The "Wurst" Mic For Drums!!

The last example is just the sm57 in the "Wurst" position! No added eq or compression

What about if you had a larger drum setup? I feel like if you use this technique along with your typical close mics and overheads, the "Wurst" would be a perfect alternative to ambient/room mics on drums.

You can certainly use it as a “color” mic! Distort it, compress the s*t out of it, throw it into a reverb pedal…. The uses are endless!

At school I liked using it almost like you would a parallel compression aux. I slammed it with the SSL bus comp and blended it it for body

Hmmm. Maybe combined with a recorderman setup and a kick mic. It's a bit thin now.

It can be a great placement to get all the drums for demos, or use it as a “color” mic in combination with other close mics.

You can definitely use a wider pattern. Just remember you will also pickup more cymbals as well. Its fun balance to get the sound you are looking for.

What if you have a cowbell over the bass drum hoop? It wont have a negative effect?

Give it try and see how much cow bell you get! You might need to push the mic in a little further toward the snare, or raise your cowbell up away from the mic a bit. In the end, if you have a fever, the only prescription is more cowbell!
