If we work off this premise we can go deeper. Sage started as an Old Magic advocate, a literal "Conservative" by the shows standards. If we assume that over time SageMary would become prevalent, we can conclude that Sages character is meant to represent someone that the writer wanted to "save", an old friend who they split up with over ideology. Rose and Sages developing relationship would be a form of wish fulfillment where the writer actually gets to "convert" their friend from their "Conservative" beliefs. Somebody made a remake of the scene where Sage is sexist to Snap, but it feels a lot more natural. Sage is still acting sexist in that scene, but it's clear that in the remake, she is unintentionally sexist because she is trying to sympathize with Snap for "not understanding girl friendships" instead of straight up demonizing him for it. Issue is, this is(at least superficially) anime. We've had heroes that fit number one to a T since Shonen has been a thing. It's pretty well accepted that there's gonna be an idiot battle maniac because it gives cool fights and it makes them silly but endearing. Number two is just a clique girl. Weebs, until very recently, were majorly considered social outcasts and thus made fun of. It does not help her case when she starts fights with the goofball that means well over seemingly small stuff. TL:DR Rosemary is closer to the status quo of Goku-esc idiot fighters and Sage is closer to the Bullies that a lot of the people watching had to deal with growing up. Thus, Sage looks worse in general comparison.

@@akamatsusan9537 That's fine, you can like that xD. I'm m an anime artist, I would just add a design on her hat and dress at least, and maybe change her hairstyle a bit.
How I would try to write her better: First, give a reason for her mother not liking new magic. So, let's differentiate both: old magic comes from yourself, it uses your own energy to power itself. However using too much old magic can weaken the user to the point of exhaustion, or even to the point of kill someone. New magic however comes from the pterospheres, it uses the planet's energy to power itself, but the prolongated use of it drains the planet's vital energy, thus creating the rot. Sage's mother discovered about it, but was threatened by the people who profit with the sales of pterospheres. If she told about what she discovered, they would kill her and her family like they did with other people. She didn't wanted something bad to happen to her family, so she kept her mouth shut since then. That's why she always taught old magic to Sage, while pointing out that new magic isn't that reliable. ____________________________ Now, about Sage herself. Let's actually give her a reason to get mad about Rosemary in the party episode. Let's say that Rosemary was always the "leader" of them two, thus they always did what Rosemary wanted to do first, while she brushed off what Sage wanted to do. Instead of showing them already going to the big city in episode 1, show them living on Peeble. There we see their interactions with their respective families and how none of them allowed the two to go to the High Guardian Academy. Then in that night, Rosemary decided to flee and called Sage to go with her. Sage was reluctant at first, but when Rosemary said that she wouldn't need Sage at all, Sage started to feel guilty and decide to go with her. Now this gives a real reason for Sage to snap out at Rose in the party since she's tired of Rosemary always forcing them to do what she (Rose) wanted to do, while Sage's wills were always neglected.

One example of a crybaby character who works really well is Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon. I mean, the pilot episode literally states that in the title! But she’s also confident, charming, and cute, and grows out of that state to stop relying on others and take things more seriously. But even when she was a crybaby, it was still relatable and came from an understandable place as she was forced into all of these crazy situations where she could literally be killed. Sage has no excuse! She has no way to defend her B.S. points, but Usagi knew how to stand up for herself at least, and could have some cool, adorable sassiness, and actually brought up good points when arguing with others (Mostly Rei, ofc).

The show really forgot that they had set up Rosemary as the main character in this story, huh? Sage's personality is infuriating, and any interesting story we could have with her is thrown out the window because of all the holes in the magic system. Personally, I saw their fight at the party less like a catty argument and more like Sage trying to needle her "friend" into changing her personality into something *she* would like better. And instead of trying to keep having fun with her friends at the party, she would rather sulk and mope around to try and guilt trip them. Same thing with Thyme’s argument, trying to get her to say she's right and pick her side in a fight. It's a very childish character that was made worse by the fact that you can tell the writers didn't think they were writing her that way.

Why didn't her parent's train her to be a badass in old magic and send her to a school with new magic users to send a message like: "Hey!! Because you took the easy way out, you can't be as badass as me!!!!" If Sage knew she was going to enter into a school to compete for the title of Guardian and be at a disadvantage to her classmates, Why didn't she learn about the curriculum from her parents and train herself to stomp the competition?!?! Her whole character is a symbol of incompetence caused by being too traditional.

