At the end of a romantic relationship, or even working one, to what extent should you cut that person out of your life entirely?
Some of us do this immediately. We burn all our bridges.
We scream, yell, and as a matter of pride we declare to ourselves that we’ll never associate with them again. But is that a good way to end things?
I don’t always think so. We can also get punished later on for being too stubborn in life.
In this week’s LOVELife video, I explain exactly when it’s ok to burn a relationship and when you should leave the door open for some kind of future (even if right now that idea sounds too painful…).

Jules WinnField Thats terrible. Im really sorry to hear that. Even after a 3 yr relationship you really get to know someone by the way they leave you. Sometimes they turn out to be someone you didnt expect. When I was dumped via text I just walked away. 13 days of no contact and i dont plan on looking back. Keep trying to hold on to the fact that we should be glad we didnt spend a lifetime with people who showed zero respect

This is beautifully said. We live in a throw away society where people are always looking for the next best thing. It's a rare and lovely thing to admit something isn't working and the page needs to be turned, rather than ripped out and tossed in the rubbish. It's so much better for the soul to end with grace.

My x girlfriend of 8 years dumped me over text. We got back together 3 months later I dumped her over text. Because she started direspecfull. I guess its because I was the one that called her after she first dumped me via text. Been a year ago since break up. I still feel weird about it. Going back to x sometimes they thing you have no other option. But she knew that so many women were chasing. But I didn't cheat. Even when she undergoes surgery she was in recovery stage for 5 years. I was there with her. She disrespected me crossing my boundaries. That's it I'm done.

when you break someone over the phone, it is actually due to guilt and fear. fear that the other person might attack, might try to persuade you otherwise, fear that you will feel 10 times worse doing it face to face, awkwardness etc. and franky, I would prefer it if someone broke up with me over the phone. it would be less painful for everyone

My boyfriend ghosted me for almost a month. At first I thought he was just busy with work (he is really busy). But then I could see he was reading my messages, but not responding (I only messaged once a week, because I thought he needed space). Finally, I had enough, and dumped him. With polite strength, I told him how his behaviour affected me, that I wish he had more courage, and that I have higher expectations. I wished him well, and ended the relationship. Of course, THEN he responds. But the damage had been done. 35 year old men should not be ghosting their partners (we were together just over a year). Put on your big boy pants and have that difficult conversation, or you risk losing out on any future with that person. I have totally lost any interest in seeing him again, because I have no respect for him.

EVEN KATY PERRY GOT A TEXT! LOL Hell, this happened to me with a 47-year old high school crush who came 1600 miles to spend four days with me. He pushed me into a long-distance relationship immediately, started making plans to move to my town and in with me (without even consulting me), He pressed me to buy airfare to come visit him this Thanksgiving and then, the bastard dumped my by changing his status to "single" and ghosting me on all media and phone. THEN, a friend pointed something out to me in the background of one of the photos he sent to me during the relationship...the scumbag was using drugs. Ewww....LOSER! He's lost his looks, had three failed marriages, I think I dodged a bullet in the end.

What it all comes down to. Is how you treat a person because what you have done to some else will come back to you one day. Have enough respect to talk that person face to face. Not over a text message that's just disrespectful a person deserve that respect.. karma is real because what you think is so worthless one day. You'll find yourself looking for them every day!

Please, people, break up in person. Breaking up over text lefts your partner in not believing that's over. It's the feeling of agony and pain mixed together, becouse you know you should leave other person alone, but you don't have a good proof that you should, so you just keep texting, feeling confused and trying to get the person back. No text in the world could replace voice and meeting in person. It couses s lot of problems with mental health becouase you didn't break up, you just keep the person hanging and confused all the time and that person can't continue. I know it's hard to break up in person, but if you had some beautiful times with your other half, give them respect like that.

I totally agree... my ex and I broke up with an mutual decision that things at the time weren't going to work out. Mainly due to external factors like me going to college and him trying to move up in his career... We both agreed that in the future whether we get back together or not will still be there for each other as friends. There was no bad blood in their relationship and it ended on good terms with an in person talk.

I think the reasonwhy so many burn bridges, is closure: so often closure isn't issued during a breakup and closure is created when a person is stuck on the person, the feeling, etc that was left behind. So in order for them to get on with their lives, they make closure, or burn a bridge, etc. And some bridged NEED to be burned, like an abusive relationship, or leaving a workforce that was bad for your health, bad for your wellbeing. Sometimes writting a person off isn't a bad thing: It's a liberating exercise.

