You know how many tcg players didn’t even understand how mandatory effect priority shifting worked until they played masterduel? Hell some (probably most) of them still don’t understand. Masterduel players don’t need a judge to handle issues due to lack of game knowledge but the tcg does. You sound silly. Its the same game just automated. And arguably better because metas wont be defined by the inability to get a particular card that konami decided to only print x amount of copies of. Where you dont have to sell your left nut (of exodia) to get an important card for a particular strategy that wont even cost that much like 2 formats from now. There are problems with masterduel but people who exclusively play the tcg that feel superior for sone strange reason, wouldn’t know them.

Communities often function off of shared experience and I feel the YGO experience is too wide for its own good. "Liking Yu-Gi-Oh" could mean "I topped at the recent YCS" or "I have a Dark Magician somewhere in my attic". Some people like collecting the pretty cards, some people binge watch different seasons of the anime, and some people unironically play Flower Cardians. On a more serious note, as someone purely on the Master Duel side of things, I _do_ think its a very vocal minority, as most online negativity tends to be.

I recently had an interaction at a card shop where player asked me why would I ever want to play master duel? I explained that I work a lot, or I don't always carry a deck around. Master Duel (and for a long time for me, Duel Links) is great way to play the game without sinking too much time into it. I've learned combos, rules, and tested decks all while taking the train. Generally, the fact that there are robust fully featured digital versions of the game has made this game more accessible to me.

"You play Yugioh? How dare you betray us, the people who play Yugioh???" Yeah, it's kind of a silly thing to create divisions over. Unfortunately, there will always be people who try to make things into an "us vs. them" scenario. Personally I would prefer to play games in person with physical cards, but unfortunately I live pretty far away from any store. So I build decks according to the TCG banlist and play them on Master Duel despite the "different" format. If I like a deck enough, I even buy all the cards physically anyway! After all, I'm a collector too and that's not something you can really do (at least, not in a way that's meaningful to me) on Master Duel. There are strengths and weaknesses to every way to play, just let people have fun.
@eddiegloria9671 Жыл бұрын
I wonder what the secondary market might have to do with this divide. Imagine a player with the money to spend on expensive, game-winning cards, that let them be mediocre at the game, but win at the tournament level. They go to Master Duel, where people can craft cards and not hunt down hard copies, now there's a more even playing field. And so maybe some players that are SEEN as "good" because of their ability to spend extra cash are now having that reality challenged digitally. and many of the players that are otherwise struggling IRL but have that fairness in MD feel like that makes MD more "valid"....?

This is so disingenuous. You can test on dB lots of good tcg players do all cards are free there. Maxxc not legal and best of 3. This are the issues TCG players don't like the Maxxc mini game or that you can just lose game 1 to variance in tcg this happens you can recover in master duel you just lose. This 2 issues not the fake one of I can spend more money than my opponent and I'll stomp them. A LOT of the tribalist toxicity stems form the different formats and banlists imo. Like you said I've seen a lot of shitting on the OCG and it's players recently, and the MD hate is an extension of that since MD's banlist is way more similar to OCG It's one of the reasons why I wish Konami would just bite the bullet and unify the banlists at this point. It's already dumb enough that it makes getting MD players into the TCG more difficult since the formats are so wildly different, but it also just exacerbates dumb tribalism cause of minor bs like which format has Curious legal

That's why i was realy happy to get master duel on steam to get more involved in my favorite card game. hey Paul, great video actually personally, I just started playing Yu-Gi-Oh once again like like barely 3 weeks ago. I just picked it up randomly. I was looking up your guises videos on KZbin all the time I used to play as a kid but then I just started playing Yugi and and everyone used to tell me like oh it’s gonna be so complicated all the stuff but really like what I did was like. I just picked up like a dark magician deck something I’m familiar with from like the old met up and then I just saw how it improved and how it interacted with the other met in the world and then I slowly am absorbing all these new matters now and I’m understanding how to counter Pleij and I’m even winning matches at my locals with a dark magician deck, just by being patient and knowing when to use the right hand traps and honestly I use Master Duel to practice. I don’t really see the issue at least here in Seattle. Nobody makes a big deal about that. Actually they encourage it because most people are homebodies here and then when we do meet up, we all have really cool doors, but we’re aware like it’s different rules. That’s like that doesn’t really change it. Just you have to make small changes to your deck. That’s it personally none for me almost but yeah, thanks for the video. I really feel great after watching this

