THE WORST CRUISE SHIP CABIN // MSC Meraviglia - Studio Solo Inside Cabin Tour

Welcome onboard MSC Meraviglia, the first Meraviglia-class cruise ship from MSC Cruises. I'm onboard this ship for a 10-night cruise out of Brooklyn, New York City, up through New England and into Canada.
In this video, I'm going to give you a full cabin tour of the room that was automatically assigned to me prior to boarding the ship. The cabin I had booked was a Studio Inside cabin, a cabin type specifically designed for one passenger only.
I couldn't believe the room itself when I opened the door - I'm not convinced that this cabin is fit to be sold as an individual cabin, and would be much better suited to be sold as an adjoining cabin to the room next door, if booked together.
One of my biggest pain points with this cabin is that the room I booked was indeed going to be small, but the website stated that it would contain a 'single bed'. While I arrived to a larger bed setup, I'm sure you'll agree that it has a significantly impacted comfort level due to being a sofa bed, and it also compromises other parts of the room with this choice of furniture.

I was in that room last year. It was fine for me because I only slept in it. I just left it as a sofa so I could have more space and get into the closet.

I had the same setting in MSC Meraviglia Room number 9292. Coupled with the space under the bed, it can't be vacuumed. I found a lot of pills, a T shirt and some candies under it, that i couldn'tt even reach to take them out, Deck 7 and 8 right under my room is the Carousel Lounge. I could feel the speaker till 10:30pm, and it was so dusty, my allergies was off the charts. I totally agreed it's the worst cabin room in my 23 cruises, but I probably do it again if it's the only available room in a must go cruise. I came from humble beginnings, so I have seen worst. Primarily, cabin rooms are where I sleep, shower, and change . Everything I came on the ship for is outside the room

What a great comment - so interesting! Re: the lounge underneath your room, I believe the Carousel lounge has become a nightlife venue onboard Euribia, so will be intrigued to see the impact that could have on passenger cabins nearby… I’m not sure I’d take this room in future - maybe for a short cruise, but 10 nights would’ve broken me (or my back) on that bed I reckon…

I actually just booked an 11-night cruise in this cabin. It was a really great deal for the price I paid, and I figure I'm only ever gonna be in the cabin to sleep anyway, so it'll be plenty for me.

I think it’ll be fine if you’re expecting it - my experience was really disappointing as I had no idea it was coming. I also didn’t get a bargain, so that would’ve softened it too if I had! Have the best trip!

I literally was going to book this room for my dad last week and changed my mind and paid the extra $170 for a standard cabin 😅whewww I would have never heard the last of it if he had to sleep on a sofabed for a week ! @FraserAtSea I would tell them I'd take a leftover crew cabin to that. I sailed on the MSC Seashore in the summer. It was absolutely not my style at all, and it would take a lot to get me back on an MSC ship. But one advantage it did have was that the balcony cabin (the balcony being a rare choice for me) was beautiful. 10 days on that spinecracker?? My thoughts and prayers go with you.

Just booked this cabin for myself November 24th 2024 to Bahamas. I think i will be fine Im very petite. I cruised the Meraviglia last year twice on a balcony room myself and it was very large.

You must have been at the bow of the ship. I was in the exact same cabin layout in room 10380, at the stern. We both have the same concerns about this configuration. Simply changing the closet doors to accordion style doors would fix one problem. What is really needed is a way to make the bed comfortable - but not as a convertible bed. Instead, a pullman style bed should drop down from the ceiling, making it easy to convert the room between its two purposes. What did you think about the cruise itself?

Good idea to have a pull down - I hadn’t even thought of that! The cruise itself was ok - my vlogs will show more in a few months - it was littered with operational issues if I’m honest… How about you - enjoy it?

@@FraserAtSea - I enjoyed the cruise in spite of all the things that MSC handled wrong. For example, I think that fixed dining times and seating arrangements work against solo travelers, as MSC dining is not set up to assign solo travelers to shared tables upon request. Another issue is the quality of food offerings. The complementaty dining areas serve lackluster food, reminiscent of a catering hall/wedding mill The environment is glitzy, but it doesn't make up for forgettable food. The specialty dining areas are decent, and if I could have bought a 6-7 day plan beforehand, I'd have eaten at the specialty restaurants every day. I have mixed feelings about the quality of entertainment and length of shows. Going to a theater for a 45 minute show leaves me wanting more. 60-75 minutes should be a minimum. I was not impressed by the paid shows in the Carousel theater. But I was impressed by the quality of the solo performers (a singer and a comedian stood out on this trip) on the main stage. However, what annoyed me most may not have been MSC's ability to influence - going thru customs in Miami, where everyone had to get off the ship before returning to the ship. This has been handled better on other cruise lines at other ports, as it took 30 minutes out of my day when NCL ported in Portland, ME before returning to NYC; instead of 4 hours when MSC ported in Miami before its return to NYC. MSC does give good value for money spent. But then do enough things "wrong" that make me prefer sailing on Princess and NCL on similar routes.

