I completly agree with all of those . I would like to add that huge screen to command all functions of the car including the air conditioning. It's just cheaper for the car manufacturers to buy a few million identical screens than to engineer and manufacture dozens and dozens of different buttons, switches, etc. for all their car models. It sucks for the drivers, but hey - who cares? The companies will earn more.

Have you noticed a marked increase in the number of times the car in front starts wandering between the verge and the white line? Not just the once, it appears to go on for a mile or so. They're either fiddling with their touch screen dash, in the middle of a text conversation or half-cut. I'd be interested to see the stats on the number of times the police have pulled over these clowns, thinking it's the latter.

Another thing with the mirror /camera thing. When you look in a mirror, you can move your eyes / head / body around when looking in the mirror and you see different things and things just out of sight. You don't get taht with a fixed camera. For some reason the handles didn't pop out at the end of an 8 hour training day, 40 miles from the nearest town. We loaned them a phone to call a technician and they had to wait 2 hours in their soaking wet gear for the tech to get into their car so they could drive home. Lack of door handles is really an unacceptable feature to be pushing when its getting people stranded in bear country.

What also annoys me is that the big german brands lost their consistency in naming their models. For example Mercedes always had the A B C ... S class, the SUV version added "GL" to the name, like GLA GLB ... GLS. But now with their new electric models its a big mess. For example EQS is a sedan and the SUV counterpart is called "EQS SUV" but then the EQC is an SUV and the upcoming sedan version will be called the "EQC SEDAN" witch doesn't make much sense. Good video, but I disagree with you on plug in hybrids. Yes, you’re right if the majority of your driving is long trips. But if most of your travel is to work and back, and you can make that entire drive on the EV, then a PHEV is ideal. My wife drives the Kia Sorento PHEV, and in 3,000 miles, we’ve only had to fill up with gas twice because she uses EV only going to and coming back from work. For our use case, getting the slightly worse mileage on longer trips (even though 36mpg is still very good for a large SUV and that’s what we get on long trips), is well worth it, because the rest of the time we rarely ever need to fill up.

Agree with Tamir here. It seems that given the state of charging infrastructure now and in the near future, plus the state of most on-board charging systems, the PHEV is actually the best choice for a lot of people right now. Not sure why he's complaining about 36 mpg, when the ICE model Sorento gets 29 mpg on the highway. I mean, if the argument is that the premium you pay for a PHEV or hybrid vehicle is not worth the fuel savings then...okay, EVs and PHEV lose this battle every time. Except we know that people are not strictly practical when they make vehicle purchases. I mean, look at what they buy! But for some reason, folks who love to hate on hybrids and EVs suddenly find religion and get all kinds of practical when explaining why it's foolish to buy an EV or PHEV or Hybrid.

Hybrids are a bust, especially PHEVs. As you say yourself, you barely use the engine most of the time. As Matt pointed out you're carrying around the extra weight of the ICE components when driving in EV mode and carrying around the EV components when driving in ICE mode. Makes more sense to get a pure BEV which will have all the range you will ever need and be WAY cheaper to fuel and more efficient because it isn't carrying around dead weight by design.
@dremul

@@trevorberridge6079 Compare the weight of an electric with a PHEV. Example: BMW i4 has 2200kg, the hybrid has 1800kg, because the battery is way smaller. Being by myself on a very wide bridge with perfect visibility I got slightly to my left in the right bend to adjust for the speed and heavy tall vehicle offroady suspension ready for the apex and the damn thin steered me to the side of the bridge on the dip. My brain told me I aquaplaned, my rear end slid out and I'm going to flip my car on a fricking bridge going 100 kph. I am not afraid to admit I almost made my underwear brown and saw my life before my eyes ... and the damn thing just leveled out and kept on jeeping. If I wasn't on the damn bridge I would have pulled over then and there and took a screwdriver to the fricking lane button and a hammer to the bloody camera !!! That was the most useless near death experience I ever had. On another occasion the thing was trying to steer me into a bridge head because of a poorly painted solid line and I had to muscle it away from certain death. It's not annoying ... it's dangerous ☠️

Now I have been taught to indicate only when appropriate in my advanced driving course, so driving down a dual carriageway at 70mph I wanted to move into the right hand lane to turn right at the next roundabout. There was no other car in sight... so I tried to change lanes, but without the indicator on, lane assist fought me, until I used enough force on the steering wheel to overcome it. Then, once I defeated lane assist it pretty-much steered me into the central reservation! I had a very lucky escape for sure!

