Back in the day, like the late 80's, and early 90's, from what I seen as a kid and a teenager, if you was black, you definitely had a 2 parent working household to live there!!! Exactly, It could be said the mayor is subpar? It could also be said the whole lot of them (trustees included) are subpar. To be an outsider & understand what is ailing them. I think it comes down to the inability to conduct a functional meeting. A typical village uses Robert's rules of order. This is not being adhered to in the Village of Dolton (just sit down & watch a recent meeting) By design the trustees are not powerless to keep the village on the straight & narrow. On the other side of the coin, The mayor is not powerless to keep the trustees on the straight & narrow. The history of chaotic meetings is what is causing the downward spiral of dysfunction. The village meetings have an established "chair person". The current chair person I believe is the mayor (correct me if I'm wrong). The mayor who is the acting "chair person" can lose the ability to act as chair by a 2/3's vote. If the mayor refuses to attend a meeting, the trustees should elect a new "chair person" among themselves, once the new chair person is elected they can proceed. The mayor is not powerless at that point but has lost the power of the chair. Once losing the power of the chair, next comes the power of the purse. The mayor having lost the chair could by vote of the trustees take the power of the purse. The mayor doesn't go away in this scenario. The mayor is elected by the citizen voters & (short of a recall election) remains until the mayor's term is over. The by-laws established when the village was incorporated will detail the various checks & balances & include remedies for many of the short comings that may arise. These elected & appointed public officials need only to act as full grown adults & the Village of Dolton will go on to strive and prosper. Should these public officials continue to act like children, they will be doing it at their own peril & shame on them if they do.

One of the few things not her fault might be a judgment for spoilation in a chase that predates her time there. But because of her lavish lifestyle, the judgment, which was recently upheld at $33.5 million (and for which insurance only covers $10.5M of it) should be her downfall as township properties will likely be taken as collateral.

Too be fair, Dolton has been f--ked up since Mayor Shaw took office! I grew up there, my family lived there since the 1920's! The White citizens were not racist, they voted to integrate the High School in 1970? So I do not want to listen to any BS or finger pointing! Once the demographics of the village shifted to 25% Black we got Shaw as Mayor. And he completely undid City Hall practices, that were perfectly productive and in budget for over 100 years! It's not just the current knucklehead Mayor, it's the knucklehead vote by color not by qualified Black citizens!

But to be honest it was great, because half of the basketball team was from Phoenix,il. Talking Quinn Buckner man, Thornridge won Illinois State High School Championships back to back! In fact that team is among the top 10 greatest High School Basketball teams in America.

I grew up and lived in Thornton Township for 50 years before moving to Indiana. During the 1960s I hung out in Riverdale, Dolton, Harvey, Markham, and Harvey. These villages were thriving and offered so much to the residents. There were malls, great Park Districts and schools. In the 70s I taught school in Riverdale, Harvey, and HazelCrest. Beginning in the 80s and 90s, I witnessed the decline of all of these villages. Corruption and crime has destroyed these towns. One parent told me that she moved out of the South side of Chicago to get away from the crime, but it didn’t take long for the criminal element in Chicago followed her into towns like Dolton/Riverdale. Today, I feel like crying seeing what has happened to these communities. Henyard is only one of the corrupt office holders to scam the residents and cause the decline of once thriving villages.

About the best narration on corruption I have ever heard. Even worse so much of the residential area is relatively intact and could easily be a great affordable (for Illinois-Chicago metro) area to live in which is well illustrated in the video. The thorough relentless detail should make everyone more alert to how dangerous corruption is. I have very fortunately never had to live in an area like this but I have experienced very close calls where this kind of behavior came close to derailing my career development. Honesty is the best policy is not just a cliche. Stunning, thoughtful and sobering video.

I went to Thornton High School. I had friends from Dolton and Riverdale. I grew up in Harvey and our town changed to Black. Their was white flight and we moved to South Holland. My friends didn't understand but they learned when their towns turned Black.

Narrator doesnt remember that the CHA decided to demolish the Robert Taylor homes and other failed low income housing projects. Those residents were relocated to the south suburbs of Dolton, Riverdale, Calumet City, and Burnham. That also relocared the gang operations south. Yall wanted it.....yall got it !

Hugh that's probably a part of it, but not entirely what happened. I worked a lot in South Shore, and Chatham in the South side of Chicago. In the 70's I was shocked what the black families were paying for rent? Plus the neighborhoods were dangerous, schools were horrible and they had to park on city streets that were never plowed in the winter? Back then their rents were $375 for 1 bedroom, albeit large apartment in a 3 story courtyard building? You could rent a 2 bedroom apartment in a brand new building with a enclosed parking space in Dolton along Greenwood road, or 142nd street for $250 @ month! Safe neighborhood, excellent schools, integrated schools at that! That to me was the main factor in the demographic shift in Dolton? It was the smart thing to do for Southside families wanting to better themselves

Mayor Daley had a hand in all of that. CHA was to have rebuilt the public housing and relocated the residents. Mayor Daley wanted to keep that 500 million to go towards beautifying and gentrifying Chicago. So they just gave the residents housing vouchers. Bad move.

Great video, very well done. I lived my first 10 years in Dolton. My family moved to nearby South Holland in 1967. I was happy to spot the former Dolton Theater that you drove past multiple times, including around 17:25. That’s where I went with my older sister and her friends to see A Hard Day’s Night. The girls were in the throes of Beatlemania, and I was astonished at all the big girls screaming at a movie.

That whole town is F-'d up. Never seen the unprofessionalism like it before in my life. Had an appointment with the Public Works director (at HIS request) and OMFG the dog and pony show that ensued while in his office. Policemen coming into his office with requests for gas to be put in their vehicles, begging for new tires, begging for village CC's to get essential items, PW director laughing at them and looking up at me for response, swearing and shouting back and forth, just utter mahem. If you work for this town, pray that your paycheck clears the bank. AWFUL.

I certainly have a few memories of trying at my grandma’s and some of the plazas there, but I haven’t a clue where to find any of it now, if any of it still exists. Dolton Illinoise has few trees along their commercial corridors. This is an indicator of low development standards. It is very obvious that livability has been low on their priority list for decades even when times were good. I hope all the long time business owners are satisfied now that they have extracted all the value from their community leaving nothing but dead strip malls in their wake. Now Dolton is just another place to avoid but then again, it was never built to last.

Used to live there. Was nice to see a few long time businesses still there. As for recreation, you missed the 2 private lakes. And does the city still have the Exercise/pool building on Greenwood just south of Sibley?
