We are back for part 3 of worlds BEST model car championship! The GSL Model Car Championship. This week Race cars!! Circle track, road course and drag strip!
Perhaps the most competitive scale auto contest in the world is held in Salt Lake City every 2 years. Attracting model car builders from all over the world, many of these autos are scratch built. and many are detailed kits and modified kits.
The contest is produced by the International Model Car Builders’ Museum in Salt Lake City. A unique museum presenting historic auto models and masters and patterns from some of the best know plastic models ever produced.
www.themodelcarmuseum.org/
• The International Mode...
Founder Mark S. Gustavson has announced that they will be ending the GSL in 3 years. There will be one more in 2022. This may or may not end the championship, but will end the championship as we know it. Ending the worlds best model car contest will create a vacuum, and "shift in the force" that may lead to some follow up or redux, who can say. Time will tell......
*******************************************************************
From the web site:
The GSL Championship was started in 1979 to provide an hospitable venue for professional-quality builders, of all ages, to compete where basic and advanced craftsmanship, innovation, and risk-taking are rewarded, respected and celebrated and where the friendly exchange of modeling information, ideas and techniques are encouraged. Additionally, attendees can enjoy and learn from a wide range of seminars, evening discussions , a day of tours of the International Model Car Builders’ Museum, the Museum-benefit Auction, and the Trade Show.
Since the start of this now world-renowned competition, we’ve welcomed thousands of competitors from around the globe, drawing competitors from North and South America, Mexico, and Europe. Widely recognized as the arena for pleasant but stringent competition, GSL also presents three days of instructional seminars, a tour of the International Model Car Museum, a Museum-benefit auction and 4 days of convivial fun.

I have to agree. There's little respect from those outside of the hobby. Same with bird carving. Some things are revered as art, but might only take a few hours or days to create....with only some artistic flare and no specialized skill. As a scratchbuilder who won a best-in-show at the old NNL national competion (a rival to SLC as the top show in the USA) back in the day, I know some of these models take years to create. My B-I-S model took 2 years to build and was 99% scratchbuilt. The painting (and weathering) alone on these types of models should be revered as art. Then you've got a vast array of other skills that need to be mastered at this level.

It was just great. Every GSL is unique. Every year there are two or three models that just amaze. And a few hundred more that are some of the best you have ever seen. This year there were three. The super seven, the post war Harley and the shark mouth funny car. So real they are unreal. And scratch built. From metal and a bit of plastic sheeting

Next week back to Steve’s to see the REBUILD of the railroad as he is also still tearing it out. Super cool. Then on to the final track on a 15” gauge that’s been under construction for ten years and yesterday they closed the loop!!!!! About a half mile of track. But... every 2 feet is one tie at 5 bucks. 4 spikes at 1.10 each. One case of beer at 14 bucks And 4 feet of rail at 8 bucks per foot. 12 pound rail. So not just 10 years for work but expensive too.

We have car building memories from our teen years and he returned to modeling cars probably 25 to 30 years ago. That's very unfortunate, that this is the last year. Model cars, and model building, has seen an explosion, in the market, since the Inception of the pandemic. Turns out, people really love to build and create. And the level of detail, that comes out of these shows, is just absolutely amazing. And you guys have done a phenomenal job of capturing these Masters of art.

Some intense models in this video. I'm curious as I write this in May 2024 if there are any car/truck model magazines being published. Most of the well known automotive mags from the past are gone. These videos are nice, but for me, they'll never replace a quality magazine. FineScale Modeler magazine is still around (and quite nice with few ads actually), but the exceptional high detail models such as those seen in this video don't get much coverage. Thanks for posting.

Amazing models. I like to show friends a photo and they think it is a real car or motorcycle. I grew up in Decatur, Illinois. My friends and I entered model contests at Bolay's Hobbies. Went to a track laying party. Much beer. Closed the loop on a 15 inch gauge 1/2 scale recreation of the Sanpete Valley Railroad. A small part, about 100 feet, is laid on the original grade. Ballast next and a second 4-4-0 is coming from California to go pilot to pilot for driving a golden spike. Film at 11. Er.. on the eleventh? Oh heck when they get it we will film it and post it. How cool is that?!!!

