I have had a 15-22 for 8 years now, easily the most reliable rifle I have owned. If you use CCI MiniMags or Blazer it almost never has a stoppage. A 12inch barrel and a swapped out handguard make it ideal. I don't hang heavy things off the front of mine or push it against barricades. 99% of the time I am off hand shooting. Maybe mine would have this issue as well but I haven't noticed any shift over the years from how I use it. Perhaps adjusting your resting style would help, do you really need to push that hard into a barricade? If you are aware of this can't you just avoid the problem by resting it normally? Besides it is the lightest and most reliable out there. I would probably say that might have more benefit over other guns even with the group shift. It is built from the ground up as .22, it isn't trying to be a scale replica of an AR-15 and I think that helps it a lot, the bolt mass can be smaller and easier to deal with, far less moving parts in an enclosed system. It has nothing on it that it doesn't need to weigh it down or complicate it. I can't even remember the last time I had a jam in the last 4-5 years with it. No parts have broke yet, always consistent. Other options even the Tippmann seem to have some negatives in some areas as well especially magazines. I still think the 15-22 is the best way to go. I couldn't recommend it enough.

ive noticed mine only ever struggled with hollowpoints. honestly i didnt mean to buy HP ammo for it, it was just an oversight on my part when buying the ammo but i would have a failure to load almost every 3-4th round. with regular FMJ ammo I've never had a single issue since. (probably getting close to 3k rounds now)

Amusing how in the US we can easily acquire firearms but have to bend backwards to acquire "short barreled rifles". Meanwhile in the UK they have to bend backwards to buy any firearm, but at least "short barreled rifles" are seemingly treated the same way as any other rifle (or am I wrong?)
@Range23
@Range23 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's pretty much it. It's a long, drawn out process to get a firearms certificate here, lots of police and medical checks. But once you have it, most things come under the same requirements for lengths etc. It's also much easier to get suppressors over here too, I've know police put them down on certificates without people even asking for them!
@stinct1776
@stinct1776 2 жыл бұрын
@@Range23 I didn't see you cycle the rifles. are they semis or pull backs? That's right, suppressors are also a "big deal" here whereas over there it's just common sense hearing protection. Both SBR/SBS and suppressor restrictions are a taxation scheme here, a 1930's relic. Government's grabby hands making something so simple a "special thing". Carry on brother!
@Range23
@Range23 2 жыл бұрын
@@stinct1776 yeah, they’re both semis. We can only have semi auto in 22 rimfire and shotguns, anything centrefire has to be a manual action (bolt/lever/straight pull/etc.). That sounds very similar to over here in some ways, a lot of our laws are from legacy policy and outdated for the modern world. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll have some actual ‘common sense’ laws 😂

It was only from 10m and the POI was predictably low. Near zero is probably at 25m and far zero at 50m but I have to verify. Love the thing.❤ I'm not gonna cut the barrel or hang a bag in front of the barrel that's for sure. Barrel harmonics and all. Author is dead wrong on the fatal flaw of the MP 15-22. Fatal flaws is cutting the barrel and hanging a bag in front of the barrel while shooting.

Bob, I love your work, but Jesus Christ, those groups 😂. My issue with this test is that you've removed the barrel handguard plate that comes standard with the gun. Is the purpose of that plate to provide support relating to this issue? Without testing the gun in its factory state there's too many "what ifs" to make meaningful conclusions (though I do accept that the flex is happening back at the receiver).
@Range23
@Range23 2 жыл бұрын
Haha, yeah, definitely not my best groups 😂 Quite the contrary, the handguard/barrel clamp is there to support the handguard WITH the barrel (similar to the original front sight/gasblock on an AR). Removing it free floats the barrel which stops any outside forces acting on it, reducing any POI shift. It’s the same reason most modern ARs use free floated barrels and handguards. This was a very quick, impromptu test. It would be interesting to repeat if from a rest with less wind etc. Even to compare the gun with/without the barrel collar fitted

