,000-$1,000,000 USD to buy the helium it’d take to lift the house.
@paulvamos73192 ай бұрын

I would love to feel bad for those persons who lost their house, but only an idiot builds a house so close to a water body. Common sense people 😀
@davidarundel6187 Жыл бұрын
Even with common sense , never underestimate nature , as I've seen a local river after nearly 4vweeks of rain , lift a house built in the early 1900s , get turned into a house boat , not fit to float in . That same storm , maged to get over the hills to the next playground , where it hit bridges , houses roads and more , with another 4 weeks of rain . All the rain made the geothermal areas more active , as their water levels rose . It was a fun month , as the city I live in , is full of fault lines and all hills are easily pulled apart with rain , or pick axe , even easier with machines - the ñewly exposed surfaces sometimes getting concrete sparyed to try stopping erosion . A newly opened section of the main north south road , was built over an active aquifer, near the surface , and is under constant repairs as a result of no geotechnical report .

And to think the cliff side temple built in China that houses three different beliefs - Taoism, Confuciunism and Buddhism - was built WITHOUT CAD and WITHOUT one single engineer or architect that was a college graduate, yet is still standing, pun intended, and in use centuries later. One more example of how modern technology that most of the world has become so dependent upon and addicted to, but our technology still can't compete with or live up to that. In my not so humble opinion. Closed or not, it's amazing! My Dad built houses in the early 70's. While limestone is soft and will erode because of the water table, that isn't the only cause of sink hopes, neither are old mines. When you remove anything from a space, to keep that space viable to prevent it collapsing in on itself, you must back fill or refill that space. Deep core oil wells are a prime example of that. When the well has run dry, deep core or otherwise, the empty space remains. Perhaps companies and corporations should take into account that space needs to be back filled to prevent collapse. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. If you empty it, you must refill it. It's really that simple a concept. ~ APRIL LIPKE
