I wanna give a shoutout to solrock in Emerald. If you delay your Meteor Falls Encounter until after you get waterfall, assuming you have a zubat, you get a 50/50 chance if getting a Bagon in the back of Meteor Falls. Unfortunately, the other 50% is Solrock
@pizzahutkidman88063 күн бұрын
This happened to me once and I was really disapointed. Solrock isn't like... useless, but it's competition is SALAMANCE AT THE ELITE FOUR. A elite four where psychic types struggle and in Emerald, there's an trainer with mutliple water/ice types and Wallace the champion! While one can sweep through the elite four with a linoone, so elite four ulity isn't super duper important assuming smart play, it's still always disapointing.
@RealEmar3 күн бұрын
Honestly both solerock/lunatore and zubat are kind of better than bagon. Getting a rock type with somewhat high special defense for a fire gym is a good deal and crobat if renerally reallly strong for the entire playthrough. Meanwhile bagon is kind ogfbad as the only place it can be really used is elite four when it evolves into salamance. Even then dragon type kind of sucks there as Glacia has ice beam on every team member, Phoebe has it on one of her duskulls(which is easy to forget). Drake himself has dragon types and since dragon is special and super effective both ways salamance cant really take a hit that well and his ability does not do anything. During champion fight he can do a lot as long as watch out for tentacool. All it has to offer is stats and ability which are good but not good in playthrough. It's the same problem as blaziken, good monster but when everything has EQ and water being a fire type starter does not benefit it in the slightest.
@swampert5643 күн бұрын
@@RealEmar Salamence has it's flaws but it's also such a monster that even if it only becomes accesible for the E4 it's still gonna tear through them even with Ice Beam spam against it. The real loss for Blaziken is that you don't get Mudkip who absolutely dominates the game (scary grass types? In Hoenn? In Gen 3? Ha).
@MrJcalvino3 күн бұрын
Salamence isn’t that good. No physical/special split in Gen 3 and quite some presence of Ice moves in the League.
@swampert5643 күн бұрын
@@MrJcalvino Yes it is. It's not quite the monster it will become once the physical/ special split happens but it's plenty strong as a mixed monster. The dude has base 110 Sp Atk (the same as Jolteon who is usually solid in Nuzlockes, the same as Blaziken for that matter, it's literally one of the highest Sp Atks that you can get in RSE for that matter.) and base 100 speed, it's not like it's actually weak. Return and Earthquake has you covered for it's sky high attack, Flamethrower and Dragon Claw for it's Sp Atk, possibly teach it Aerial Ace for Ludicolo if playing Emerald. It's not necessarily worth the trouble to get but it is 100% a good mon in RSE nuzlockes. You are mistaking something being not necessarily worth the effort as it being bad. It does poorly against Glacia but she is not and never has been especially threatening. There are so many ways to deal with Ice types. It's more a testament to there being plenty of solid encounters in RSE than anything that Mence isn't completely busted.

This is all fun and games but imagine you are nearby Rustboro, you've invested your single use, pickable Repel to skip your Route 116 encounter so you can score the Whismur dupe is Rusturf Tunnel. You come back to Route 116 thinking about the endless possibilities of Pokémon available... like the extremely solid, MVP, guaranteed Guts, Taillow... or even the illusive but Brawly-nuking Abra... man, even Ninjask (or Shedinja if you allow it 👀) would be cool, coming from Queen Basalt, Nincada, itself... In defense of Chatot in Platinum, while getting it in Route 222 is annoying, it can also very easily be Repel Manipulated. If you bring a 41 Pokemon and slap on a Repel, the only encounters that you should get is Electabuzz and Magneton during the day and morning. And during nighttime, if you get the Buizel dupe, you have a 100% chance of your encounter being Magneton. So, with this specific strategy, your Route 222 encounter should never be Chatot in Platinum.