When Rush Duels came to DL, a small Speed-Rush division was unintentionally introduced. I enjoy both formats equally and want both to succeed. You bring up great points! I also don't like how TCG players thump their chests about their win in Worlds, conveniently forgetting they they only have 3/13 championship wins overall. It seems kind of overcompensating. Frankly, at this point, I think there may be a slight element of racism and/or projecting personal frustrations of Masterduel.

as a ocg player who both play master duel and physical paper deck, i ENJOY both different platforms. Even though master duel is also part of TCG area, I never disrespect TCG and TCG player. Rather i always been curious about learning their strategy , deck building idea and more thorough master duel cuz there is no limitation on what you can do in master duel platform. Instead of judging players their skills based on what platforms/decks they are using, we should think twice before making any statement/opinions cuz there might be reasons for it. And just being open- mind toward both platforms and player’s choice and try to understand each other,,,its just so frustrate to see these negativity statement around the community.

I just love the game. I prefer to play in person. I love the human interaction. However, I can’t always afford to take a long bus ride to my local shop, play, and take that long bus ride back on a Sunday afternoon when I still would need half the afternoon to get ready for work the next day. Looking at it that way, I just boot up Duel Links and play how I feel like it.

I might not be the audience for this video, but I grew up on the anime from Duel Monsters up to Zexal and played the DS era games. The game seemed so fun till I saw how fast and complicated the TCG can be and it intimidated me for the longest time. Didn’t really give the game a shot again till Duel Links and Master Duel came out and I’m so glad I did. I’m still very much a casual, but thank you for acknowledging that it’s valid to enjoy the game through those mediums. Duel Links especially

Most communities have very toxic elements and factions to them and Yugioh is no exception. I enjoy Master Duel for the convenience and to try out some decks, I play Duel Links mainly for the Rush Duel aspect now as I find it to be pretty fun. I have mostly branched to other games due to how Yugioh has evolved, it has been feeling a bit stagnant as of late. People need to chill out and let people play the game the way they want, I have seen a bit of toxic behaviour from players but for the most part the groups and communities I have played with have been pretty good. Got my fair share of complaints about the game like useless support cards for fun decks or most decks cheating out op cards and the overall generic power cards that belong to an archetype, but getting mad over someone enjoying a different way to play seems pointless and stupid.

I wonder how much of this toxicity in part comes from the OCG/TCG divide. Different card pools, ban lists and printing policies is a great way to build up animosity between groups. So there was already a precedence for tribalism in the YGO fandom.

you didn't mention this, but for me, getting to play YuGiO in a ycs event would literally be impossible for me. Konami doesn't make cards that are in print and in braille, and because I am completely blind, reading cards would not be possible and brailling cards would also be against any standard of the rules. As a result, I don't own any physical cards at all because I know I could never read them, and I only play Master Duel because I along with the blind community found a way to indirectly mod the game so we can capture text from the game to translate it so our screen reader software can actually read it. Withithout this mod, we could never play Master Duel as Konami has done absolutely nothing to make Master Duel or any YuGiOh product accessible to the blind.

Wow. I had no idea. Neither the existence of a blind yugioh community nor the lack of support for them in the TCG/OCG. This would be a great video discussion should you ever decide to upload. I'd take a listen and I have no doubt it would go viral.