It does not matter how things ended, it could have ended well or very badly, if they are meant to be in your life in the future, they will. EITHER WAY, what matter is that you find the peace within you regardless how someone else treated you. this is the first video i dont agree with, Matthew, we should not live our lives thinking "WHAT IF...i might need this person in the future"
@star1Lu
@star1Lu 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. While you can uphold yourself to a certain standard of class, at the end of the day when it comes to relationships and feelings, and the degree of the misconduct and damage, some bridges are meant to be burnt. If they come back in your life, they will and by then the both of you will be in a different capacity and that situation would be of a different purpose. And then... We see. But not wise to think of the WHAT IFs

Exception done to psychos, with which one should never hesitate to burn all bridges and run away without notice. These people, no matter how useful it could have been to spare them for one day when you might need them. It is always better to keep them away. As for those psychos knowing that you are compassionate and not running away from them, only means that you are still possible to get back.

My ex girlfriend break up with me in a terrible way, she did it through a text message and i felt like she didn't have the gut to end it face to face. we spend a meaningful amount of time together and i felt i deserved to have a post break up conversation face to face because i already accepted her decision of breakup. but rather she started being abusive to me, damaged my confidence in every way imaginable with so many ugly words and started to threatened in every possible way including killing me. a lot of people break up through text messages without realising that it would make things even more painful for the person being dumped. it's easier for them to break up like this and they don't have to see the reaction of another person. some people are very bad at doing awkward things face to face. and it made us feel they didn't really respect us after all and it's the worst feeling.

I will find the strength to keep my heart open. The last guy that ended it poorly with me is someone I went to K-12 with so the wound cut a little deeper. I would have liked more specifics and examples here. I understand that it's wise to not sabotage all future chances of connection and working together. The actual process of moving on, though, can get super messy. When I try to walk away from people, they often dig in their heels and tug, and my attempts to be as gentle as possible still gets twisted. Professional acquaintances are easier to keep because there's not such a deep emotional pull. Not to mention that sometimes the situation is dangerous and lacks trust, and you may not want to leave that door open for your own sake as well as theirs. It can be really tempting to go back to a bad situation, so closing the door firmly is a way to help both people.

By the time I break up with you I’ve already done a calculation to see how useful you’ve been to me in the past while we were in a relationship and how useful I think you might be to me in the future when we are not in a relationship. If I decide to scorch the earth with you it’s because I consider you useless. That’s far in my life that strategy hasn’t been a problem and I feel immense relief when I can really give somebody a piece of my mind rather than staying quiet to keep the peace.

Message made me cry because of a situation with a guy I really care for. We are just friends now, but he said for now he wants to stay friends and cares about me because he is an alcoholic and seeking treatment. I didn't freak out and/or cry. I held it together in front of him and said "Thank you for trusting me with this information. I do want the best for you and support you through this as a friend. I care about you too." He didn't burn bridges with me, and I didn't with him. Not to say I didn't later lose it and cry once he left. I do want him, but sober. As far as I know, he's never been drunk around me, as it's usually right after he's left work. I just can't be around as a girlfriend yet. Hopefully get help and get back together if I am emotionally stable and supportive and not cut off all contact after him opening up to me on a very deep topic.

When my first boyfriend broke up with me, he did it in a terrible way, he didn't really tell me, he just had another girlfriend, and I found them together, and I was very mad... My boyfriend of over 3 years just broke up with me today, but he didn't really say much of anything at all. I asked him for one last hug, and I told his family I would miss them, and I left. I highly doubt he'll ever talk to me again, but I wasn't angry, I am of course really upset, since I believed he was going to propose this year, he told me about how he had the money to buy me a ring and everything. I'll miss him.. I almost wonder if it would have been better if he would have done it in a bad way, because it would make me feel a bit less pain.

