The most interesting high-end set I've seen is a rather standard Staunton designed set, but made from mammoth tusk ivory. Ivory of course is illegal to sell, but not prehistoric mammoth ivory dug up from the frozen tundra.

Most beautiful chess-set imo is the Vijaya Adventurer rosewood set sold by chessbyindia. Mainly the knight`s aestethics is a great blend between functionality and art, and the horse`s face looks like a happy and competent war-horse if that makes sense. Tournament sized pieces, king height 96mm.

The look of the plant chess set is actually based on Josef Hartwig’s bauhaus chess set. I think it’s one of the coolest designs because all the pieces look like how they move. The bishop is an x, the knight is an L-shape and the rook and pawns are big and small cubes. It’s really neat.

A lot of these clearly have solely decorative purposes, so I agree with Hikaru, the first was the ugliest. Like you don't buy a Dragon Set or a plant set to play blitz, you buy them to have a nice looking garden/living room, and maybe play for fun once or twice with no clock or anything. But the first set? Doesn't have ANY purpose, it's not better looking, is not more functional, is not cheaper.

Someone I knew bought a fancy chess set, Chess set of the Gods, you would get a piece every month or so for like $20. If you bought them all, you got the board for free. Every piece was different, at that time I could keep track of things but, the appearance of the pieces made it hard to do that, the dude was shady, we were playing, I am saying, look it has to be a Bishop, because your knight couldn't be there with the move order. I didn't want to argue, said you win. A triple weighted tournament set and a roll up board, all I need.

The thing that I really hate about the melty set is that it doesn't seem to understand what makes a chess set so iconic. It's about simplicity and elegance, and clean lines. For a high end chess set, you are looking for beautiful craftsmanship which means handmade pieces that are also extremely precise and well repeated. Chess sets made in glass or steel can be beautiful and striking. A chess set made in rare wood can certainly justify a high cost. But making pieces that are deliberately weird and ugly is not "interesting". It's not even a conversation starter, because what conversation do you have? "Oh yeah, I just bought it from Louis Vuitton". Compare to "Ah yes this was owned by grandfather" or "I had this set made by an amazing local woodworker" or even "I designed it myself".

The issue with the first set is there was a mistake. Someone labeled it a chess, set, but in actuality it's a butt plug set. Nothing to do with chess, levy confirmed this as he happens to have that unique collection.

I like the bronze sculpture one. You want the pawns to look dumb and dusted with life as you sac them. The typography one doesn't hurt the eyes for Not Point Two Seconds. The Dragons are great but the glass should be fibre and the pieces differentiable
