While we stayed a week in Cornwall, UK during late December 2021 we got to visit a lot of coastal sites along the Cornwall coast. This is our drone video of one of those fantastic sites....The Crowns Engine Houses at Botallck Mines.
Two of the most iconic engine houses of Cornwall are located at the Crowns in Botallack, on the north coast above the great Atlantic seas, in part of Cornwall that is designated a World heritage site.
The Crowns mine and engine houses were named after the Three Crowns: the rocks on which they were built. The area is full of many different minerals, including Botallackite, which can only be found there. Copper and tin were the main metals mined in Botallack. The tin was mainly found in granite underground and the copper in killas rock under the seabed. The underground workings at the Crowns were a mile long, with one-third of the shafts and tunnels being under the seabed.
The Crowns’ engine houses were built in the 1830s and 1860s and were an engineering feat. The lower one housed a pumping engine and the higher one was for a whim or winding engine. In 1842, a rich copper deposit was discovered, which made the mine profitable for the first time in decades. In 1863, a terrible accident led to the death of nine miners, including a boy of 12, when the chain of a wagon lifting them to the surface broke.
The Crowns engine houses at Botallack near St Just which is a nice little village. St Just-in-Penwith is the nearest town to Land’s End. It has an ideal situation for visitors to the far west of Cornwall as it is situated on the edge of the moors and close to the beautiful north coast, about 8 miles west of Penzance. Originally the centre of the tin mining industry in this part of Cornwall, the town’s past is reflected in the nature of the streets of granite cottages. St Just was once the mining centre of the peninsula and disused engine houses dominate the landscape.