I dumped him over text but, I wasn't crude or disrespectful, I was simply direct and final with my words. I was tired of him avoiding me and hearing his excuses for not keeping his word. one afternoon He said he was too busy to talk to me so, texted him "very well, I understand that you are busy so I will be brief, this is the very last text message you'll ever receive from me and I'm breaking up with you,Goodbye." I didn't feel the need to get nasty or complain about his behaviors or explain why I was dumping him when I already told him before that, that I don't put up with that kind of treatment from anyone and promptly ended things. When you break up with someone this way, you maintain your dignity and are able to hold your head high knowing that you didn't accept mediocrity and disrespect but you didn't get petty or vindictive about things not working out, you simply end it and move forward to something better than what you were getting in the past which was unacceptable. Thanks for the video! ❤️

I have recently left my boyfriend of 4 months, and I broke up with him through text. Ik that people might think this is cruel, but I have tried to break up with him in real life, and it was so hard, he gaslighted me, and I just couldn't do it. It was because I loved him too much and still do, and trying to say goodbye to him was too hard. When I said goodbye, I was gentle with him and did it without insulting him. I apologised for my mistakes and how I treated him because I am sure that he wasn't happy with me either and wished him nothing but the best and truly forgave him for what he did to me. But we truly have to normalise breaking up through text but in a gentle way. Even though we aren't together does not mean that one-day destiny would not get u guys together. How you said Matthew that if u leave with elegance and class then one day that relationship might be available.

Have to disagree with you, Matthew. If I have broken up with someone nicely, the guy always tries to come back as soon as his willie is hard and he can't get laid. So.....I started pissing the guys off when I break up with him so that they don't try to come back later. Sour milk is still sour no matter how many times it's taken out of the fridge then put back in. It rarely works if ever. They become exes for good reasons. Ex boyfriends, ex bosses, ex employees, ex friends. No second chances. Been there, done that, learned.

Yeah, a bit hard to do when your boyfriend just broke up with you for the 6th time over text.. I made the mistake of always leaving the door open for him to communicate although he always said we're "done for good". He has the habit of partying and ignoring me for a few weeks and then coming back, saying he missed me and wants to move in together and start the life that I'm dreaming of... And I always gave him another chance. I'm not saying I'm perfect or flawless, I definitely did make mistakes in this relationship.. All I'm saying is that it's probably not always a good idea to give everyone the chance to come back into your life.

Something in my life but I needed more time from him, text were not enough, and if it was like that for a month, and I discussed already about the miscommunication. I’m not going to lie, I’ve broken up with someone over text. I broke up with him because he was putting no effort and I just felt like a doormat in his life. I broke up with him knowing I still wanted it to work, but couldn’t see it working between us if putting in effort wasn’t something that came naturally, plus I sensed he was talking to other women. I felt bad, of course. He was older than me and I just started opening my eyes more to how he was treating me especially whenever there were any issues. I didn’t want to extend the relationship further and wait for him to get back to be honest, I couldn’t see myself saying I was in a relationship seeing how little effort someone can put in even developing a relationship. I knew I did the right thing in the end when he resorted to engage in his typical silent treatment similar to every time there was any issue except this time the silent treatment seemed fitting. And finally, he came back saying, “it’s going to hurt you more than it’s going to hurt me.”

My gf if 6 years ended it with me on the phone saying that we had nothing in common. We survived family tragedy, were long distance for 2.5 years, but none of that meant anything to her. When I met her face to face trying to get answers, she would just yawn and act so disrespectful, nothing like the woman I fell in love with. I left my dream career because I was so afraid I might lose her if I stayed with it. I felt so low that I actually contemplated suicide because I didn’t want to feel that way anymore. I don’t know what I did wrong. Hell, I’m with somebody now and I still feel that way, a shell of my former self. I called her the love of my life and I only intended on using that phrase with one person and now that she’s gone, I feel like my heart wouldn’t be able to feel that way again. Anyways...yeah...

So here's my story. My girlfriend broke up with me because of *one single lie*. We're both 16 years old, at school, everybody knew that we were made to be together. Sometime at the beginning of the relationship she asked me, if I had a girlfriend before. I didn't, but I said yes, like every boy of my age would do who wanted to sound a bit experienced. I've also planned on telling her the truth later on. And in seven months of being together we've only talked twice about that and only for 2 minutes in total. A month and a half ago she somehow found out, that I didn't have a girlfriend before and she instantly broke up with me. She said it was not about what I lied to her, but that I lied to her in the first place. I went into no contact almost right away and she reached out to me last week. But there was no conversation. Wish me luck guys and girls. And thanks for the advice.