The "wrap" in your three part series is testimony to folks still crafting quality models and in many cases, scratch building miniatures. I would understand if the main organizer of this show may want to step down. To leave the modeling world in a lurch without a competition to join and to hone our skills would be criminal. My skills have never been that good but from what you filmed there are some really talented folks out there. Is it me or did this show seem bigger than the last one you covered? Well done you kids. Mark g started this about 35 years ago. Ran every year. Then he announced it was ending. He just couldn’t do it. He has lots of help mostly from the two mikes but others as well. Anyway he runs it. Period. In his way. So when he killed it others said they would like to take over and keep it going. Nope. If you want to do a contest do it. Don’t take over the GSL. Anyway he started it back up every two years. And he barely can do it. It’s harder than hell. Even with help. So one more. And lots of people want to (again) take it over. But if they screw it up, or even just change it into something mark doesn’t like.... anyway I expect someone will start something else. But who knows. There is another contest. Mark sort of started it too, well mostly just named it called the NNL. (Nationally Nown Luminaries) one of those jokes that’s not funny. There is an east and west one and sometimes like 5 a year. But it’s not a contest. Just a display. In protest of contests and judging. But on one from Australia is going to bring in a scratch built brass race car to an NNL. So..... anyway it’s been a great run and if the 2022 is the last one then it just is.

I have subscribed and, at leisure will trawl through your other stuff. But, just going by what I have glimpsed of your interests I think that I can recommend to you guys one of my favourite guys on You Tube, his name is Marty. Marty is living near Melbourne Australia, and he started taking these beat up, dinged up Matchbox cars, dug up from kiddies back yards and rebuilds them, making them as close to factory as is humanly possible, hampered at times by a pesky Koala named Kevin. He is a hoot, I really think you would both enjoy his channel, Marty's Matchbox Makeovers, Have Fun, Carlos. Look forward to trawling through all of your videos, Thank You.

G’day! We will look into that channel for sure! Have you seen our show on the hot wheels track with 20,000 cars? In truth they aren’t hot wheels. The first track was so loud you couldn’t be is the same room with it. So he took a bunch of cars and made molds and cast the thousands of cars from solid resin with other wheels that don’t wear out as fast but mostly are quieter. Still loud standing there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXmximSLe5eretk

Hi!(G’day) hum... trying to figure that out. Don made 1:8 scale wheels from aluminum for his Cobra, and I showed a photo of that I think on the show on his drop bottom gondola. Or 3D printing. But Don is the only guy I know that has done that. I think.... he used a CNC lathe and milling machine. Blew me away but I don’t know how they go about that. He turned the wheel on the lathe and milled the “spokes” our on the milling machine. Dave Rotan (Hartford Products) has done that sort of. We showed his process on one of the two shows on him. But we were talking about how he makes train parts. But it would work for wheels. He 3D prints the parts in some type of PLA that he uses that he has found will allow him to pull a Vulcanized rubber mold from. He then can cast parts in white metal. The mold heats to 350 degrees Fahrenheit under extreme pressure and while that melts the PLA the rubber hardens fast enough that he gets a good mold even though the master is nothing but a puddle when you open the mold. Anyway I want to try that at some point but have not done a show on it. Must be dons CNC aluminum wheels.

That Caterham is NOT scratchbuilt. It's a Tamiya kit that Mark Jones then went on to detail like a son of a gun. I know Mark through Modelcarsmag forums and he posted this build as a WIP. We all saw it come together. Just so ya know.
@ToyManTelevision

I pulled out the Tamiya kit and wow, totally different. It won the Gerald Wingrove scratch building award, supposedly for 100% scratch built. So I figured it was. In this case there was little if any information on the model at the contest. Some people had paper even video of their build so you knew. I this case nothing. I can see both sides of any debate on that, some saying lots of paper makes a model seem more important than it really is. But nothing and you have no idea if it’s scratch or pure box kit.