I've only ever played digitally. I have a card shop near me, but because of work I'm on a nocturnal sleep schedule. They hold locals in the relatively early morning, square in the center of when I'd be asleep on Saturday, which is not a night I can really go to bed early enough for. So despite my wanting to attend, I've never been able to make it. I have a deck and the desire, but it just hasn't worked out. I wouldn't even call myself a regular online player either- I haven't even booted Master Duel in 3 months, and it's been a little over a month for Duel Links too. Good games (ones with lots of back-and-forth, close ones) get me hyped enough to wear me out, and bad games (where I get rolled with zero counterplay for one reason or another) really get me frustrated. So more often than not, with my like Tier 5 deck, I end up playing 1-4 games before signing off, if that. I'd consider myself an okay player, and I keep current with the anime, but it's rough for me to find the motivation to actually play a lot of the time.

I've been in an on/off relationship with YuGiOh since my childhood, but in the past 10 years i never got to play face-to-face with someone, so i always had to resort to "digital" YuGiOh. To settle once and for all the debate of what format is best to play on the PC, i'm gonna go with *Power of Chaos: Joey the Passion* :) You have a 2004 game with all the nostalgia, the annoying Joey speeches, and you can play with a friend via LAN(or use a VPN) On the topic of this video, i am just glad that a lot of people can enjoy this amazing game, no matter what format they play. I think you said the key word for me “convenience” when it comes to playing MD. It’s just something I can log into and duel my friends or other people from the comfort of my home. Or if im out and got some spare time I can just get my phone out and get a duel in. Plus it keeps up with all of the important stuff in a duel like the effects and I can read each card as it’s being played. I just don’t think the TCG style is for me. I don’t really care to buy cards and go out to duel. And then trying to remember everything going on in front of me would honestly be too overwhelming for me.

My coworkers an I play the TCG. One coworker plays master duel as well. And he gets increasingly aggressive with us over master duel. To him, we are inferior players who shouldn't actually play since we don't play meta style decks at all. We are super casual players in the TCG. He also really hates that I play duel links. Like, I can duel 3 or 4 times and have fun on my phone while they do one duel with paper. We are all just trying to have fun but the harassment happens

I’m not a die hard yugioh player, I’ve dabbled here and there with the tcg not too much tho and my main way to consume yugioh is through master duel, it’s slightly discouraging when someone like me tries to reach out to a tcg player when I have a genuine question cuz I’d love to be more invested in the tcg but I just end up being alienated for playing master duel or as if my questions comes from some sort of arrogant ignorance. Which is the main reason why I never go to card shops and my only yugioh consumption is by playing master duel and just having structure deck duels with my wife

I do believe both sides want what is best for the game, or their 'perception' as to what is the best for the game. The differences in perception at every level of play comes definitely from a love of the game, and one that changes on too many aspects too frequently. I think it is good that the TCG and Digital are separate entities, and even one who has played both ends as paper, until I could no longer financially support it and moved to Master Duel, I believe they should stay as such. But I don't disbelieve in the co-existence of their communities. We love the card game for our own reasons. Some love the solitaire-esque play of turbo fast decks that can flood the board with win conditions. Some love comboing decks that play upon the opponent's mistakes or create openings in their opponent's combos. Some enjoy reliving the older days when Yugioh was new and fresh, taking those turns where mechanics such as set, pass, and flip monster effects were the name of the game. It is indeed a vocal minority that has an issue, and even though I solely am Master Duel these days, I still wish for the continued success and prosperity of the TCG, as well as the surge of Master Duel's success. You move, duelist. Let's all get to the end together.

4:18 I'm part of a Yugioh discord who recently got a newer player, but all they do is deckbuild and they barely play the game. When they do play, they make some major misplays you'd expect a newer player to make, and get scared of handtraps like Nibiru so they end on a board that does literally nothing in under 5 summons We keep telling him to play Master Duel to learn, but because it's a different format, he just acts like he won't learn anything from it at all It gets infuriating, because you're right, no matter what format the gameplay is still the same, just with different card pools Can't help those who refuse to help themselves I guess Should also mention the same guy refuses to playtest online and would prefer to playtest at locals. This is especially bad because he's a budget player and we've seen him buy cards he thinks would be good for his decks (like Iris Swordsoul in Swordsoul or Branded) despite what we tell him