I feel like my biggest issue with this show’s characters is simply that there’s too many of them, so none of them actually feel like they’re fully fleshed out and all of them are annoying. It would’ve made a lot more sense for them to whittle the main cast down to 4. Keep Rosemary as the spunky protagonist but tone her down and give her Thyme’s ambition and motivations, since the dying forest plot was the only thing in this show I found potentially interesting. Keep Sage as the cautious best friend, but remove all the petty bullshit and allow her to be the reasonable one of the group (essentially, her and Parsley can easily be condensed into one character). Keep Snapdragon mostly the same, but keep him as a male character to add balance to the group & avoid the “only women can be feminine” stereotypes. It would also avoid the “cis men are trash” thing this story has going on, which alienated a LARGE portion of their potential audience. I do think they can still include a trans character, but for the sake of not muddling the plotline they should’ve made the character already know they were trans before the story started. I think Rosemary would be the best contender personally since she’s not distinctly masculine or feminine. As for the final character, I would say to combine Amaryllis and Thyme’s personalities for a character that’s snarky, tells it like it is, and can hold her own in a fight, but doesn’t come off as overly cruel like Amaryllis or just a brick wall like Thyme. The school setting as a whole also felt entirely unnecessary, so I think it’d be much more interesting if Rosemary and Sage set out to find the mystery of the forest and Snapdragon and Amaryllis were eventually roped in along the way. This would allow the team to shorten the story to about half its length and avoid wasting resources on animating crowd scenes and painting like 500 backgrounds, so the animation budget could be used more effectively to make some half decent fight scenes.

This is good. I actually like having Snap just be very feminine and Rose being trans. Having Rose be trans AND a main character would mean she would get an actual personality rather than just her identity which would be pretty good representation(If they did her character well which in this timeline they already haven't but y'know.). Having the only trans character(Excluding Snap since he canonically hasn't transitioned yet) as a BG self insert was a terrible idea which resulted in him being a mouth-piece for Raye(Ray? Idk how his name is spelt) and having no personality other than what the writers wanted on any given day. Having an MC be trans would mean that they would have to actually give her a character. And Snap being very feminine but not trans would also be good because a lot of stigma sits around feminine men so showing the opposite of that stigma would be great.

I would prefer that she was this aloof person who actually stuck with old magic and is confident of her old magic abilities, basically the equivalent to a hipster. Ep5 could have shown what old magic could do as compared to new magic. And she could potentially put amaryllis in her place. But she's just fake, she doesn't have the talent to master old magic, and only does OM because she just wants to be a contrarian in that scene for no reason. Just one simple argument and she flew out of the room crying to play the victim, she doesn't have the level of EQ to hold a conversation, it's sociopathic. And this is a main character that people need to root for or at least be invested in. It's also pretty hypocritical of her to throw a huge crybaby tirade on rose/aster, but in ep8 she has a crush on mermaid snapdragon. So rose can't crush on other people yet sage can do that...okay.

If you want so bad for your main character to have the “I come from tradition but need to embrace the new ideals and I end up doing so that pays tribute to my traditions and allows me to keep up with people” you can’t just fill their story with one contradiction after the other. Like she was like “ok I’ll learn new magic”, but next she’s like “but I wanna use old magic teacherrrr” like one of those kids who asks for more homework. Then yes, one day she’s listening to Parnell, a BOY, talk about feelings (unless the show is like “Parnell is a girl turned boy so aye ok”), but next episode she’s like “BOYS don’t talk about feelings in friendship while girls talk about feelings in their friendship”. It would have been much better to explain Old magic as being able to bend the laws of nature, but not completely break them; that would mean it would be less powerful & less useful then New Magic, but it respected the world around it and didn’t use shortcuts. Whereas New Magic could break the Laws of Nature and was able to do things that even Old Magic would deem impossible, however it was more likely to upset the natural balance and cause unforeseen consequences (like causing weird weather patterns or making Magical objects around them act up.) I could even see ancient spirits be angered by New Magic because of how it upsets the Equilibrium, and Spirits could attack people because of that. Not to mention since New Magic uses so many shortcuts, its students are less respectful of the world around them and can even act like their actions don’t have consequences. And maybe the reason why Sage’s mother gave up New Magic was because she could sense what her actions were doing to the world around her, and didn’t want to cause more damage.