Gen 3 Meowth defense: 1) there are no better mons on that route 2) pickup is pretty useful for the low cost of "just have it in ur party," and you rarely need all 6 slots for most of Kanto; berries are also decently useful and so are nuggets and rare candies. 3) it learns Cut and Flash, the former of which you need anyway to get through parts of the game. What's worse is when you're going on autopilot sorting through dupes and accidentslly kill your actual encounter. Or on a route you've been grinding on all day (because it's on hardware and you can't just hack the candies in without something like an Action Replay), a trainer sees you when they didn't before because they apparently only notice you during a specific part of the day and you've just wiped because your Quagsire and single Roselia with only a single low-PP offensive Grass move cannot match up to 3 slightly lower leveled Roselia and the trainer knows the switch when you Grasswhistle them because they have natural cure and you just lost at least a few dozen hours on the stupidest training accident because you did just wipe. Wugtrio is a serious enigma, being a convergent species i have no idea why it HAS the exact same stats as dugtrio and is worse in every possible way since it's move pool is more shallow then a puddle full of magikarps and has a completely useless set of abilities and while i don't do Nuzlocke's...i do think maybe 1 dishonorable mention in gen 9 would be Finizen since you do need to go out of your way to evolve it as it requires being in a union circle, so if that's not allowed to be done then you won't be able to evolve it at all into palafin who is a monster, also i think Shiinotic is another bad mon from gen 7, really slow with a terrible typing in grass/fairy that makes it vulnerable to a lot of types especially with poison (also it can get illuminate as an ability which does nothing but makes random encounters far more frequent and annoying)

Great vid, good to get some insight on what mons are truly burdens for all nuzlockers. Figured to bring some light to people who like some of the mons mentioned on this list (some not on the list mind you), I'd talk about some places where they are surprisingly okay! (please note that this is purely my own experience with the games and is limited to that scope) First one I have something to say about is Magcargo! In Colosseum, it's actually not horrible to pick situationally as your encounter in Pyrite Town. While I would say there's obvious opportunity cost going against mons like Misdreavus or Quagsire, if you're using Bayleef this mon is worth picking up. Why? For starters, it's one of two non-Quilava fire types in the game. And good luck trying to catch Entei against Dakim, a run ending trainer without Entei being caught in the plan. Slugma also starts with Flamethrower. A 90 base power Fire type STAB move coming off of 70 base Sp. Atk is nothing to scoff at in this power level. Even if it's other stats are garbage... You can also use this thing in Miror B's fight to pivot Croconaw out of Ludicolo's grass moves, and bait water for it to come back in while the other pokemon cleans (personally Mantine is my go-to for this fight, pre-Hypered to take advantage of 95% crit on Shadow Rush and Swift Swim). For utility, it also has Yawn, a more reliable way to put mons to sleep and catch shadows unlike Skiploom's Sleep Powder with a nasty 75% accuracy. Towards mid to late game, getting rock typing at 38 (8 levels from when you get it at 30) definitely helps with pivoting when using Meganium. it resists flying, poison, bug, ice, and fire, all of Meganium's Weaknesses. Meganium also resists the Water and Ground moves that make it cry itself to sleep at night. It also gets some great moves like Body Slam, Fire Blast, and Earthquake as either TMs or tutor moves, while Rock Slide comes at 43 if you delay evo or 48. While it's niche, I would say for a Meganium partner this is something you should consider picking up in Pyrite. Next one is Ariados in XD. Picking up the Spinarak at Cipher Lab is genuinely not a bad idea. If you're counting the six type specialists as separate encounters bc they are outside of the building and not using first encounter rules (Colo/XD are weird bc you have forced battles and that's how you catch mons), this mon is an option to consider. It gets Silver Powder as an item, and Signal Beam as a move. This hits hard relatively to what else you have access to once it has evolved into Ariados, and strong Bug STAB is genuinely very good in these games. Dig as coverage and Night Shade for whittling down Shadows reliably are both other tools that make this mon an interesting option over a Walrein with mediocre STAB options (and potential overlap with Vaporeon) or Yawning Swalot. You also have Sludge Bomb and Shadow Ball as available STAB or coverage. Would recommend giving it a try, even if it doesn't seem worth later on (personally I used it throughout my second playthrough) Next up is Carnivine in Pokemon Conquest of all things. Its ability Levitate comes into actual use, as it allows the mon to traverse any terrain with ease, ignore most field effects, and climb cliffs to move much more efficiently than your other units. Vine Whip also covers an entire 3 tile row in front of you, and can rack up a lot of damage if positioned correctly which Levitate lends itself to. It has great stats to back that up as well. It's very useful throughout early game, and I wouldn't say it's the worst utility option later on either. I'm glad Swanna and the monkeys were left off the actual list, but their bad rep isn't really well earned IMO. Swanna gets Surf, Dive, and Fly, and can pair that with Toxic (route 17 backtrack Surf TM) or Roost (level up)/Protect (Professor reward) to function as your HM user and a decent Toxic Staller if it needs to fight (Fly and Dive have synergy with racking up Toxic damage, as does Protect). Ducklett at least helps against Clay's Palpitoad and can revenge kill with access to Bubble Beam, Swanna also helps with Marshal. Though I would say that both trainers have a lot of Rock moves so you'll need to focus specific targets. They don't really struggle against any gym leader after you get them either. Completely free to just take at Drawbridge and manip a later encounter as well. The monkeys all are useful against the first BW gym, and get useful TMs for the other gyms like Rock Smash, Dig, Acrobatics, Shadow Claw, and others. Of course they're fully evolved by Burgh so everything but Simisage is useful there, who is instead a good pivot for Elesa's electric moves. I wouldn't say they're incredible or anything, but it's the best you're getting in Dreamyard bc who wants to try and roll for the shaking grass Musharna or waste it on an Audino after a rough gym fight without a monkey to help. B2W2 doesn't really have them available very often if at all, so not really worth talking about in those games. Obligatory line here about Contrary Superpower and Leaf Storm on Lurantis, but it's really not anything special without Ability Patches which you're just not realistically getting most of the time. Anyways hope this was somewhat uplifting for fans of these mons, if course if you think I'm wrong about something that's fair! Just personal experience, and sorry if you've seen me repeat myself ab any of these mons, I've talked about them before just bc I find niche ways pokemon can be useful somewhat interesting. Thanks!

