Something about the type of dye they used to use for reddish brown specifically have pigments that just really f*cking hated the plastic polymers in the pieces and made the pieces super brittle until Lego was literally forced to get new dyes for reddish brown bricks specifically. It still happens sometimes though. This also means that there’s the old brown, the new reddish brown, and the middle child “brittle brown” as it’s called, where brown and reddish brown are very different colors but reddish brown and brittle brown are just _slightly_ off except for the fact that one is made of plastic and the other is made of a f*cking bakelite (or, to be formal, poly­oxy­benzyl­methylene­glycol­anhydride).
