I'm 36 and have been skating for 20 or so years on and off. I think the biggest stereotype is that skating is "immature" and i should grow up. But I'm not into hunting, fishing, golf or whatever boring stuff people my age are supposed to be into

That shits for real men. Honestly they shouldn’t say shit to you but as a grown man riding a fucking skateboard, who are you to judge the man who goes out in the wild and provides food for his family? Golf is whatever but if you think hunting and fishing is boring that just means you’ve always been a pansy

I am a high school teacher and have been skating for over 16 years now. Still struggle to make people understand why I still do it. I think the biggest stereotype is the idea of “maturity” and “time wasting” which people can’t seem to comprehend. You are the man John! Keep killin ittttttt

I think there is this weird thing in our society where certain activities like skiing or golfing are looked at as more acceptable for adults to do than other hobbies like skateboarding and videogames for example which are looked down upon more. (However I think both are becoming way more accepted for adults to do than they used to be.) Also aside from being fun, skateboarding is a great way to get exercise, release stress, and socialize with other people. It's great for both your mental health and physical health with many benefits. So people saying it's a waste of time are probably either just judgy or think anything that does not bring monetary value is a waist of time which imo is a sad way to live life.

it's that combined with the fact that skateboarding isn't productive in the sense of making money. There's this super prevalent idea that only things that make money or that are for a clearly defined purpose that everyone understands (such as dating) are worth doing and that everything else is a waste of time.

Regarding the "we do illegal stuff and cops don't care" comment. I came to this video from a short about "lane splitting" on motorcycles. The person in the video was doing this in a state where it's illegal, and was told by a cop (I'm paraphrasing) "I don't care, just don't do it in front of me, cause you make me look like an idiot." Which is saying "Karens/Kens can't see me ignore your illegal actions." or in skater words, "I could care less that you hit that handrail, but the public expects me to bust you, so I have to, because it's technically against the law". All that is to say, cops would much rather you hit a handrail than a crack pipe, just don't do it right in front of them, cause then "expectations" get involved.

I’ve been skating off and on since I was 4, mostly from 10-14 and some in my mid 20s and now I’m 30 and I’ve skated more in the past year than I have my whole life. I have 2 children and I’m an HVAC service technician in Southern California. I’ve never been any of these stereotypes. I go to the skatepark 2-3 times a week and I take my 3 year old to the skate park and she’s rad on the board and only gunna get better. Fuck these stereotypes. I feel like my neighbors judge me for skating outside too even though they can see my success right in front of their faces.

Imo skaters are probably more appreciative of public infrastructure. Seeing hours of entertainment and endless possibilities in the most basic things like, a broken sidewalk, a handrail, stairs, hill, drainage ditch, ect. I know I carry a broom and trashbag with me when im street skating like what if there's trash in the way, dirt rocks, broken glass, ect. It's not like the city is gonna go around and sweep some sidewalk or ditch ya know?

3:55 I started skating in 89. I kinda felt like older guys did this as like a teaching thing without having to walk up to younger kids and start coaching them. Maybe things have changed. I also spent a summer with a bunch of kids that were better than me and improved a lot. Next summer I stayed with my mom and skated with a crew where I was the best and I learned basically nothing. I'd say the worse thing is when older/better skaters start mimicking your shitty skating.

Disrespectful of property- you didnt refute it you just reinforced it. Even your argument against it was the biggest strawman, you invented the worst case scenario in your head bro. What about just a regular companies property, or a small business... or what about the people that want their stairs and railings in their city/ town to just look nice. No problem with skating, but at the expense of other peoples property is just a dick move that many skaters shrug off

OCD/perfectionist, uneducated, and lazy. Also, to those who believe that skaters are Satanic because they don’t believe in God, should understand that those two are not the same, Satanism is a religion, not believing in God is Atheism. Lastly, unfortunately I do agree with the destruction of property stereotype, because if you skate street more likely than not, you are damaging property, that’s why cities build skateparks… but it’s really fun to skate something that is not meant to be skated, that’s why some see skating as an art form. BTW John, your skating is amazing, I wish I could do half the things you can, but that’s ok, considering I have skated in 16 years until recently, I’m happy with where I am at.

I think the new stereotype (somewhat earned) is being a karen. I remember when inline skating became a thing and all my skateboarder friends irrationally hated bladers for some reason. Now, skaters hate scooters, and they even try to police public parks that they somehow consider to be theirs. Over the years, skateboarders went from rebellious (slightly cringey) cool kids - that liked to say things like "skateboarding is not a crime" - to being cringey, dogmatic karens, who can't stand people that like things that they don't like. "Ugh, how dare you have fun on inline skates, that's not the thing I like." I used to skate a lot, but I've long since thrown my karen-plank away; "not skateboarding, is not a crime."

we took great pride that we were different than the people that- were bland and all made sure they dressed exactly the same and went along with the flow and let people tell them how they feel and what is and isnt "cool" but that was in a narrow minded very small hick ass city called dover delaware. everyone pretty much knew everyone and most of us couldnt have afforded to be one of them if we wanted to. by the time i moved to the woodlands tx, i thought we were pretty few and sort of exclusive excrpt that there was more people like me at my school then people that were not. jusat because i was always into trouble didnt mean that we all were and my uniqueness kind of faded and i started findingf other things more important. then we had a kid and nothing else was important anymore except taking care of her and that meant "growing up". which wasnt all that bad just different