I was concerned about realizing it had two adjoining doors, so really not for a solo traveller, but for a traveller with others who wants their own room. This compared to the studio on NCL full of similar people taking the space away from true solo travellers, but that’s a different issues. I usually simply sleep, and change occasionally during the day, in my room so the size isn’t my issues comparing the videos about the solo cabins with this style bed, vs non connecting which seem to have ‘real’ beds, the usefulness of the space. Now I’ve camped a lot so can make do with much smaller spaces, but don’t want to, even for the price I’m paying, which still isn’t cheep.

Some of the Virtuosa singles are much better, so worth checking what you’re in. My solo cabin on there before had a full size bed, and was a nice cabin design!

I was waiting for this video buddy....as you know I had a completely different solo studio with a full size bed, these are located in the midship inside....these ones are DEFINITELY family addon cabins that they've decided to utilise and make a quick buck from.

We (family of 5), had one of these and the adjoining one shortly after Meraviglia first sailed. They were sold as Super Family cabins. The set up next door doesn’t work either as there is a single bed that makes the adjoining door impossible to open. Clearly a design flaw.

I want to do some cruises so I hope I can get better accommodation at good prices. I have never sailed before and would like to do what you are doing but it sounds like an organising nightmare. Thanks Fraser. As a matter of principle, I never sail or look at sailing in so called "solo" cabins. The hype about being cheaper is almost always just " marketing" I have found them to be much more expensive than looking for last minute deals in a standard cabin &, at least on NCL ships, the rooms are claustrophobic- you have to get into bed from the end as there is not enough room to move around the bed- I could not sail in them at any price & prefer to book last minute. I have sailed with MSC many times- always in a standard cabin at often, very competitive pricing.. Thanks so much for the heads up! PS I would love to emulate what you are doing but so far, found it way to difficult to organise..Good luck with your goal!

Some good points here - solo cabins can often be pricey as they usually operate on a ‘supply and demand’ basis, so the more rooms that sell, the more expensive they become. Hi Fraser, Thanks for sharing the link on our MSC page though the link photo is missing, I agree with you that it should not be sold as a single person cabin unless it is half the price of an Inside cabin. The Meraviglia class is not our favourite having sailed on this one and Virtuosa and apart from the World Europa we have sailed on all their classes of ships. Our Aurea Suite which was on the front Port side on Meraviglia also suffered from poor design ideas in the living space with regard to the size of the desktop area being far too small considering the length of wall it was on, also the door to the bedroom was in the wrong place making access to the side of the bed awkward, those were the two main stand out features in that cabin. It does appear that either MSC failed to spot the issue of the wardrobe and bed in your cabin or like many issues with them they just did not care. The best Aurea cabin we have had was a Suite on the back of Seaside overlooking the Aft pool, now those had plenty of thought put into them with regards space.

That suite you mention overlooking the aft sounds absolutely stunning! I bet you could open your wardrobe in there… Ha!

I'd struggle with that bed. The metal bar around the edge makes it uncomfortable to sit on the side of the bed. I'd have to upgrade to a dearer cabin of one was available. Its deffo not fit for purpose if the wardrobe and draws can't be accessed 24/7.

I had one of those studio solo cabins (10252) on Meraviglia in 2019 and I loved it but when my sofa when made up it was a single bed and the head of it was below the virtual screen. Yes it was the smallest cabin I have had in all my 42 cruises but I had everything in it so I was happy. It looks like they may have changed the type of sofa bed they used back then as mine was nothing like yours.

The studio cabin is in the middle of 2 large family Oceanview cabins . It’s great for extra space and bathroom for a large family or a family with an extra adult traveling for privacy. It was only like 200 more to move an adult from the big room to the studio and that is worth that extra bathroom.

What a shame. I had actually been looking at one of these cabins as a serious choice, well I can see that it really wouldn't work well for me either. Not sure how MSC could reconfigure the room going further to make these more comfortable, or even if it is a consideration for them. We had the same type of cabin with a balcony on this ship. Was totally annoyed and ship was completely full so we were stuck like Chuck! Came home and demanded compensation, MSC honored the request and gave a full refund to use as a FCC (Future Cruise Credit).

I stayed in a Studio on the Meraviglia in 2020. It was not one of the family suit/conversion. I loved the room, even if the bed situation was the worst part due to it being a single bed and me being 6'7, but it did give the room more space. I had no issue with my studio interior, but have heard that those family suite single studios were bad

If it was just a standard single bed, I think the room would be just fine for a solo. Sofa beds just aren’t comfortable and then not being able to access your closet or use your desk when the bed is made would be a deal breaker for me.

