Lennox Lewis in my opinion is the most disrespected great heavyweight we've seen, Larry Holmes being a close second. Great job, once again with providing the back story of both fighters to add context to what we saw in these two fights, and beyond.
@The_Hitcher_862 жыл бұрын
'Prime' Tyson was pre-Douglas Tyson which means pre-Feb 1990 Tyson. Well, Lewis turned pro in June 89 and although he had 7 fights in that 7 month period, by the time Tyson lost in Japan, Lewis was still fightin in leisure centres; untelevised bouts for which he was probably paid about 10 thousand a go. I’d be fascinated to know where a fledgling heavy who was still 7 fights from competing for his first title of any sort got those millions to pay the world heavyweight champion (Tyson) to avoid him!!! Back in 1996, Lewis was on the comeback trail following his shock KO defeat to Oliver McCall, which cost him his WBC heavyweight title. McCall had since lost the belt to Frank Bruno who was then knocked out by Tyson. At this point, Lewis was in line for a shot at his old crown and took legal action to force his opportunity. The New Jersey Supreme Court blocked Tyson’s plan to fight WBA champion Bruce Seldon, insisting that he must first face Lewis As a result, the two camps worked out a deal which saw the Brit receive a payment of $4million to allow Tyson vs Seldon to take place. Ultimately Tyson stopped Seldon in one round, claimed the WBA belt and then vacated the WBC, which Lewis won back in his rematch with McCall. Eventually, when the pair did meet in 2002, Lewis dominated and KOd Tyson. Lennox Lewis was the one everyone wanted to avoid at all cost. He was the the guy they all ducked be it through crooked ranking bodies or promoters protecting their fighters.

Great comment take, right on the money but Larry holmes's number one just cuz of the Muhammad Ali stuff.. is by far the most underrated every way champ that jab was just something to behold best I've ever seen set up everything and that boy was tough granite chin he would not go down he had it all he was a true heavyweight champ and Lennox was it too but he got more credit than homes Lennox was a bigger household name he seemed like a fighter without a country I think that's what hurt him the most and then finally Britain kind of embraced him.. even though he was Canadian: kind of.

The upset loss to Oliver McCall is a prime example of why an excellent trainer will make a fighter the best possible version of themselves compared to an average trainer. Noticing such a tiny detail like the rear hand dropping just slightly whenever Lennox jabbed speaks of an insanely high boxing IQ, but to capitalize on it you also need an excellent fighter who has the ability to take advantage of that opening. A trainer and a fighter like that are a deadly combination.

Holyfield was disqualified in the Olympics for hitting after the break; not for simply hitting his opponents nose. (Interestingly, although he was the overwhelming favorite, the guy he hit was Kevin Barry…who went on to coach/manage David Tua and Joseph Parker)
@theephraimite2 жыл бұрын
You seem to have a habit of taking things too literally. The phrase of “hitting on the nose” is based on what a coach instructed Holyfield as a kid his first time stepping in a ring for training. Of course the late hit on Kevin was illegal, nothing to do with punching on the nose. The narrator is sorta being poetic with the phrase.

@@oddjobtriumph1635 If you don't know that he fought Michael Spinks, then maybe you should just be quiet. He fought and beat Michael Spinks who was on par with Larry Holmes, if not better than Larry Holmes. Both are Hall of Famers, and Larry Holmes is at least a top 10 great. Mike Tyson when he was at his best was destructive, the overwhelming majority of his fights ended in him knocking out his opponents. There is something to be said about his high KO ratio, when you are not just in the ring cruising to get a decision, but really showing the difference between between two fighters. He didn't just beat people, he made them seem irrelevant. In his prime, he really was on that level of Michael Spinks and Larry Holmes, if not better. The only person who beat pre-prison Tyson was Buster Douglas. Holyfield and Lewis fought post-prison Mike Tyson. Lewis and Tyson fought when they were 36 years old. That really says nothing about what would've happened if Mike was in his prime.

He didn't duck Lewis. Lewis was greedy: "Rock Newman, Bowe's manager, made two offers to Lewis. The first would have guaranteed Lewis $3 million, while giving Bowe 90% of the purse and Lewis 10%. The second offer was for Lewis to refuse the WBC title, have an interim fight in the United States for $2.5 million, and then fight Bowe for $9 million or a percentage to be negotiated. Frank Maloney, the manager of Lewis, rejected both offers and countered with his own proposal: a 75-25 percent split of the purse. Newman turned it down. Maloney later had a change of heart and agreed to the first offer, but Newman told him he was too late. Newman said a deal for Bowe to defend the title against an opponent other than Lewis was imminent."

@brimcilroy90022 жыл бұрын
Yes your right as different fighters at the same weight class due to styles and genetic makeup peak et different times, Mike tyson explosive up an at em awesome attack at all costs with his short height but tremendously quick and powerful upper body strength which enabled him to be be a little bit freak of nature sort as his style and and body structure gave him the speed of middleweight but with the power of a heavyweight which gave him a combination of frightening attack style but all this would mean be a style that would peak earlier than many other boxing styles as speed and explosive energy would only be at a peak for maybe 4or5yrs possibly whereas with lennox Lewis,s more laid back and less explosive style was never going peak early as Lewis,s style was more like a maturing wine so overall if we could of had both of them in their absolute primes in the same year the fight would be like Mike being the 100 metre spring King and lennox being a long distance expert and it would be a fight where it would be an absolute 50/50 shout as either one could take the other one out albeit different styles.