I tend to prefer playing the physical game, MD is just kind of boring because more often than not I run into all the same cards. Or my opponent takes forever to set up their board and if I can somehow manage to break it they're just gone. Or if they mess up a play they quit. Yes, you can probably be dealing with that in the competitive scene too but as a casual, being used to my opponent letting me play it out, MD is just super frustrating. My opponent quits, I don't feel satisfied, I don't feel like I won. Especially when it still could have gone either way. Fun in this game for me is struggling a little, maybe coming up with a new strategy or play that I never thought of before, and MD usually doesn't give you the chance. You play a card, your opponent is just like "f this, I'm out". That's not fun.

I prefer that aspect of master duel. If the duel isn't working, you can jump out and back in again until you get one that works. If this were in person, I'd have to drive to a place, spend money to get there and entry, and be obligated to sit through BO3, multiple rounds of Swiss, and you can't really get out of it. You have to play through it. That to me is a worse experience.
@Charley-ju6yg Жыл бұрын
Yeah the divide is pretty weird, I just don't get the need to hate something. Even if you don't like the format one place provides, shouldn't it be a good thing just out of the fact that the option exists? While there are certain parts of both master duel and the TCG I don't agree with or like, I just find it amusing that there are different options that can give different experiences, sort of like an always available custom format/event at locals. And while I absolutely prefer going out and play face to face with people, as someone who is in the middle of my studies, I just don't always have the time or schedule for that, so having an online option that I can just hop on from home and get a quick match is great! It also works well for testing decks without paying money, before building them IRL, which makes the game slightly more budget friendly as you won't buy useless cards as often because they looked great at first glance. Sure there were online options before, but those weren't official from Konami. It's like the saying goes; hate the game not the player. I can understand not liking master duel in and of itself, hell who knows how hard people have been pushing for Maxx C to get hit at this point, but it doesn't make sense to make an issue out of it with the community, and crack down on poeple just for using an option that's available to them. And the same goes the other way around. Personally I absolutely despise duel links, but I would never give someone shit for playing it. If anything I'm greatful it exists even if I will never give it another chance, simply because it brought new options to the game and was able to introduce new players into yugioh.

The yugioh community is one of the best community when it comes to invalidating other people's opinions and Thoughts on any matter that pertains to yugioh that they disagree with. In just another comment section. I was arguing with a guy about y. Maxx c and ash is needed at least at limited to 1 in master duel because people can make unbreakable boards in 1 turn. And his response was basically just get better at the game. And honestly, they wouldn't needed so many bands if they would stop printing so many cards with three or four or 5 different effects

i have a strong preference in Digital card games because i play many many MANY different TCGs and i dont have the money to chase relevancy in every game. While i have a few physical decks the amount of actual play they see is minimal because Life will always get in the way. Digital card games increase the consistency in which a game is played there for increasing the fan base as a whole by being more convenient to just "jump into" rather then walking into a card shop and just buying stuff till you get things ya like.

Frankly, I can see the MD arguments. When TCG has staples going for over a hundred and OCG super rares turn into secret rares in the TCG It honestly feels like I'm being scammed whenever I buy TCG product. I know the prices and the availability is better in the OCG and then there's MD which while digital, it allows you to actually get the cards without the need to spend hundreds. It feels like I'm being a sucker whenever I buy product or look into buying a staple or have interest in a a deck, which turns out to be strong in the meta so the prices skyrocket. Way I see it, the entire TCG vs MD conversation exists only because MD has become a real alternative to playing the TCG. And the OCG trash talking comes from an inferiority complex over the OCG or people somehow convincing themselves that somehow decide that Maxx C existing in the OCG means that the OCG is invalid in some way. It's all such nonsense. And thats why Duel Links players aren't hated on or talked about. That game is so different that TCG only players don't feel it can be a threat and be a valid alternative to playing the TCG. But MD can so these comments appear
