I sat down as a kid and beat the original Hylide on the NES. I should have felt accomplished after enduring all the pain and suffering I went through to get through it, but I felt nothing and I never returned to the game again. I saw Virtual Hylide years later and quickly said "Nope!"

I was in my late 20’s when i spotted this game and looked at it the name and remembered a game from the past with the same name except it didn’t have virtual and I’m like, that game was not for me so this won’t be either. Really sorry you had to experience it!

I love Virtual Hydlide. It definitely has its issues, but back when the Saturn was new this game was amazing to me. I’ll still play it from time to time today and it only takes about 15 minutes to play through the entire game.

I remember James Rolfe covered this trainwreck on an Avgn episode. Also Game Sack too. Sadly there are still games like this on modern platforms. How or why? I wish I knew. But this one "is the wooorst' 🎵🎶 I seriously wonder if some From Software devs, worked on this as a test run back then.

Got the game second hand back in the day and had no idea how bad this game was. I thought it was going to be a tomb raider game and boy I was wrong and after 15 mins stopped playing it and never played it again. In fact I still own the game and out of my collection if I have to sell one game this would have to be it.

The graphics actually look pretty nice for the era, which explains why it is choppy af because the devs didn’t care about the game actually having good performance. Which checks out cuz the game itself is crap as well.

admittedly I was morbidly curious about this one. I had heard it was actually running off T&E's golf engine, if you can believe it. IDK why they thought *that* would work as a rogue-like RPG, but they tried it. definitely seems like a huge trainwreck, for sure.

All the Hydlide games are awful but I got to give it to them, they were trying to make an Elder Scrolls on the Sega Saturn, except they failed miserably, the video here actually makes this game look better than it actually is somehow. It really is one of the worst games of all time

Quest 64 is one of my fav N64 games it's only flaw is the story is weak but sound graphics and gameplay are all solid if you know what you are doing. Now virtual hydlide looks like a mess of a game that I agree.

Doom only came out a year and a half prior to VH and the Saturn version of Doom is crap. Seems weird to knock hard on a game that came out at the very beginning of the Saturn’s life. Love the gripe about the randomizer when the game gives you the world code at the beginning if you want to play it again. Oh no, a game that is different every time you play it, that must be shit….. (Looks at the number one selling game ever, has this mechanic in it.)

Hydlide in general is an abomination of a series. The original Hydlide on NES is like playing a broken version of Zelda that someone dropped into a crap filled septic tank and then vomited on it. Super Hydlide on Sega Genesis is like someone took a runny diarrhea marathon on that game while eating spoiled beans and burgers from White Castle. I will argue that Virtual Hydlide is MUCH better than the other Hydlides, but that's like saying a large log of crap with corn bits in it is better than runny diarrhea. One is slightly better than the other, but both are things you don't want to deal with while sitting on a toilet. On a side note, the fact Hydlide managed to fart out a TRILOGY of games worldwide in North America, Japan, etc (and even a few MORE Hydlide games that released that stayed in Japan like Hydlide 2: Shine of Darkness and Hylide 3: Space Memories, which it's semi-remake known as Super Hylide is based on) while GOOD games like "Beyond Good and Evil" can't even get a sequel and several good game series like Cosmic Fantasy had almost all of their games stuck in Japan while THREE Hydlide games managed to get released worldwide is an abomination. Hell, the fact that Hydlide on NES and Super Hydlide on Sega Genesis sold well enough so Virtual Hydlide on Sega Saturn could become a reality is a holy terror of revelation that people financially supported this hell hole of a series. If Virtual Hydlide had released on a more popular console like Playstation or Nintendo 64 (where people were starved for RPGs) there probably would have been another Hydlide game during the Playstation 2 / Gamecube / Sega Dreamcast / OG Xbox era.