Good advice. But very often in life when you decide to do this the other person reacts too badly to these news and starts behaving like they are hating you.. Especially when it comes to personal relationships. I've seen people breaking up with their partners and their reaction is hateful and stays this way for too long. Therefore, it's incredibly hard to end things in a classy and friendly manner (you can be classy always but what if the other person is not? I mean it's hard to expect that you and this person are going to be if not friends then just on good terms. It depends on the character of this other person whether or not the relationship will stay friendly.

From what I observed, from a lot of the comments, there are many hurting people out here, I've been one them. Trust me. The only things I would say.....is first, KEEP YOUR HEART RIGHT! Do NOT become bitter, or the person who've hurt you, betrayed you and your trust. Just because someone has discarded you, does NOT make it so. NO ONE is worth discarding (who has a good heart). Right now, Selfishness is like an epidemic. Second, search for something other than you that brings you up and not down. Pours into you and not strip you....of your time, your love and your spirit. For me, it's my Faith! Keep choosing love.....

When I ended on good terms with my former fling/ first relationship, it gave me hope for us to be together sometime again in the future. Two months later, after not talking to me because he wanted me to move on(and he went to his home country), he tells me he still has feelings for me. We then speak again for a week but he kept leaving me on read and all I wanted to do was catch up and not do dirty/flirty talk all the time. When I called him out on leaving me on read, he said maybe we shouldn't talk anymore because it will hurt both of our feelings, we live an ocean apart. So we decided to be "friends" and he told me maybe we can talk when it's each others birthdays. I opened up to him fully about how I felt and he responded a lot with "idk" or I don't know what to say" When I asked about being friends, he quickly said "okay sounds good" After that it made me doubt if what he said about missing me was real. I still miss him and feel for him more than he does for me, but now I have a bad taste in my mouth about him and how we ended.

Oh my god I feel so much for this one. I hope you're doing fine now because I had exactly the same happen to me except my friend ended up blocking me after we went into this nonstop attacking and insulting. Me and my friend pretty much started the same way you did. He started getting flirty when the moment we had years back was purely platonic although he had shown romantic interest in me at the time. But we left things good when we had to part. Then years later, the pandemic hit and we started talking more despite being on different sides of the world. We even tried to have a long-distance thing at one point but he decided to take a step back after the conversation started getting stressful for a couple of months. I was already emotionally invested and had a hard time detaching when I should have. I did try to be friends like he wanted after that but my heart wanted more so fights just kept going on to the point where there was no respect left at all. Just sucks that some people would rather end things on bad terms than talk it out. What hurts the most was that he was the one starting the chase but I am the one left in pain. I still miss him and he hasn't blocked me everywhere but the last thing he said to me was to tell me to f*ck off....after 6 years of friendship.

I was left being hurt and wanted to end it, I didn't want to see her anymore because it only would make me emotional about how she treated me in that time so i broke up via text, I believe she didn't care about how we broke up but felt good after I finally did it. I stopped and I asked her what can we do, and now she said it's better that everyone stay alone (break up) through email 😭😭. and she said that she is afraid that she is going to regret that decision she has made. she said that she will miss me. before she sent that email, I tried everything so that we solve all the issues we've been having, and now she said that she needs to work on his health, personal issues, etc. I've decided to not contact her again because I'm heartbroken and I need to move on. I tried everything to save this relationship, but now I'm the one fighting to keep our relationship alive she has mentioned before that she has some mental illness but in the email, she said that it has nothing to do with our relationship. I WANT TO MOVE ON. Your advice are highly appreciated..... 😭😢😢😿

Whenever your ex systematically sabotaged the relationship, and monkey branched to someone else. Then yes, it is that black and white. Might else well burn that bridge because they will repeat their ways on you if they decide to come back.

After one and a half year of chatting every day, calling each other every weekend, out of the blue she became cold and made everything possible to convey the message she didn't care anymore about me. Still, when I told her: "If I've became a burden, just tell me and I won't bother you anymore", she reply that I shouldn't think in that way, that she was just too busy with her job etc. She disappeared for three day after that... Finally she told me we were just friends and one week later she told me she started dating someone else. I was devastated. I am still struggling to accept that she did this to me. I wasn't expecting anything like that from her. I thought she was different. I cried for days. Even now, after one month, I still miss her despite what she did to me. I went no contact and she never ever tried to reach out despite she tried to friendzone me during the breakup...

I'd think of him as an opportunist if I knew he thought that way. P.s. Matt. The beard suits you.