I dont mind these too much when MSC sell them with zero single supplement. Seen people travel on these for 14 nights for less that £1200/$1500 with the drinks package included... and the sofa beds are pretty dam comfortable as well

I had a solo interior cabin on Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas and the thing I missed the most was having a couch to lounge on.

I’ve been wondering about any potential lounging in cabin. I don’t do much. I did more when I got an inexpensive upgrade to a balcony, felt I needed to use it more, but when I had an inside, chesterfield was more where I dropped my bag.

You do get what you pay for. But honestly I think that's actually a decent I think if you made enough of a sink they might give you a mattress pad or something to make the bed more comfortable. But you get a sitting area and a nice open area that expense of the bed I'll see you not in there that long. But it's true you get what you pay for

I had the same cabin on MSC Meraviglia but in the aft....It was the worse interior room experience also with all of the cruises I have taken and I was not expecting to be sleeping on a sofa bed and you couldn't even open up the closet when it was made into a bed. Never again... I've been on Meravigila again but kept away from this type of cabin.

It would depend on the cruise and the price. I don't spend much time in my cabin normally but that one is a closet. I wouldn't be happy stuck in there. One more negative about MSC.

Depending on the worker, nope. There would be two in a room that size. I’ve seen them in the modern ships, and my dad worked on an older one…without air conditioning.

Guess what, Fraser, now that you've shown this, the answer is never, ever ! Stayed in all types of cabins from MSC from insides to balconies to YC deluxe suites, and for me, some floor space is king ! That room with the double sofa bed down hasn't any floor space ! Next rejection point for me in adjoining cabin doors ! Just no ! 😮😦😬

Yeah, I’ve never seen such a tight room before - seemed mad - where do I put my suitcase?! Also, the adjoining factor on BOTH sides is something I’ve never seen before - I could hear every word of my neighbours conversation - very odd!!

OMG - what were MSC thinking! Why have the sofa at all, it's useless who would want to just sit in there. A single (twin) fixed bed would be so much better maybe with large drawers and luggage storage underneath - something like the Hub hotels have.

Totally agree - I love Hub rooms for London stays - that’s exactly what they should be modelling against. I guess the sofa is for when the room is booked to use as an extra room if it’s a family, but still mad!

I have always heard very bad things about MSC. I have not booked them for that reason. Sounds like MSC is deceptive. Some say it is worse than Carnival.

Not really - I still paid more than 1 person in an inside cabin as part of a couple, so this room still had a solo supplement 🤦🏻‍♂️

So you paid the cheapest price possible and got the worst room? Not ideal I agree but MSC are a good value cruise line generally, and it only cost you £150 to upgrade hardly breaking the bank. Have a good time anyway beats the rat race here. However as we speak just waiting for the taxi to 101 to do Euribia :)

The Studio Balcony is identical except there's a balcony. These cabins were clearly intended to be combined into a family suite because *obviously* no one would ever be interested in sailing entirely on their own... I do want to try MSC eventually but in Aurea or Yacht Club. I'm too old for sofa beds!

Ahh, I haven’t seen the solo balconies, but amazing to hear it’s the sand. P&O in the U.K. offer small solo rooms on their bigger ships, but they use a single bed so it works well!

I have a studio balcony booked for an 18 day on the Euribia next year. I’ve seen the sofa made up as a bed without being pulled out, so I’m planning on asking my steward to do that instead and leave it in that configuration (unless I get an upgrade in the meantime 😊)

You shouldn't have to sleep on a sofabed. That's terrible. If you are sleeping over at a friend's house for a night then it would be okay. But on a cruise that won't have been cheap I think it is appalling and I would complain at guest services. I bet the photos of this grade of cabin don't show this particular one. Clearly mis-sold/mispresented to you by MSC.

I'll be honest, I don't see much wrong with it. The worst thing for me personally is that it's an inside cabin, as the lack of a window bothers me. I did it once, never again. But other than that, it's got a bed, it's got a bathroom, it's got space for your clothes. What more do you need

If the mattress were to be a memory foam mattress, it might not be that uncomfortable... i don't think functionally it's possible to go back to sofa mode though...

I would have walked out immediately. False representation [not as advertised]. I would hotfoot it down to Reception if I were you and kick up an almighty fuss. But knowing MSC Customer service as I do ..... don't hold your breath for a positive outcome. The whole thing is disgraceful, at the very least you should get a massive discount. U are way too high maintenance. Yes, it's not the best lay out. However, MSC is the ONLY cruise line giving solo travelers a good discount on U.S. savings. So quit the whining and get over it. U are the only one in the cabin, so just go and have a good time.😮