The character screams and cries about not wanting to fight every episode which sounds like it would get annoying quickly right? Except, when the main characters are in a fight and lives are at stake, he steps up, every single time. i agree for the most part, sage is an entitled brat who always gets what she wants or else but in the halloween episode rose is completely on the wrong and sage have every reason to be angry about this roae suddenly changes plans they agreed on that sage was excited to do as friends, and last moment rose changes plans to do what she wants, and belittle sage's interests sage would compete for worst character if it wasnt for rosemarry being the worst person on this earth just as entitled, twice as self centered, the clumsiwst warrior youve ever seen until a battle begins and she suddenly can conjure the mighty powers of plot convenience to be a masterful warrior but unlike sage, at least rose is consistantly awful

It's hard for me, as everything you say about Sage is correct. But I give the win to Rosemary because, she's Sage's childhood friend. She's tolerated this their whole youths together. She enables Sage's behavior. She doesn't throw the "you changed" line back at her, meaning Sage has always acted like this. One could argue that Rose is 'on the spectrum' and incapable of understanding the situation, then why is she allowed to be a guardian? I'd conclude Rose is the single worst character, but Sage is the worst part of the show because it's lack of world building may have addressed some of her issues

I honestly think Aster is just in the series to give writers an excuse to pair rose with sage. to make it a scenario of girl meets boy, boy is inept and a asshole, girl decides that she doesn't like boys cause of a bad experience, girl ends up with her "best" friend.

I have a great idea for how to rewrite the series. I never liked how cut and dry it was the “chosen ones” the four girls that were “destined to find each other and stop the evil thing” was so cut and dry, especially since they didn’t even have a dynamic, but imagine, Snapdragon has just figured out their gender identity crisis and the four girls try to do some weird Hail Mary quest thing, but they can’t succeed. Until they realize they were made of the wrong members and Snapdragon was the fourth girl, not *insert character here* because she was a girl on the inside the whole time, but they just couldn’t see it until she transitioned. Wouldn’t that be beautiful?

Good point on Snapdragon being the inner girl.

Semi related to the Thyme situation but if memory calls correctly doesn’t she says she “doesn’t mess with that sh*t” when Sage ask her about new magic? Then what where you doing in class and agreeing with Amaryllis?!?!?
@lavendermarshmallowplant32292 жыл бұрын
I like that you acknowledge that there is some credence to the whole old magic is valid like new magic thing--like how you mentioned that sage's mom might actually have good reason for why she stopeed, it's just that they used an awful character to relay that arc and just badly explained the whole system in general.

5:28 can we talk about how based Amaryllis is in this scene tho

they were both wrong in the part argument. rosemary watched her sign up for it and went behind her back to do a different thing instead of talking to her. but also sage didn't ask if rose wanted to do it with her and then got upset that she didn't.

I found a way to re write Aster. Remember that blonde guy that rosemary was paired with? Yeah him. Aster comes from a long family of knights, who are very skilled in battle strategies. Aster had 2 younger sisters that he loved dearly with all his heart. His father led him to believe that they needed to be protected. He was told this at the age of 5. He trained hard but was a bit slow on reaction time. But his speed was pretty good. When he was paired with Rosemary, he felt this need to protect her. The reason why, is because she reminded him of his sisters. Though it was unbearable at times he could handle someone with a personality like rosemary’s. He isn’t used to women fighting due to women not fighting often at his home town. Idk man I just made it along the way I tried.

all i've seen of HGS makes me feel like the writers realized Sunday afternoon the scripts were due Monday morning so they just went with the first draft they hastily wrote out in 12 hours while high.

The new magic thing could've been a really good and crucial part of the plot, like maybe the reason Sage's mom never used New Magic again could've been because it was an evil and corrupt magic and then when Sage starts to use New Magic she becomes distant with her friends and slowly starts turn evil making her have character DEVELOPMENT, then her friends try to save her from the corrupt path she's going towards, making the bond between the friends stronger.

I dunno. Redbud is a psycho that throws any attempt at coherent world-building out the window when her open attempts to murder children goes completely unremarked. But she’s pretty funny.
