Ha! I gamed the Top Flite Magna in the mid-late 90's. I was about a 15 hcp back then, and I almost always hit it straight, but not really far. My drives averaged about 215 yds back then. I liked the feel, and the affordability (I was in my mid 20's and I had a limited budget). It did lack spin and checking around the green. I probably still have a few rolling around in the garage somewhere. I should dig one out and put it up against the current balls.

Yeah me too, I remember them being pretty good back in the day but when you compare them now there’s a lot to improve. Be great to hear how they compare to modern balls for you! 👍🏌️‍♂️

Molitor +110 was a ball in play during 1980-82. It was like hitting a stone, if you missed the sweet spot on your clubs. 😂

As a teen in the late 90s early 00s I use to play exclusively with the Dunlop Titaniums. They were affordable and I thought they were great. Recently found a few at my parents place in my old golf bag so thought id give them a go. They felt horrible and my wicked slice returned 😂

I have played the Magna and Molitor. I think the worst I played was the Maxfli ST - it spun the ball so much you couldn't hit it straight or far.

I reckon in the 70s early 80s when all these balls were about there was an abundence of the 1 piece crap. Others i remember finding, well usually in halves were St Peter Halo, Apollo, Player & Penfold Ace. All these balls were great for the beginers who were not bothered losing one in the long grass or water hazard. For anyone who gave a hoot about their score it was either Macgregor Tourney a wound ball with a Surlyn Cover and Titliest Balata that were wound with a Balata cover. They were like sponge, in fact you would potentially lose 30 yards off the driver distance but the spin into the greens was unreal, true drop and stop

Topflite is an ancient ball. The Moliter is too. I can’t remember when I played any of those balls. Topflite today is truly a different company. It sold through bankruptcy. Callaway now produces golf balls from the location previously occupied by Topflite.

@@upclosegolf Callaway invested over four million dollars into the location and many jobs were saved. It’s in Chicopee MA in the former Topflight location and subsequently was bought by another company (Quester I think) then sold in bankruptcy proceedings. Callaway swooped in and saved the day and now has an incredible manufacturing plant.

We used to buy Molitors one at a time ($2 each) at the local course when we were kids in the 70s and couldn’t afford a whole dozen, or even a sleeve. (IIRC, the “sleeves “ were actually triangles). They were the most expensive balls available at the time, and were supposed to be made with extra precision. They were indeed very hard, and didn’t spin much, but they also lasted more than two holes, which premium balata balls at the time usually didn’t.

Found a molitor recently and played it a couple 9 hole rounds until it found the deep weeds once more. I'm not a good enough player to know it from anything else to be honest. Had no idea it was a rare find, though I could tell it was an oldie.

The Magna was meant for begginers, as its size made it easier to hit and get up in the air. However it won't go as far as a normal sized ball. Callaway now make a modern version called the "Supersoft Max".

I used to play The MOLITOR Golf ball and really liked it. Nowadays I usually play TOP FLITE XL 2000 and WILSON ULTRA or STAFF/ PROSTAFF.

I was gifted half a dozen "Price's Everlasting" golf balls in the 1970's. Terrible!!! Worst ball ive ever come across, like hitting a rubber ball. I game callaway supersoft at the moment not a bad ball. Often available in the six for a fiver basket in the pro shop 😊

Just a thought .. if you appreciate the game and your efforts at improving your skills (other than maybe economics) why play with junk/used balls. If they are in the hazards there's a reason. Find a quality ball in your price range. You won't regret it.