hybrids are the option with the least amount of pollution we humans have at this very moment. and besides, there aren't enough materials in the world to supply everybody with an EV... so unless these progressives wana join Elon to outer space and start digging for materials needed in batteries, hybrid is the only solution for the mass market. Battery technology have reached a cap for now. Electric in cities and ICE for long distance high way cruising. We just don't have a better option at this moment, going all el or all ice are both too extremes. Hybrid is the balance. What I noticed recently was that many cars have a raising beltline and a falling roofline (the highest point is usually above the driver's head). I guess that's fine for aerodynamics and gives a "coupé line", but it also means restricted headroom for those in the rear and the side windows become smaller and smaller towards the rear. And it's not just one manufacturer, pretty much everyone does it nowadays; I wonder whether it's aerodynamic requirement or just a trend?
@jesflynn4048
@jesflynn4048 Жыл бұрын
aero's?: partially. The raised 'beltline' does not improve the drag coefficient; a progressively tapered ('boat-tailed' or tear-drop shaped) body does. The key here is to look at the car from the rear quarter: when the bodywork (whether glass, metal or plastic irrelevant) 'stops' , usually with some form of blunt rear end (i.e. appears squarely sawn-off), what is the total cross-sectional area? It's this that adds a large proportion of the total vehicle drag. As cars get ever larger, those csa's are grow commensurately. The 'raising beltline' is purely a styling gimmick to give a testosterone boost for boys, a harking-back to the wedgie supercars of the 70's/80's. it actually increases drag coefficient and fuel consumption. On the upside, more metal/less glass = stiffer/lighter body (and increased probability of child vomit)...

One other issue with the replacement of mirrors with screens fed by digital cameras is how much your eyes have to change focus every time you look in them. When you use a mirror, your eyes don't focus on the mirror, but on the object reflected in it, which is much further away. You are effectively focussing at a similar distance as when you're looking straight ahead. When you use a screen, your eyes have to focus on the surface of that screen to see the image clearly, then readjust focus once you look back to the road. Not only is there a slight delay as your eyes adjust, anyone who wears glasses to drive may find that the screen appears blurred, because their glasses are set up to correct their eyes only when focussing at distance.

@Ismalith

Mirror Screens are great, the problem is that they are done poorly. The car industry is and always has been extremely slow and anti improvement and innovation. So instead of looking at this feature and think about what it can do, can improve or how it might be done correctly, the car industry looks at it and wonders, how can we take this new feature and make it exactly like the old thing. And so you get the problem that all the issues of the old thing stay while you also get new issues that this new thing has. For example, why only have one camera on a stick? Those cameras cost less than a damn dollar, pound or euro, in production, put one in the place where the mirror used to be, directly not on a stupid standing out stick, one in the top roof and one in the rear bumper and then make a big picture of what is behind you. And then put the merged picture of all those cameras on your speedometer and side screen when you use the turning signal. You could also mark objects in your mirror dependent on how relevant they are and add some data, like to a car that comes from behind, the seconds until it is directly behind you and it's speed. But nah just put it on a stupid stick for no god-damn reason and make it as limited as the old mirrors where because new things are scary and car buyers are whiny "the past was better" little babies.

A couple more things wrong with electrifying everything: * Electric mirrors for example use screens and cameras which both use electricity to function which eats into your battery life/range. So it is with every other electronic thing. Now, sure, the amount it wastes on a pointless thing is very small compared to anything actually driving the car BUT it still does eat into it which defeats the purpose. *Electric mirrors use screens which burn out in time. Being used in the sun, actually being in a car on a hot summer day and being constantly used- it will happen. And the replacement will be oh so expensive because it will probably mean the replacement of the whole dash at the dealership. Which in turn means A WHOLE LOT of screens on something like a honda E or MB eqs. *Electric mirrors use SCREENS (i really hate these) Which, if not bright enough, are unusable in direct sunlight just like your phone is on a bright sunny day. *Swiping on buttons and touching them without real feedback (like a phones vibration for example) takes your eyes off the road to look at what you're doing even on a steering wheel. Which does more harm than good. Basically we are told to not use our phones while driving and it is legally prohibited in some countries but: "I am sorry officer, my whole car is basically a phone, i cannot drive it without looking at a screen." Good Lord bring back the good old simple old great old cars.

can't win the argument on replacement cost - manufacturers couldn't give a stuff, it's just more future revenue being locked in. I haven't seen a car with these camera mirrors yet, but what surprise me from the video is that they don't seem to solve the blind spot. Like...WTF? If you're gonna 'improve' something, address a real issue. Do they have adaptive brightness to stop the blinding effect of those gawdawful modern headlights (not sure if they're laser matrix or whatever) - but the ones that seem to always be on full beam...or maybe that's just here in Victoria (Australia) cos we don't have to roadworthy/MOT the vehicle every year (nuts!) so they go out of alignment or something. @@davelloyd- The cameras I've used (Audi e-tron) are better (than my eye using mirrors) to avoid blinding from traffic behind. Visibility is also far better in heavy rain/snow, where the side windows themselves tend to give very bad visibility through a regular mirror. The field of view for the camera is wider than what is shown on the screen, and blind spot objects will be notified by a blinking red frame around the image. The field shown on the screen adapts to the situation, e.g. giving a very wide image in city driving, "tilted" down when reversing, or high zoom on highways to be able to look really far back. I fully agree on the issue that moving your head, will not change what you see - although that has not caused me any issues.

