The fact that he showed up UNANNOUNCED to see this woman whose life he DESTROYED and she just acted like it was fine?????? This is literally a horror movie. The whole “girl who’s told she’s infertile magically becomes pregnant” storyline always seems so insensitive to me. I understand it can happen in real life, but there are many cases where it doesn’t happen, and it can be so devastating to people who want kids. By throwing infertility in as a plot point and then taking it away randomly, it trivializes it and makes it seem like it’s a fun, quirky thing and not a real thing many people go through.
@ladykynthos
@ladykynthos 8 ай бұрын
This! Because the underlaying message there is that without magically getting pregnant they can't be complete and, please just no. There are even people who can get pregnant and don't want to have children. Not *every* single form of happiness and sense of fulfilment in life comes with a baby, and I kinda get "iT's fIcTion", but when that's what always happens with this things it just gets annoying very fast. Why can't I have a character who can't have kids still have a beautiful romance and a wonderful life for once?
@iclynnx
@iclynnx 8 ай бұрын
This is done in Warrior Cats too, a book series for kids and teens. A cat named Squirrelflight is told she is infertile by a ghost cat named Yellowfang, while her sister is pregnant. The sister can't reveal she had kittens because it was against the code (their law) to have them as a healer, a medicine cat, plus it was from a forbidden and failed romance. So Squirrelflight was in a way pressured to adopt her sister's kittens, but later on, she has kittens of her own with her mate. So this Yellowfang, who was a fan favourite as a living cat in the first set of books from the series, lied about infertility. In a kids book. I don't want to consider Yellowfang in the later series canon, I loved her character, but she became less of a grumpy grandma and more of a rude grandma.

THIS! I would like your comment a 1000 times if I could. I got lucky and have one child but because of my uterus (bicornuate) and cervix (its also shaped abnormal yay me!) paired with a 0 negative blood type I can't get pregnant without a huge risk of late term miscarriage. The women in my family who share my uterus type have tried to have a larger family despite our uterus shape and have had multiple late term miscarriages that have broken them. In some cases they had a second surviving child but in most they didn't. When you are faced with this news you have to take a step back and look at your very tough situation. Movies like this trivialize these harsh truths making it seem like "lol if they just try everything will work out" they don't show the heartbreak or pain of those in those situations.

What this movie decided to do with Natalie's character is certified gross. Her pulling emotional labor as his therapist and assigning herself half blame for him sending a sex tape to friends for a bet (and wanting to start a fling with the guy who ruined her life doing that) is rage-inducing.

The simple fact that she was willing to talk with him. Like, the guy sleeps with her (and I don't know if he was her first but I guess since the movie tells us she was like Tessa at first, sweet and innocent, she was a virgin at the time) for a bet (which is already gross in itself), sends the nudes to his friends (asshole) who then publish them, causing her to lose her possibility to enter the school of her dreams and had to move in a different country just to start over. Like, why the hell hasn't she called some friends or even payed someone to beat the shit out of Hardin and put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life? Why does he still have his c***? Cause he deserves it.

I don’t like the “happily ever after thing” either 😂 They should’ve had Tessa and Hardin get back together and then Natalie do something in revenge for having her pictures leaked and Hardin dies just to show that you need to be careful of the SHITTY child like choices you make. Then have Tessa write a book on Hardins life and sell it. Hardin was selfish and wanted to impress his friends, which is what a lot of people do now and days, my ex was the same way as Hardin so it would’ve been nice to see Hardin get a serious punishment despite growing into a better person after SO long.

It can also be a fantasy. Many women fantasise about being treated a certain way if they 'get the guy' in the end but they don't want it IRL. They know RL can't be manipulated like their fantasies and because it is one they can also gloss over how terribly they'd feel if really treated that way. They are in total control. It's a thing as old as time and can come from the minds of perfectly reasonable women. (Most yaoi with the reluctant/dominant male lovers are all written by women and it's women who read them). We shouldn't read too much into it. Though fantasies of this nature don't look good portrayed as real life.

Someone else that I watch brought up something from BoJack Horseman (not watched the show myself, maybe one day I will) and that there was a scene in which BoJack had seriously hurt a friend when they really needed them. Upon the learning the friend has cancer, he apologizes to him for the incident, but the friend says, "I don't accept your apology." BoJack repeats it, surprised he's not getting the typical response, and the friend repeats, "I don't accept your apology. You hurt me when I really needed you and you don't get to just say you're sorry and expect everything to be better. You have to live with the consequences of your actions." And that is what this whole After series ultimately should've ended on. I'm so fucking tired of characters doing awful things to someone and an apology getting to wipe it all away. The woman who's life was ruined in this movie by having those images shared? Yeah, that's a case of no amount of apologies ever making it better and it really is disheartening to not see an asshole like Hardin (fuck, I learned that cretin's name) not get the shit in his face that he deserves. A person like that does not deserve forgiveness. So, as we know the 4th after movie was supposed to be the last one but then they decided otherwise. So, at that point the ending had already been filmed. Josephine Langford had a contract of only four movies so she decided against returning for a fifth one and that's why this time its more about hardin himself, i guess rather than tessa and hardin. Most of tessa screentime is really only flashbacks and they just attached the fourth movie ending here instead so the conclusion seems even more ridiculous than it would have been had tessa been in the movie.

Soo What did we learn with all this amount of literally-nothing Series? : Hardin really has a talent for ruining the lives of naively ignorant (or just stupid) girls but for some reason they still want us to see him as a misunderstood Bad Boy.

It’s sickening that they try to victim blame Natalie “You didn’t force me to do anything” (or they let her gaslight herself?) and then like… try to force us to sympathize with Hardin as if he’s not a complete garbage human being who’s ruined so many peoples lives.

@@christina93d5 The way you worded it and the context of the comment (+ the fact that you've made countless other comments defending Hardin, a fictional character, with your whole self) makes it seem like you were trying to justify it because the woman wasn't careful, not like you were offering safety advice. Yes people should be more cautious when having one night stands and not allow sketchy behavior but you don't respond to a statement about the bad things someone did with "well the victim did x y and z." It's like responding to a statement about someone getting beat up on the street with "well they should've carried pepper spray." Maybe, but the point is that there shouldn't be people doing bad things and making people fear for their safety to begin with.

The worst is the movies are just as bad as the books. I remember reading them and forgetting why Tessa and walking red flag were in a fight again because there were so many of them. Also the author fully projected herself in the books as Tessa (or at least that's what I noticed) which is crazy unhealthy.

@@vanilla4983 Assuming they're basing this on the book Before, the reviews on Amazon suggest it'll be a pretty thinly plotted movie. Apparently very little of it gives us any new background on him, and most of it is just showing us things we already know about but from his perspective. But one of the reviews refers to Hardin as someone who's almost always a gentleman but who can occasionally be rude. So, uh...maybe he doesn't do anything too bad in this one?