@@Range23 I appreciate the point about free floating the barrel. My gut feeling would be that S&W know how to make guns so the collar should be serving a purpose. A years ago I was thinking about a conversion kit for my AR-15 to make it shoot 22lr.. After two months of reviewing all the options which ALL had problems. I found Tippmann Arms AR-M422 Pro elite all metal construction EXACT match to my AR-15 . At the time I called my local shops and got very lucky and found One at $559.00. This rifle is super high quality, not one problem in +/- 500rds, My indoor range is only 25 yrds, I had a Holosun 403r and the Holosun 3X magnifier , I'm getting nickel size groups at the bench , I'm very happy with this outstanding Tippmann Arms AR-M422. I looked up their website a couple of months ago and that exact model wasn't listed anymore, they only had Pistol length models shown , I'm so glad I got the 16"barrel M4 model , this was the best rifle on the market no comparison to S&W , Ruger , H&K , CMMG Kits . I've only run CCI mag's 1235fps.copper coated round nose, I think copper coated ammo is cleaner for the barrel and hotter loads help proper cycling . Also true for the Taurus TX-22 hand gun. My barrel barely has any lands&groves so key holing can and has happened, the bullet's not spinning for stable flight . That's never happen with my Tippmann Arms AR-M422 rifle. Happy target practicing Buddy 🤠

I agree with @cookedaz. I honestly think this test was deliberately designed to make the 15-22 worse. I found mine extremally accurate. My mods, a few internal springs due to wear. A Timney trigger, 7 inch barrel guard and a Magpul stock, and it's the rifle to beat in our computations. It weighs half of my AR-9's with the same configurations. I have given advise to many sport shooters to use the 15-22 for local matches and one of us almost always wins. Rarely does a Ruger or other 22 LR win anything. Nice, light, and easy to use for the local match level, plus, standard AR parts fit! MSgt David R. Smyth, USAF, Ret.

Try putting the handguard cap back on and try again, free float is generally better but not necessarily what your rifle wants or needs, from one barrel to another they all have different personalities

It’s not great, but it’s more the receiver than the handguard causing it. To be fair, this was a bit of an extreme test just to demonstrate the point. I’d like to give it a go again with a stiffer handguard, just to see what happens.

The only problem I have with my S&W M&P 15-22 is: it doesn't like subsonic ammunition. Mine will jam every time. Currently using high velocity copper coated hollow points and it runs like a sewing machine. I'm getting about 75 rounds before I have to readjust my scope. Overall I'm shooting at 99.7% accuracy with that rifle and the heavy as f*** 16 power day/night scope on it. I swear that the scope is almost as heavy as the riffle, and it doesn't get any lighter in the middle of the night. I used to use a Ruger 10/22 for my pest control needs but I changed to the S&W M&P 15-22. After about 10,000 rounds... No problems except the failure to feed and eject subsonic rounds and silencer rounds. In my opinion this failure has nothing to do with the riffle. The rounds just don't have enough powder to make the bolt cycle fully.

I'm sorry, I don't understand the point! It's a knockoff. That's what it is. If it were meant to be compared to an AR-15 in performance they wouldn't charge $400 to $500! A young person, A person that doesn't shoot. Person that's new to shooting. A person that's a veteran shooter, but wants to pretend that he has the AR-15. But regardless. No one stands around with satchels hanging off the end of their Barrel or people hanging on it and swinging! Pick it up, Aim and shoot! I can take those results and turn them around just the opposite. Case in point. Instead of looking at the group that you made when you had a bag hanging off the end of the barrel. How about looking at the group when you didn't have a bag hanging on the end of the barrel. It shot almost as well as an AR-15. How about that!!!

It pulls down on the handguard, which in turn causes the barrel to drop as everything is held together by the plastic receiver. Not a massive issue 90% of the time. Just something to be aware of if shooting over distance or off supports.

I appreciate this video - this isn't something I'd even considered about my own 15-22. I, too, have both a 15-22 and a "Mil-Spec" gun with a CMMG conversion kit installed. I have to say, the POI issue notwithstanding, my 15-22 is noticeably more accurate than my rifle with the CMMG 22lr bolt and barrel. It may suffer from POI shift issues, but I'm happy with that trade off for it's insanely light weight. There have been a number of female shooters I've taken out for their first time who struggle to hold up heavier, all-metal guns but find that one to be very pleasant.

#1 - The S&W 15-22 has a problem with the Barrel nut coming loose. S&W sells a barrel nut tool that slides over the lenght of the barrel for proper tightening but one has to be careful not to over-torque and comprimising the threads. Your demonstration of the flex indicates a loose barrel nut.
@Range23

Nothing loose on the rifle my man, this is just the nature of a polymer upper receiver, you could take any 15-22 and the results would be the same.
