I'm trying to figure out why no one wants these trucks??? Also, why are these trucks dirt cheap when they are super reliable and parts are available at every local parts store????

As much as these trucks hold a special place in my memories, they had a slew of problems that rose colored glasses can’t help with. Anyone who has owned one of these can probably tell you every common rattle and rust hole these developed. You always carried a spare starter solenoid or two along with ignition modules. Fords had a very distinct power steering whine most likely were replaced 2-3 times. 4wd hubs and bearings went to hell quickly. The IFS systems on the 4wd were a pita to work on. Dual gas tanks? Give it a few years before they stop switching. If you got 130-150k on any of these motors you were doing good, really good. Matchbooks kept the vent windows tight.

Why? Major corrosion issues up-north, terrible fuel economy, and bad handling. In today’s world; “better than anything made today”…😂. However, I think an ‘86 5.0 EFI 5-speed in mint condition would be a desirable classic rig. Better than an equivalent year square body GM truck IMO.

Bullnose? Ha, more like box nose. I owned one of these pieces of trash, gutless and unreliable engines with throttle body fuel injection that either needs to get converted over to a carburetor to keep it running reliably and without unknown quirks, or just replace the entire truck. Regardless of the next person's opinion of it's appearance, the fact is these trucks were unreliable and underpowered due to heavy govt emissions standards and the auto industry in general was going through a guinea pig transitional phase into port fuel injection. Which port fuel injection was undeniably the best engine fuel delivery design of any vehicle era, no matter the make/model. It also reduced flooding the engine cylinders over time, making it the most reliable vehicles..... period.

@@DG-sf9ei so you’ve owned just one yet you think that validates your ignorant opinion? Hardly… I’ve owned several through the years, most were diesels and one was a 351w, all great engines. My 86 F350 had a Dana 60 front end that you couldn’t break if you wanted to and with an ATS turbocharger and T18 4spd with 3:55 gears I had plenty of power, got great fuel mileage and could pull a loaded gooseneck with a full size pulling truck and keep up with all the BigBlock Chevrolet guys with no trouble at all. All of mine were great trucks and I’d be lucky to still own any one of them.

Nows the time to snatch the 80-86 up if u find one cheap. Theyre slowly but steadily going up in value. Theyre a joy to drive. Especially that satisfying click the floor shift makes when going through the gears. Youll never get that feeling in a new truck ever again. Or a manual for that matter

My uncle bought a brand new F250 4x4 in 1984. Back then, Ford offered "lifetime" rust warranty. As long as one single repair did not exceed the value of the truck, Ford would honor it. And they did just that. He brought the truck to a body shop every 6 months religously the whole time of ownership. And they did just that. Up here in MN salt destroys vehicles. He owned that truck till 2000 and it looked immaculate. But, the warranty only covered panels that rust from the inside out. It had tailgates, box sides numerous times, door shells, front fenders, couple of hoods, etc. But, the floor pans were gone.

Back in the early 90s my boss had two of those trucks 3/4ton 4x4 6 cylinder. We live up in bush country with lots of hills and mud. The trucks were in great shape because they were slow and under powered. Then he bought a 1990 3/4 302 4x4 and once a week it was in the trees because no one was used to driving a truck with more power.

Trust me, people want them. But people are afraid to jump into a 40 year old truck unless it's near mint condition, and they also don't want to spend over $30,000 for a 40 year old truck. Plus, the 90s trucks are more popular right now, especially the Powerstrokes. A lot of people want turbo diesels, not the IDIs even though I'd prefer a 100% mechanical diesel. Way more reliable.

The guy he bought it from in 1994 used it as a daily driver and in the glove box is the original paperwork from a ford dealership in Booneville, Arkansas dated 10/10/80 says he bought that truck brand new for $7,960. I just sold last year a 1986 year I graduated from high school, 2 Wheel Dr. it was the same color as that brownish one. I don’t know what that color is but it’s not brown it’s weird brownish gold I guess they call it and it had 47,000 miles on it it was a really good truck. It didn’t run when I bought it. All needed was a carburetor rebuild and some timing and a few other little small small things. It was wonderful and I’m kicking myself in the ass right now because I’m remodeling an old house and I need a truck. I have a bump side but it’s too nice to use as a work truck. That’s a hot rod my bumper sides a hot rod. Yes those are both great trucks summer more desirable than others if you remember first couple of years I think 80 to 82 g to make them lighter and they bend. The one I saw was a 460 four-speed, single cab no rust, California truck in California at three-quarter tons did not come with catalytic converter‘s yet anyhow, nice video guys have a great truck. I’m looking for another one just stay away from the first few years. They got better as they made more of them and I think they’re way better than the flat nose ones of the late 80s early 90s, I had a 96 and I didn’t like it as much as the 86 but then again, the 96 was a 4.9 vs The 460

Nah, the Bull/Brick Nose Fords are BY FAR the most popular Truck build now because they are the last of the affordable Classic Trucks. I watch trends in the classic auto markets, the top 3 builds in the Classic car market is the 1. The Mid-late 70's Muscle Cars 2. The 1960 Economy cars (Chevy II's, Falcons, Valiant/Dart and AMC Rebels) and 3. The 7th, 8th and 9th Gen (1980-1997) F150's. It's because they are all cheap to buy and cheap to build because they are "unwanted" vehicles and the parts are available. You can go out and buy a Bull/Brick nose F150 and build it pretty much anyway you want for the same price or cheaper than you can get a Dentside Ford, Square body Chevy, or Frog face Dodge roller....