Swanna's also handy since there are few Water types in Black and White. If you didn't get Panpour or your Outer Pinwheel Forest encounter wasn't Tympole, then Swanna's your next one. And with TMs being reusable it does make a decent Ice Beam user in emergencies. It certainly has its uses (it was a life saver in a couple runs for me), it just gets ragged on for being yet another Water/Flying type that isn't great compared to others. (Oh, and it's useful for a spare Water type in Black 2 and White 2, since unless you started with Oshawott or your Ranch encounter was Azurill or Psyduck then this is your next one... and right in time for the Ground Gym).

Really enjoy this video and the previous part. They're fun guides and get me to think a lot about different encounters. I would like to put forth some alternatives: Gen I: Ditto. Very few pokemon worth transforming into, the other Pokemon Mansion encounters are more useful for that point in the game, and it's a hard Pokemon to use Gen II: Corsola. Only place you can catch it is the same place as Staryu Gen III: Delcatty. What if we made Exploud but worse and in the same location, but twice as long to evolve one stage? Gen IV: honestly can't compete with Carnivine, but I'd put forth Cherrim as also outclassed by almost every other Grass type and an infinitely worse Roserade Gen V: Maractus. It eats up your Desert Resort encounter (every other one is somewhere from good to great), and isn't even a good answer for Clay. At least Beheeyem can deal with Plasma Grunts and Conkeldurr Gen VI: Pangoro. Hard to guarantee you'll get two Dark types to evolve it, and you're missing out on a potential Intimidate Scraggy via horde manipulations Gen IX: i was gonna say Tatsugiri where you're effectively playing as a Nasty Plot sweeper and miss out on Dondozo, but I can't argue with Wugtrio. Completely forgot about that poor sucker. Again, I really have enjoyed these companion pieces and getting your added insight to various nuzlocke Pokemon. Keep up the good work

I can think of two other pokemon not mentioned that are worthy of consideration - Skitty in Gen 3 and Maractus in Gen 5. With only a 1% encounter rate on the only route in the game it appears on, you're very unlucky if you get it, because you could have gotten an Abra or a Nincada (future Shedinja) there instead. Maractus again is for opportunity cost. While I think you're right that losing out on Litwick is worse, getting a Maractus in the desert resort means you didn't get a Sandile, Dwebble, Scrafty or Darumaka there, all of which are fantastic encounters.
@insulttothehumanrace3807Күн бұрын
Even Sigilyph is more handy than Maractus. And as he pointed out, if you're that worried about getting Elgyem you can just get your Litwick on the second floor (and it's still not a common encounter on the 3rd or 4th levels either). There's no skipping the chance of encountering Maractus.