Your vision of these screens is constantly blurred, because your cornea has to adjust between far sight through the windshield and near sight on the tiny screen. Plug-in hybrids are a cheaper alternative to having an electric car with a huge battery. Their batteries are still enough for daily use, which makes up most of the mileage most people do, but they are not range-limited like an urban electric car of equivalent price. Heck, even the most expensive electric cars can feel somewhat limited in range in comparison with a combustion engine car. So they do offer the advantages of both systems. Of course, they are also a compromise but everything is a compromise, isn't it?

@@corleth2868 That's reasonable, but when you're looking at a 3 row SUV, currently, outside of the insanely expensive Rivian, which you may get sometime in 2025, there are no EV options - The Model Y is too small and very expensive, the Model X is insanely expensive and not really large enough either. So you're stuck with a Kia Sorento PHEV (or Toyota equivalent) or an ICE vehicle. In that scenario, if most of your driving is done to commute to work, and that commute is within the EV range, its a complete no-brainer. We've only filled up our Sorento twice in 3,000 miles and it's 2nd tank is still almost full. For smaller cars, its a different story. So it really depends on the person's use case.

The biggest issue I find with digital mirrors (I have a digital rearview mirror in my Lotus because the view out the rear is so limited) is the focal distance. If you have 20/20 vision without needing glasses, you'd be fine. If not, then you might have some difficulty focusing on what's in the "mirror." With a real mirror, your eyes focus at the actual distance to the object (the light travels that whole distance to your eyes), but with a digital, you're focusing at the distance between your eyes and the screen. That can be an issue. With my glasses on, which help me focus on distant objects, I have trouble focusing on what's on the screeen.

Range in practice is around 40/50/60km depending on driving style in electric mode. So most journeys are covered on electric. Our holiday is about 1000/1300km's away so then the petrol engine is still superior to an electric car. And we don't have to worry about draining the battery cause it still has a petrol tank. I´m with you! I really don´t understand what's the problem. My wife has PHEV and it´s fantastic. She drives around 50km daily and all of that she gets with full EV. And when we need to make a longer trip it gives us around 50-60km with fully electric and after that it becomes a "normal" hybrid. I mean do people think these cars turn in to just petrol cars after that? They still have the max power available and they still prioritize electric power just like any other hybrid. So what is the problem with that? I feel that hybrid car are now obsolete and offer no real benefit compared to Plug-in cars. My wife car has now just about 11000km and the average consumption is 4.7l/100km. Not bad for a mid size SUV with all wheel drive and just over 270hp. Oh and here where we live the infrastructure for EV cars in not there yet and distances are somewhat long so 450km range is not enough when you add highway speeds and well below -10C in winter.

I agree with all of this, and as someone who's worked in the automotive field in a variety of jobs, the biggest thing that concerns me; we're pumping out cars that no one will buy second hand. It may seem like an old adage, but it's true: the more stuff on your car, the more stuff there is to break. People say they're being environmentally friendly by buying an EV....but what they're buying is 4,000-6,500 pounds of car that will be out of date with a dead battery pack in 10 years. Battery packs will be so expensive as to not warrant replacing. Like all batteries, old ones will diminish and newer vehicles will come out with 3-5x the range and the older vehicles will be instantly pointless. Same goes for all the extra cameras, electric motors (again, in places you don't need them), screens, consoles, and touch-sensitive buttons. Same goes for cars with overly expensive suspension (magnetic, air ride, adjustable, etc.). All these motors and components are eye-wateringly expensive to replace. Who's going to buy a car with a motorized door handle if it's $600+ to fix or replace it? I've worked as an insurance adjuster as well as a car salesman...and the cost of 'new tech' is crazy. People are totalling cars faster than ever, because components can be insanely expensive to replace (particularly if they're proprietary from the manufacturer). There is going to be a wasteland of overly complex, over-motorized, over-tech'ed out useless cars in the next 10-20 years.

100% wrong about batteries. Teslas easily make a half million KM till they get at around 60% capacity, after which they can be used for stationary storage for years. I think they miss a trick too, it would be really easy to split the screen and have standard blindspot shown there. It just occured to me as well that on my bike I now have rear radar. I still check behond me when manouvring etc. but it's so good I don't do nearly as many standard rear obs, which is the whole point, more time facing forward.