One thing to remember is that in the 1980s and earlier a lot of three-quarter ton trucks came with gas six cylinders. Ford had a 300 in.³ in-line six. GM’s had their 292. I’m not sure if dodge trucks have a large in-line six, but they did have the famous 225 slant six. Dodge may not have had a larger slant six.

Mine was a card man and he rebuilt the carburetor and modified it a little bit made it ran better. He tuned it. Right now I have an 89 Ford f350 7.5/460 Which I wanna get rid of the fuel injection system on EFI I want to switch the manifold out and put a sniper on it. I think. I can get run better and get better fuel mileage. Cause it's self tuning.

Nice Trucks !!! 85 & 86 F 250 and above didn't have catalict convertors. Air pump would put it back in the manifolds .they burned real clean . I had a red 1986 F250 2wd 351,4 barrel holley carb,c6 trans and the monster rear end . Hands down the best truck made , no ac ,you use the small side widows, better than ac . I miss you girl .

I agree with the ugly. Not because of the actual esthetics, but the oversimplified boxiness and lack of any curviture simply makes it look dull and generic. The 73-79 fords had it right. Nothing made after has even come close to looking that good.

I have an '85 with the then-new 5.0 EFI/AOD trans combination. I've been through a pretty frustrating learning curve with it, but I finally got it figured out and it runs nice. I'm ashamed to say it never got used for what I bought it for, which was moving to and then renovating a home I bought. It was completely unreliable at the time. Now it just sits in a storage yard:(

1975 was the first year for Catalytic converters on cars, they started getting phased in on trucks over the next decade. We had a 75 F-100 that was non-catalyst but still required unleaded fuel. In 1985 it wasn’t A/C delete as A/C was an option.

Most people do not like the first couple of years of that body style because the frame had large holes in the side rail of it. I have seen 2 different trucks like it and one the frame buckled badly from overloading and the other one broke in half from a car accident.

Having owned and driven a few of these trucks, they have one major problem. They can’t tow shit. These things are gutless. Having owned a few 460s these engines are terrible they all blow up. Those 6.9 diesels were reliable but absolutely gutless. It’s too bad they don’t make simple trucks like this but with modern diesels, frames, and axels. I hate all the crap on the new trucks, but they can actually tow a loaded trailer in the mountains. These old trucks are great if you don’t tow anything, I can’t imagine hooking up even a 26,000 lb loaded trailer to one of these old trucks. I don’t think you could make it up a 2 percent grade. If your not towing these trucks are awesome.

It wasn't "A/C delete"; a/c was an option you didn't get unless you ordered it. I'm not sure if it was standard on anything Ford Division made up till then, maybe the Thunderbird, Crown Vic and the Taurus GLS. My mom almost bought an Escort wagon without ac new in '86 but got better financing on a Plymouth Horizon (you think interest rates are high now, look up what they were in the early/mid '80s!)

I think the 351 specs you said were for actually the 351ho that year. It had a aluminum intake, holley 4brl, and the hotter camshaft from marine 351. I want to say a regular 351 had like 150-170hp only.
@danhoyland142

I hate spouting off specs without re looking them up, so I just went On google to look them up and come back. So I guess the only 4brl 351w in 1985 was the HO . So if that truck came with a stock 4 barrel it’s an HO and you were right. They did offer a 2 brl which was a non HO version and that had 158hp. You should put real dual exhaust on it, those sound great with that marine cam. A kid I knew had a 351ho in his bronco and when he put flowmasters on it , it didn’t just sound like a tinny drone like the stock 302s did or even worse, a 305 or 350 Chevy tbi. They got some lope to them and scream at WOT. I really like these motors.

Actually those 2wd trucks were very very popular in their day because they were used to pull big travel trailers. People back then were a bit more sensible and didn't see the need for a 4x4 duelie diesel ton and a half with 12 doors and a video screen for every child to pull a trailer to the canpground. All vehicles need to be taken in their context and time period. One cant apply current thought and availability to older vehicles.

Aw man these are all great trucks! Just like any other vehicle (post 75 here in Calif), you have to deal with the state/county emissions/smog racket. Heat risers, smog pumps, de tuned carbs and the other emissions clutter with the miles of vacuum hose has to stay and be maintained. There are plenty of areas left in the country that don’t have the aforementioned racket. 5k is a great deal on the 351w/auto! That’s not a lot of money. Right person has to be scanning Craig’s list or wherever you have it listed.

OL needs to be Seaton-LT, Mayers-LG, Zilinskas-C, Johnson-RG, Benson-RT, Smalls TE. I want to see that 2 back set at least 15 plays, and I want Augustave to get 15 carries and Hayden/Welch split 10 carries. They need to stop Jefferson from running the ball and they beat UCF on the road. Tyler Browne is a great guy, but he's a G5 level player.

These trucks were made to last forever if taken care of. Good 'ol American steel, unlike today's plastic trucks. Would you be able to do a cold start comparison on these two F250s sometime? When I mean cold I mean like not started for a week or two. I'm curious to see which one takes longer to crank up based on the carb and engine differences.

grampa bought an '82 F250 brand new and it had no heat right off the dealer floor. it was a gas hog with no power and never could tow much. Dad somehow thought it was a great idea to buy it when grampa died and was sorely disappointed. The truck was gutless, cheaply built and had the wonderful split front axle that wasn't good at being either an IFS front end or a solid axle. somehow it was the worst of both worlds. i was constantly working on it for dad.
