Front disk brake of my BMC Teammachine squealed loudly from day 1. Very embarrassing on group rides. Persisted despite cleaning the rotor several times with alcohol, deglazing the pads with sandpaper. Was about to change pads (one bike shop suggested changing the rotor). Then I saw the brake assembly was misaligned causing one pad to contact first and push the rotor to the other side upon braking. Realigned the brakes after loosening the mounting bolts. Presto - silence!
@Synthwave89
@Synthwave89 Жыл бұрын
I noticed this too!! My MTB squealed bad and noticed one pad hit the disk much earlier than the other, bending the disk away from center. I loosened the caliper, applied brakes which centered the caliper perfectly, then tightened caliper screws. Done. If pads are uneven it might not go as well, try flipping them and it might also help.

Gotta love when a channel like this puts out a Disc brake video and the "Rim brake defense force" comes out... If you don't have disc brakes, then enjoy your old QR bike with wheels and pads you have to replace and let the rest of us enjoy a bike that STOPS. And don't fool yourself; Set up and maintenance is no more strenuous than rim brakes. But the result is actually having brakes that work no matter the weather. Go figure.

Agreed. I only recently moved to disc and wouldn’t go back. I do still own a rim brake bike but last time I rode it I almost came to grief on a narrow steep descent when I met a car coming the other way. Had I been on my disc equipped bike I could have stopped no problem but on the rim brakes I needed to do some unexpected off-roading! Scary moment!

People seem to forget that rim brakes can also squeal. I think that maybe the whole caliper system needs to be re-thought. Afterall motorbike and car brakes squeal much less and the pads last much longer.

Brakes for motorised vehicles can be much heavier so that they last longer but in the cycling industry it sounds pretty impossible to successfully market a deliberately weighty option. Also, cars and motorbikes themselves are really loud, meaning there is a whole lot of noise that a brake can produce before anybody can even hear them over things like an engine.

@@archetypex65 what's the technical/ science asked to this, I wonder? If spongy brakes are due to small air bubbles in the system, then depressing the lever does what, puts the hydraulic system under pressure so the bubbles are less likely to travel up to the reservoir in the hoods (so be less likely to benefit from an open bleed (when you just open the oil insert at the hoods to let air bubbles come out with a syringe of fluid)?). Struggling to understand, but would like to!

If your discs squeal like mad, and you’ve tried centering them, and every solution under the sun from varnish remover to disc brake cleaner and sandpaper, it could be faulty brake callipers - Shimano road are renowned for it. After a dry ride on your noisy brakes, take the pads out- if they have damp circles on the back of the pads, your pistons are leaking mineral oil onto your pads and rotor. If this is the case, no new pads/ rotor / cleaning will solve it. There are 2 options- you can remove the hydraulic calliper, take it apart and service it, or buy a new caliper and start over. You do need to know what you are doing, so if you diagnose this problem, the bike shop is your friend. I’ve replaced an Ultegra caliper with this issue and now have silent brakes !

Nothing wrong with rim brakes issue is everyone that used discs assumes for some reason you can only run your best 2k carbon wheels all year round 🤷‍♂️ Just buy cheap alloy training wheels paired with Swiss stop BXP pads for winter, I purchased last week some shimano R5 wheels brand new off market place for £50.00 (the cost of 1 ultegra rotor) and will last me 2 or 3 winters... While I get the argument discs are better in the wet in my local club hardly anyone will ride when the heavens really open anyway 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I do cycle repairs and have probably seen less than 5 bikes that don't rub when I first put them in the stand.... Issue a lot of the time is the frames aren't faced correctly... Disc = A marketing money making con driving up the price of road bikes.... But that's my take (12 years mechanical experience)

If a person was to take the trouble to ride outdoors, why would they want to use anything but their best set of wheels even if it was on crappy weather? Isn’t the fact that you have a braking system that is heavily weather dependent to perform decently indicative that it’s a defective system? Imagine if your car manufacturer asked you to stop or avoid driving because “it’s raining or snowing”. You’d throw the car back to the manufacturer. The mental gymnastics you rim brake cyclists put yourselves through just to stick to a defective system is frankly nothing short of astounding.

@Dan c - you stated the problem at the beginning. When people say to me Disc brakes are better - I ask better than what? The issue is carbon rim brake wheels suck in the wet so they falsely equate rim brakes suck. NO it’s people riding carbon wheels - dry or wet is dumb. Alloy wheels and rim brakes stop significantly better than Disc brake less hassle less money and it’s a more elegant solution. Period.

If that was true, you’d see mtb and downhill cyclists on rim brakes. But you don’t. Why? Because rim brakes provide pathetically poor amount of brake control. When cycling (eg when sending it downhill while chasing the person in front) you want to be able to jam the brakes as hard as possible at the last possible moment while still staying just before the point the wheels lock. You can do that on a disc brake, altho you can’t say the same for a rim brake. With the brake modulation disc brakes offers, you can take the more aggressive lines or brake later than what you ever could on a rim brake.

@@slowcyclist4324 the reason u don't see mtb users on rim is simple brake track wear would be terrible with all the crap u ride through, let alone you'd never get a caplier under the tyres they now use. I also have an MTB and I'd take discs any day on an MTB over rim brakes.... Road is totally different to MTB you also have to remember the MTB system is totally different.... 4 pot capliers..... much bigger rotors..... No STI shifters like on road bikes meaning much larger master cylinder in the lever... Also MTB and road are totally different much faster speeds in road with much tighter tollanaces a perfect example is you only need to ride through some standing water on road bike and you'll often hear the rub.... you won't hear this on Mtb however as the pads can be much further away due to a bigger master cylinder therefore able to move more fulid than on a road STI lever... I'm not a disc hater I ride a disc MTB, I use to ride a disc trials bike aswel... but on a road bike if u need a hydro disc to control a 25mm or 28mm tyre imo you need to brush up on handling skills. I'm not saying discs are even bad but there in no way an upgrade like the media 'funny enough' will have you believe... End of the day I'm making more money now thanks to disc brakes with the endless bikes coming to me with issues 🤦‍♂️ But if people believe there better its madness... I mean what about Egan Bernal in the 2021 giro d'italia who use rim brakes and pulled away from everyone on the wettest day using rim brakes 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ if rim brakes where that bad surly he'd of been at a huge disadvantage with how wet it was 🤷‍♂️

You want discs on the mountain bike and rim brakes on the road bike. My Ultegra rim brakes stop on a sixpence on both road bikes. Not as good as disc in the wet? Who cares, who rides a road bike in the winter or in a washout summer? Road biking is a summer hobby, in decent weather. Long summer evening rides. Soon as winter and the rain comes, road bike goes away, out comes the mountain bike for on and off cycle paths, Trans Pennine trail etc. I don't want to road bike in winter, poor visibility in traffic, slippery road surfaces and water, mud etc, no thanks, that's what the MTB is for.

Disc brakes in my opinion just suck! Had so much hassle with rubbing, squealing and incompatibility issues on my gravel and mtb bikes that I’ve determined to NEVER buy a Road bike with discs, especially when my rim brakes are flawless! answered your own question your first road bike is disc so have nothing to actually compare a road bike too.... Discs are great on MTB but it's totally different the brakes are both disc but totally different again MTB often 4 pot much bigger rotors with more cleance and not forgetting on MTB the speeds are a low slower... Comparing road to mtb is like when people in the comments compare rim brakes to drum brakes 😂 Limiting factor on a road bike is the tyre that's usually 25 to 28mm you don't need hydro discs to slow a tyre of that size on tarmac...
