Canyons of the São Francisco River (also known as Xingó Canyon), are in fifth place in the ranking of the largest navigable canyons in the world
They are located between the states of Sergipe and Alagoas.
We are in Oho D'água do Casado, Praia da Dulce, Alagoas, where we will board the Catamaran do Chestnut to the canyons of São Francisco,
Sergipe. The journey takes around 45 minutes to Plataforma do Talhado. Along the way, you will enter scenes of rare beauty and formations
geological characteristics of the Caatinga biome. So leave your LIKE and subscribe! You will certainly be helping us to bring other videos like
that.
The São Francisco Canyons begin at Cachoeira de Paulo Afonso and end near the Xingó Hydroelectric Plant. With 65km in length, it has
rock walls up to 100 meters high and in some points the depth reaches 190 meters. Your starting point, Cachoeira de Paulo
Afonso, in Paulo Afonso, Bahia, caught the attention of many adventurers, scientists and authorities in the 19th century, among them the explorer
Richard Burton and Emperor Dom Pedro II. The Canyons of the São Francisco River, emerged after the damming of the waters of the São Francisco River
for the construction of the Xingó Hydroelectric Plant, on the border of Alagoas and Sergipe, opened in 1994.
Canyons are forms of relief and result from the action of water on Earth's surface rocks over geological time, wearing away
the rocky material and digging the valleys. It is clear that the São Francisco already flowed over the surface in the Creataceous era (80 million
of years). Today, the canyons of the São Francisco River, which rips through metamorphic rocks, granites and sedimentary rocks, forms walls on the order of
one hundred meters high. The São Francisco Canyon region also presents unique characteristics in terms of territorial occupation,
which begins in the prehistoric period (9,000 years), with hunters who left countless rock inscriptions, going through the period of
Colonial Brazil, with the first pioneer explorers.
The dam at the Xingó Hydroelectric Plant, opened in 1994, made navigability viable, a fact that boosted tourism significantly.
exceptional, with the main attractions being boat trips and bathing in the green waters of the artificial lake, along the canyons.
In addition to bathing from the Talhado floating boat, there is the option of continuing navigation in canoes that take small groups to a
In the crack known as Gruta do Talhado, the crack gets narrower and narrower until a mini Sanctuary to São Francisco de Assis at the end of it. The name Gruta do Talhado refers to its walls that appear to have been carved by hand. The huge walls with sandstone rocks have different shapes and a stunning look.
After swimming in the spectacular river, we continued to the Reserva do Castanho restaurant, a beautiful and relaxing place, with hammocks and
lounges for rest. The Castanho Ecological Reserve is located in the São Francisco Canyons. Its 1,500 hectare reserve is today the largest
caatinga area of Alagoas. The heart of MONA (São Francisco Natural Monument) is renowned, which elevates the status of an open-air school.
The ancestors did not allow civilization, with its mechanisms of progress, to attack this piece of caatinga. That's why,
today Castanho is the largest preserved area of this biome. With the filling of the lake at the Xingó Hydroelectric Plant in 1994, the remaining area of the old Castanho farm was transformed into the Castanho Ecological Reserve. Castanho is considered an open-air school. Its visitors have direct contact with the exuberance of the Caatinga biome. Wild animals live here and we occasionally come across Capybaras, Capuchin monkeys, King Vultures and other animals from our biome. In addition to bathing in the crystal clear waters of "Velho Chico", the brown restaurant offers a menu that highlights the flavors of the hinterland, the best of world music (the sound of water, wind and birds) and a large space for contemplation and leisure .
There is a proposal to create a geopark, the São Francisco Cânion Geopark, presented to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), by the Geological Service of Brazil, which if installed, would boost preservation, geotourism and
sustainable regional development. But even without the geopark, the region already offers countless attractions.

Until our next meeting.