Pidgey's only flying type level up move is Sky Attack, the best it gets from TM is the measly pre buff base 70 power Fly, and while stab gen 1 Hyper Beam is amazing and gen 1 Double Edge is fine (before ot was buffed from 100 hase power to 120 basepower), Pidgeot isn't gonna be getting much use out of it with how weak it is. At least Onix has the what if scenario of not encountering a Geodude or Rhyhorn, but there's like 14 normal types and not close to as many rock types in gen 1. And even if you don't want to invest TMs on Onix, which I agree with, you can send it out to wall and slowly widdle down a normal or electric type
@swampert5643 күн бұрын
Onix and Steelix really bum me out. I absolutely adore them aesthetically, Onix is wonderfully simple and Steelix is really cool but boy Onix sure is stanky and Steelix is rarely the best option. Poor guy could use several distinct major buffs. Your picks seem generally correct in my experience. It serms fair to not call out Male Combee because if someone is going for Vespiquen they've accepted that it's probably going to hurt them. Male Salandit is slightly less of an acceptable risk though. Spinda on Skarmory route is probably the all-time pick though.

Even mega steelix is pretty bad
@swampert5643 күн бұрын
@tomfrost2600 That one was a real burn for me. They managed to make Pidgeot and Beedrill significantly more gnarly with their Megas even if they were still pretty unimpressive in the grand scheme of things but they couldn't do anything even a little bit interesting with Mega Steelix. Steelix is probably in my top 10 favorite Mons from a design perspective in the entire series but gosh it's weak. It's gotta be one of the most notable examples of stats not fitting the idea. 30 foot long metal monster? Gotta be strong and tough but slow right? Nope, just big defense.
@Rikoyasha153 күн бұрын
Fr you see a giant rock you expect it to be strong but all it has going for it and good def and decent speed and just trash everything else and Bruno has like 2 of them. Like I'm disappointed it wasn't in the same league as like Lapras, Kangaskhan, Snorlax, or even Tauros who are soild single stage mon but Onix is so trash it's in the 1st gym and just a awful typing on top of it
@swampert5643 күн бұрын
@@Rikoyasha15 It's a riddle for the ages why Bruno didn't have Primeape and Poliwrath in Gen 1. It could have been an intentional gimmick for the Gen 1 Elite 4 that all of them use literally every fully evolved mon of there expertise (admitedly because several only have one family to work with at the time, god Gen 1 is jank) but Bruno just doesn't for no reason at all. Onix being garbage was always especially frustrating for me as a young kid playing Red version because the battle with Brock was really intense in the early anime. People like to make jokes about how Ash only won by cheating (fair) but that was a brutal match before the shenanigans.
@Naul68923 күн бұрын
Onix would be perfect for what it is if you took 80 points of its defense and spread them to its other stats. Imagine if it had like 55 HP, 70 ATK, 50 SpA & 60 SpD? It's be a pretty serviceable first stage.

I'd love to see any nuzlock with middle stage evolutions only.
@slashb7836Күн бұрын
I like this. Though I'm wondering about level caps. Many first Gyms' caps will leave you with only mid-stage coccoons and first Gyms are often notoriously anti-Bug. GSC stand out as the obvious easiest. Kadabra with Elemental punches is veey good just by itself. If strict about the first Gym, you at least have Jigglypuff in addition to your cocoon of version-exclusivity, and then Mareep and likely your starter evolve for Bugsy's cap. The Nidos are great for Whitney, and a well-trained Kadabra should easily be able to one-shot sweep Morty. I can see it so easily. It seems fun.

Whismer is actually kind of important in Treecko runs of Emerald as one of your only answers into Wattson's Magneton. Granted, you need to grind the Flamethrower TM, which sucks, but your other options are Geodude and Makuhita. You are guaranteed one of them, but can never get both unless you're using some kind of pinwheel clause, so make or break the backup check into Magneton is always worthwhile.

I think the only pick I have issue with are G-Stunfisk but it's not because I think it's particularly good. It's just difficult to justify any lost opportunity cost in those games because, by seeing encounters in the overworld, you have almost total control over what Pokemon you get. I bring this up because, like you said, no encounter is truly useless, which really makes opportunity cost the most important metric. In Gen 9 every encounter is visible in the overworld, so it's all equal. However, in Gen 8 there are still random encounters in grass, which makes it difficult to see which encounters have the most opportunity cost. On a precursory look, Milcery and G-Meowth on Route 4 stand out, along with Sandaconda on Route 6, and G-Ponyta in Glimwood. My personal choice would probably be G-Ponyta because I'm pretty sure every other encounter in Glimwood is more useful and unlike in other areas there are next to no overworld encounters (only the fixed Impidimp and Morgrem spawns).

