I remember being down there for the 2000 Daytona 500. My dad and I left early, partly because it was a snooze-fest, and also because I ended up getting sick during our trip. It was a shame really because we were both die hard Earnhardt fans, and me being 8-years-old, was excited to see Earnhardt's Taz car running up front... that didn't happen lol. It's a shame the Busch Series race the day before was much more action-packed: had two cars roll over, a few pileups, watching the young (at the time) guys like Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Casey Atwood, and Adam Petty running up front. At least my dad and I didn't go to the Daytona 500 the following year...

@AlanMuccioli
@AlanMuccioli 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, yeah, 2008 Brickyard 400. The race that KILLED NASCAR at the Brickyard. I remember it like it was yesterday : tire failures plagued the whole weekend, so NASCAR decided competition cautions were mandated every few laps. And much like how the rest of the weekend had gone, it was an absolute mess. Every single caution for the most part was a tire failure. You couldn't go 5 laps before the tires fell off and if you somehow managed 6+ laps? BOOM! tire explodes, day over. Oh, and Jimmie Johnson somehow won that debacle. After that race, NASCAR at Indy was scared forever, couple the 2008 tire debacle with the horrible racing at Indy in a stock car, the CART/Indy merger, and the recession that hit America, and you have the recipe for *I DON'T WANT NASCAR AT THIS TRACK ANYMORE!* If Penske didn't buy the raceway? I'm pretty sure Indy would've been gone after the 2020 season.

Although this was probably the most boring Daytona 500, I would say that the 1994 Speedweeks was the worst in terms of atmosphere. The deaths of Neil Bonnet and Rodney Orr within days of each other, concerns over safety, concerns over tyres (the safety of Hoosier tyres specifically as they were in a tyre war with Goodyear) and generally heavy hearts about the losses of life that weekend (the last time there were 2 driver fatalities in one weekend was in the 1950's)

@@pedrooliveiraoliveirasimoe5478 Definitely Pocono. I was considering using that for my comment, but I chose Kentucky mainly because it's my home track. Also, if you want a track that has produced crappy racing, you'd have to have Homestead-Miami Speedway on there somewhere. The only decent Homestead race I can think of is 2011. You can also make a point for Phoenix, if you don't include 2012 and 2016.

2013 wasn't that great but at least the last 50 laps had things shake up and we got a good battle between Brad & Jimmie for the lead and some side by side racing, plus a scramble to the finish . The 2000 500 had that for only the first few laps and for a few odd laps at the end before everything shuffled back to how it had been for much of the day. To make matters worse, they didn't even make drastic changes until after the Pepsi 400. They still had another two races (one at Dega and the Pepsi 400) with a similar package as that.

Jeff Gordon had an oil line leak. He would re-enter the race a few laps later and finish a dismal 34th place. 2000 wasn't the worst Daytona 500 ever but it was certainly in the Top Five worst. 1972 for instance...AJ Foyt would lead 167 of 200 laps and win by over a lap. Third place was like six laps back. Or 1974 or 1975, Richard Petty would win by nearly one lap. There's worse for sure.

@@RealSprooseMoose I'm referring to across the board. Not just superspeedways. This year's package has definitely improved racing at alot of tracks, but seeing that Dale was against restrictor plates, he probably would've hated what Nascar did in order to get the racing where it is. Went to a race at Charlotte in the early 90's. Ernie Irvan 'won' every practice, won the pole, ran off and left the field at the start, and won the race by half a lap. It's one of the favorite races I ever attended though, because of the final 20 lap duel for 2nd between Earnhardt and Martin. Not every race is a good one, and trying to create closer competition many times causes more problems than it solves.
