During one week of October 1970, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw had just about the worst week possible. In the span of seven days, he was fined twice by head coach Chuck Noll for two separate incidents, was publicly criticized by his coach, then played an abysmal game against the Oakland Raiders where he got injured and benched and put up career-worst numbers. This is the story of Terry Bradshaw's rookie season, and the worst part of a disastrous campaign.

In today's NFL there is probably no way Bradshaw makes it to 1974 when he eventually took over the team and led them to a Super Bowl. But to start that year he was on the bench. Nobody would have though he was a future Hall of Fame QB at that point in his career.

Stuff like this should be a reminder to some teams that they should stick with their draft picks sometimes even if they aren't great out of the gate. Changing from the college game where most of the players will end up like working in construction or in an office to the NFL where it is straight up the best of the best of the best is stupidly hard and yet some guys get like half a dozen games before being dropped forever even though there's a chance they could have become a star if they were given the time to grow

I remember reading a book, "One brick shy of a load" or something like that, about that season, written by a local sportswriter, that documented that his offensive teammates strongly preferred Terry Hanratty as the starter, bad as Hanratty was, due to Bradshaw's very poor playbook knowledge and maddening indecisiveness, especially in the huddle. I always hearken back to that when I hear his obnoxious and insufferable boasting about how he called his own plays. Franco left, Franco right, throw to Swann, throw to Stallworth. I remain unconvinced as to how much genius that required.

Terry bradshaw may have had the worst rookie season for a qb in nfl history
@bubbafug00gle51
@bubbafug00gle51 2 жыл бұрын
Na, his stats look worse than they were because of when he played. Off the top of my head, Ryan Leaf had 2 TD's and 15 picks and had a lower YP/A... in a much friendlier offensive environment. Alex Smith had 1 TD and 11 INTs and a lower YP/A as well in an even better QB environment. At least since the merger, the Smith season is probably the worst of any QB who had a lot of attempts. If you adjust for TDs and picks he was 47% worse than average that year, Leaf was 39% and Bradshaw 31%. Bradshaw also added some value buy running for like 230 yards (and his life).

This shows how impatient people are today. Tua gets shit on for going 6-3 with 1870yds 11TD to 5INTs, and 3 rushing TDs in his rookie year. After a stunted camp, and coming off a major injury. This is how a hall of fame QB played in his rookie season. People need to calm down and be more patient. Josh Allen looked worse than Tua in his rookie campaign. Now he's considered a top QB going into this season. End of rant haha

No, I agree 100%. Elway had a 7 to 14 td/int ratio as a rookie. But he finished the season much better than he started. Len Dawson was an NFL afterthought, then went to the AFL, and ended up in the Hall of Fame . And you're right about Josh Allen; people were burying him all of his rookie season. Look at him now.

Bradshaw was still making rookie mistakes and getting benched even in year six. If not for that great talent steelers drafted and surrounded him with bradshaw goes down as another bust of a top pick of the draft '70's qb with an arm. Somewhere in between plunkett who got a late career revival and archie manning who was lost on lousy saints teams never having a winning season or seeing the playoffs. Noll didn't hesitate to yank Bradshaw out when making bone head plays or calling plays for him.

He completed 31 of 50 passes for 348 yards, one TD and 2 Int.'s His TD pass was a 61 yarder to the seldom used RB Steve Davis.

I noticed in these clips that Terry was running for his life for the first three years of his career. When the offensive line got better his problems began to become less evident. But he was always around fifty percent as a passer and threw a lot of interceptions. In 1973 the great Steel Curtain Defense was just about completed and they bailed out Terry's mistakes the majority of the time. But as Terry became more relaxed and trusted Coach Noll he became the quarterback the he is famous for. But I'll always believe Roger Staubach, Ken Stabler, Bert Jones, Fran Tarkenton, and Bob Griese were better at their peaks than Terry. If Roger Staubach is quarterbacking the Steelers they probably are NFL Champs in 73 and 76 as well.

@tygrkhat4087
@tygrkhat4087 2 жыл бұрын
0.0 technically; but "not applicable" would be better, as you need to throw a pass to get a passer rating. There was at least one game in the last 75 years of the NFL with no passes by one team. The second meeting of the Eagles and Browns in the 1950 season, the Browns only attempted one pass, but it was called back on a penalty.

the old adgae, its not how you start its how you finish...if you start great, you fizzle out...if you start poor, you end great!....bradshaw looked bad in his first year, but he tried and never quit...but, when the offense line improved, bradshaw really excelled....when griese, staubach, stabler, tarketon came up and played with their teams, the offensive lines for the doplhins, cowboys, raiders, and vikings were already established...when the steelers offensive line got better players and came toghtther as a cohesive unit, then bradshaw really excelled and came into his own...
