I had the opportunity to sit in AX201 when she visited New Zealand in the early 1990s. An awe inspiring experience considering what the car is and the people who have ridden in it. Definitely punching above my weight! Unforgettable.

I understand your feelings--I arranged (I knew it's caregiver) for my father to sit in AX201, August 2004, at Monterey, Ca. He never forgot it, either. AX201 is forever a "member of the family". A tip--look up the photos of Wenda Parkinson, from Vogue 1950, with AX201.

So many years I spent polishing this car while it was in storage at SC Gordon LTD Luton during the Eighties.. a bottle of silvo per year was used. The silver plated timings would oxidise in a month, but fond memories of my apprenticeship spent caring for this piece of history.

It is a mystery to me why I was selected for this video, only having watched news clips on YT??? The only thing car related I have watched lately was tv coverage of last weekend's the Akropolis Rally. But I am pretty sure there wasn't any Rolls Royces in it. The closest link to anything to do with Rolls Royce for me is some weeks back. A Swedish programme about car rescuers in Stockholm, in which one of the cars rescued was what was left of a crashed Bentley Turbo R originally bought and owned, back in the eighties, by Benny Anderson of ABBA fame. So it is a mystery to me why I was selected to be recommended this video. As for what is the world's most expencive car, that keeps changing depending on which of a handful of extremely rare cars has changed owner most recently. A Ferrari 250 GTO 1962 model sold at auction in 2018 for 48.4 mill dollars was reported to be the world's most expencive car. Until Mercedes Benz put up for auction one of only 2 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Coupe', designed by Rudolf Uhlenhaut, where it sold for 135 million Euros.

@@gary5481 Interesting to know. Thanks for info. If I am not mistaken there is a Bugatti model which there only was made 4 of, and one of them owned by Bugatti himself, which might, or might not, still exist - although it probably was lost in the second world war. But if any of them should turn up likely would be a contender for most expencive car in the world.

G'day Car Dude, Cripes! I thought that wide-shot was taken at a Saudi oil sheiks' convention.😉 I'd love to see an estimate of what the total cost of all those 'Rollers' and Bentley's might be. It truly was a significant point in history when, mechanical/electrical engineer, Henry Royce was introduced to, Fulham car dealer, Charles Rolls at the Midland Hotel, Manchester on 4 May 1904. They had absolutely no way of predicting what an indelible mark their company would make on the world. RR supplied chassis for early 'armored cars' and aircraft engines during WW1 As far as I understand it, for many years, one could take a Rolls Royce, and later a Bentley, to any one of a number of specialist, luxury 'coach makers', and they would fashion a unique motor car for you...if you had enough of the folding stuff. These days the Motor Car division of RR offers so many possible variations of their vehicles that the hardest part is deciding what you want in your 'one off' prestige 'motor'. They even have a gentleman; possibly with the steadiest hand in the world, who does RR's 'pinstriping' by hand; (no pressure!). In fact, I've seen a fascinating video on KZbin about the 'pinstriping' gent and all the other folk who will make you a 'uniquely customised' RR. If you had told Messer’s Rolls and Royce that their relatively tiny aircraft engines would, one day, power mammoth 'flying machines' that could transport more than 200 people, you would have ended up in a fair dinkum 'looney bin'. It is said that only after the name, 'Coca-Cola', Rolls Royce is the most well-known 'branding' in the world. The fact that the name still exists is a minor miracle. The car and aircraft engine divisions of the company have been 'shuffled' around over a dozen owners and configurations; split up, reunited then split again, even parts of it spending long period under UK government ownership. The first 'Silver Ghost' RR, (AX201) is special in many ways. For instance its radiator does not have either the horizontal, or the later, vertical radiator bars that instantly identify Rolls Royce’s, even to those with little or no knowledge of motor vehicle history. Much of the 'set in stone' branding of Rolls Royce motor vehicles is directly traceable to their almost universal exposure in old and new movies and their regular appearance on worldwide news bulletins that involve the ultra-rich and famous. There was even a motion picture named, 'The Yellow Rolls Royce'. The late, Queen Elizabeth II, had a liking for Rolls Royce’s and Bentleys, sometimes said to be 'gifts' from the companies, as did her father and other Heads of State around the world. Queen Elizabeth had a personal preference for 'Claret' coloured cars with, in the early days, little details like her preferring round wing mirrors. In the heady world of Rolls Royce; you get what you want, IF, you can afford it. I’ve ridden in several ‘Rollers’ and a couple of Bentley’s and for decades I’ve particularly lusted over a certain kind of Bentley. I’m nearing 70 now and I figure I still might get one; if I win our national lottery 5 times! 🤣 I’m not sure if this old saying refers to Rolls Royce’s or Bentley’s but it certainly applies: “You either have one or you want one.” Finally, is owning one of these beautiful cars practical, without the lifestyle to match? The answer for me is, sadly, no. The routine servicing fee would wipe out my annual pension. There’s absolutely no way I’d park mine in a multi-story car park or take a chance on leaving it outside our local ‘mediocremarket’! 😟 Cheers, Bill H. P.S. Before I cop any flak from fellow 'ordinary' people who love these cars as much as I do; I understand some have spent years saving to acquire a new or used one. That plan never worked for me but I applaud those who have. Good on you! B.H.

AX 201 was owned by RR/Bentley cars, Crewe. This factory and the Bentley brand was bought by VW so AX201 came with the deal. RR was bought by BMW. As AX201 is a RR it doesn't fit into the product range of the new Bentley business. The accountants decided to liquidise their asset and sold AX201 along with its sister vintage RR, a 10HP. Both cars were sold to a world renown collector who lives abroad, but the cars will stay in the UK.