Whilst I think that this is debatable, I'd like to put forward Male Combee as the Sinnoh champion of god-awful. Carnivine probably locks you out of better encounters, sure, but like you said, you kind of have to go out of your way to get it. Imagine waiting 6 hours for a chance at a Munchlax, Heracross, or at least a Wurmple that you can evolve early on for a decent Gardenia encounter (though you probably have it duped by the time you get to the first couple of honey trees anyway), and out pops a Male Combee. Like, this thing literally isn't worth anything. A Female would be fine, if not amazing, but a Male Combee is the biggest disappointment of an encounter I can think of. Add to that that in Platinum, it's the first pokemon in Group A, meaning there's a 70% chance for Group A to be picked, and then 40% of the time, it's a Combee. It's gender ratio is 87.5% male, too, so your chance at getting one is really, really high.
@slashb7836Күн бұрын
I have a "Combee Clause". I don't count mon like male Combee and Salandit as valid encounters unless they're part of the theme directly (such as first stage Bugs). Luckily for Honey Trees you can just save and reset in front of them. I also just legitimately do love Vespiquen, though
@omegastarmania31992 күн бұрын
Honorable mention in Gen 3: Geodude. Route 111 has those rocks that block you off to Lavaridge, and if you get unlucky/forget to repel up, you may be stuck with the rock instead of, like, Trapinch
@slashb7836Күн бұрын
You do have another chance in Mirage Tower. And Graveler does singlehandedly sweep Flannery pretty easily. Mostly falls off after Winona but still pretty reliably good against evil team mooks after, at which point you've probably got a Golem. But Hoenn's also not Geodude's home Gen, so it wouldn't have been eligible for this list anyway.

I was doing a White 2 nuzlocke one time, and I needed something useful against Elesa from Route 4. I was thinking to myself "with my luck, the first encounter will be a Minccino". Well, guess what happened: It was indeed a Minccino, I killed the Desert Resort encounter, and as well as the Yamask in Relic Castle. Obviously, I wanted to sacrifice it to Elesa, however, it ended up winning me the battle.
@insulttothehumanrace3807Күн бұрын
If you're doing White 2, you could have gotten the one in the Hidden Grotto on Route 5 (Bianca drags you there for the Hidden Grotto tutorial). The one you get there has its hidden ability Skill Link, which makes it an amazing party member for most of the game.
@ToaArcan2 күн бұрын
IMO Luxray is on enough routes in DP/Pt/BDSP that if you get a Rivalry one, it's worth it to just kill it and reroll on the next route. Weird thing to think about, but GarchompFJ might be my favourite "KZbinr's Evil Twin" bit just because he's not solely an antagonist or a strawman or a punchbag, sometimes he's just right and Flygon makes himself the unreasonable one. Keeps him fresh and entertaining instead of becoming annoying.

I know this is about the gen they are in, but I used Delibird to great effect in a wedlocke in Shield. That is pretty situational though and results may vary.

Carnivine is awful, but you're not gonna get him so it doesn't matter. in my opinion the worst Sinnoh encounter is a male Combee. Most honey tree encounters are pretty decent if not good, but this thing does absolutely nothing.

I think an interesting thing to do would be to look at the best and worst encounters for each GAME. Because while obviously bad mons are bad, some are worse in some games then in others and it often also depends on the other options you have. The worst encounter in Diamond/Pearl might not be the same as the worst encounter in Platinum for example.
@CobaltPizza2 күн бұрын
So the clear path forward is to making “Pokémon but I can only use the worse encounter from each route,” and as a palate cleanser you can do a best Pokémon run

I'd say I'm surprised Crabominable was left out given that in OG Sun and Moon you evolve him at the very end of the game, and while he's pretty good offensively he's terrible defensively and quite slow, but Crabrawler is actually really solid in the early stages of Alola. Also while very out of the way, you can get him almost immediately if you wanted in Paldea due to the open world nature of the region and a stupid high attack stat and Ice/Fighting combo that early on is stupid good. Glaceon would probably be better if you really wanted to do such a thing with getting an early Ice Stone but point stands.

Ya know what, Mr. Dr. FlygonHG, I have a post video question for you: If fate would deem it so in this theoretical, which of the big stinkers you listed in this video would you prefer to have as an encounter in a nuzlocke, assuming they're all in the dex for this scenario? And which would you avoid like the plague? Let's also assume you encounter these mons at the start of midgame around the early 20s with two or three badges collected, to give them a chance at a (likely temporary) team slot. Out of a group of the worst, there's still a best and worst among them, and I wanna here your choices for each spot and why.
