Paul Samwell-Smith could absolutely shred a bass. Alas the business world took him from us . Lol I Remember I was in high school when Clapton released his album slowhand . I thought to myself "Oh , he playing for old people now" He peaked with Cream . I describe him as a dandy .

These recordings are so old now they're museum pieces, and it's sometimes hard to appreciate them using 2023 ears. I'm old enough that I barely remember hearing late 60's bands like The Doors and Badfinger when they were still around, and even they were a full generation or two removed from this era. But I still get a kick out of listening to the pioneers of British rock (despite the often dodgy recordings!). Besides The Beatles my personal fave are The Who (Entwistle, duh), with The Yardbirds, The Kinks and The Zombies close behind. The band I've oddly struggled to get into is The Rolling Stones. Based on that article JP read it might be cool to track down a bootleg of The Yardbirds delivering an authentic rave-up -- if such a thing exists that doesn't sound like a potato! Someone put together a video with the Yardbirds playing this at the 1966 New Musical Express concert, followed by their appearance in "Blowup", after Chris Dreja had replaced Paul Samwell-Smith on bass and Jimmy Page had joined on second guitar. That's a pretty good rendition of the song. I like the rawness of it though I think the vocals weren't the best but the energy alone carries it through. I know their arrangement isn't based on the original but the song's strength has always been in its raw energy and excitement. If you give yourself a chance on your own or on here you should check out Tiny Bradshaw's rendition. It's a very rocking tune for the era and Tiny Bradshaw was a guy who was really old for that kind of musical attitude (in his 40s) but he rocked hard and had great energy.
