The X-Trail Files #41 'How to remove rear bumper'

Part 41.
As much as I like the T30, (have owned it for six years now), I have to say these recent repairs and tasks have tested my patience - the rear bumper removal especially.
There's not much to the rear bumper - a quite flimsy but tough plastic shell with no impact absorbing foam or aluminium impact bar. It's held on with just a bunch of plastic push-clips, self-tapping bolts that sit in plastic clips on the wheel arch panels and some 10mm bolts and nuts. Pretty much all of them were rusty and nearly all of them sheared off despite pre-soaking them in Plusgas. So the days I filmed this, I was not in a good mood.

Cheers, I was surprised how simple the rear bumpers are - no strengtheners or alloy or foam crash bars - just a thin plastic moulding.

Is engine temperature gauge reading normal? Check coolant level as too low a level will cause poor coolant flow through heater matrix. When engine is fully warmed up, carefully feel the heater matrix pipes that pass through the bulkhead. They should be hot or at least hot and the flow return cooler. Can't remember what pipe is flow and what is return. I'll have to dig out my PDF workshop manual. Lack of cabin heat can also be a fault with air blend flaps within the dashboard/HVAC unit. Not sure if these have a heater valve to control hot coolant through matrix of just closing off airflow. I've not experienced this problem on a T30 so going to have a read the manuals to see what Nissan's fault flowchart says.

@@TK42138 thanks for the help , I will check the pipes going into the bulkhead to see if the waters flowing through , yes the temp is reading normal and fully topped up at the header tank , will check the rad has water in also , thanks again 👍

I've found the PDF for T30 Air conditioning and heating and it's complex because its all controlled by LAN or local area networks. It mentions basic checks such as coolant levels but also mentions air control and distribution flap doors which divert or open or close cool air coming in with warmed air via the heater core/matrix. Shame KZbin got rid of their messaging feature because I could send you the PDF. Are you on any of the Facebook Xtrail UK groups or Twitter, Instagram etc?

Hmm I’ve checked both pipes to the heater matrix going into the bulkhead after a good run , do you think it could indicate the thermostat has gone on the blink and failed ? I’m not on and social media but I could probs use my pals if need be I’m hoping it’s not too serious I’d be out of my depth and I love the old beast .

In addition to a thermostat there is also an additional coolant control valve which is similar in operation to the thermostat. It's located at the righthand end of the cylinder head (from point of view of looking at engine). Hard to explain what it does without diagrams. Worth noting the important coolant level check is at the radiator. On a COLD engine only - remove the rad cap. Coolant level should be level with base of filler neck. There should also be coolant at the marked levels on the overflow tank.
