Yeah no I dont think bugs are the future either. We currently see processed plant based foods trending, such as the famous Beyond Burger, Beyond Sausages and other processed variants of plant based proteins and foods taking off. Personally Im a huge fan of these processed products myself as Im vegan (and they dont just appeal to vegans or vegetarians due to being so similar to rreal meat products, but also people who are accustomed to eating meat products and flexitarians), but yeah theyre not as healthy as whole plant foods obviously. That aside, synethic meats made from animal proteins are in development right now and if anything I see there being a higher likelihood of synethic meats potentially hitting off in 2050 than bugs. Id like to know what your thoughts on these trends (processed plant based foods and synthetic meat) are. Perhaps make a video on it? Just a suggestion :)

Also who’s going to convince the corporations to change? If a person doesn’t care about vegan options why would they go around advocating for a corporation to start supplying it. The people who advocate for vegan options are the people who are already vegan. You get corporations to change by changing the consumer and then the corporations will follow the money. I share a house with a few people, and I CONSTANTLY see a ton of wasted, good food. Like recently I found a good half kilo of tomatoes just rotting on our kitchen counter, also peppers and onions. They were just sitting there for over a month, shoved in a basket and just forgotten. And this is happening all the time just in our household, so imagine the scale of that. I mean, if you buy too much, there are so many ways to process these foods and preserve them for longer, like with these damn tomatoes, just freeze them, or preserve in olive oil, dry them, turn them into some tomato sauce and put in jars while hot, it will last. I'm just ranting about it because it pissed me off so bad, I can't 💀

Meat, eggs, and dairy are really important foods for anyone who isn't specifically cutting out one or more of those things from their diet. Meat, not counting processed crap, is very healthy. I think it's a little different when it comes to the climate impact of food because that's something we have more individual control over than for example public transport infrastructure and the sources of electricity. Governments do have the main responsibility for regulating food prices though (subsidies, taxes). But democratic governments won't do anything effective unless enough people are willing to change something in their own lives. My guess is that the mass production of lab grown meat & dairy will be necessary to make diet changes realistic for most people. But I'm sure the farming lobby will try to paint it as some kind of artificial-chemical-devil stuff ...

It’s not a meat substitute like how plant based meats are but I think us westerners consider it a “substitute” because it takes the role that meats usually do for us, which is the main part of a dish and the protein of a dish. As a vegan for almost 6 years, I´m so amazed by this. At the moment, we can feed billions of animals, but not 8 billion people? in regards to what you said at the bottom, so many insects are already killed for plant farming/agriculture with, say mass pesticide use (and organic farms use carnivorous ladybugs) that it's been calculated a diet that includes insects and a plant based diet kill an equal number of insects. the fda has regulations on how much insect bits can sneak into food and for example: up to 100 ant bits can be in a pizza, it's estimated the average american eats 2 pounds of flies and maggots a year without realizing it, etc.etc. have you ever bought certain produce like an apple and then seen insect bits in it? because i've seen stuff like antennae residue of some kind on my apples before considering some insects don't even really have a central nervous system and with how they're already eating so goddamn much insects (plenty more than the average person if you're fully plant based) and considering their relatively low intelligence/sentience i wouldn't say it should be a huge point of worry for vegans

If you don’t live in a food desert it’s actually rather simple once you know what to look for and avoid. If you still struggle then a lot of trusted online services ship high quality seafood in packaging that keeps it fresh and cold. I also like making sure a good portion of all the vegetarian groceries I purchase are farmed organic. And yeah you’re right- even our closest living cousins _(Chimps & Bonobos)_ eat additional animal protein and not just bugs. Chimps will even make spears to hunt smaller primates like monkeys. Furthermore I still fail to comprehend why MORE pressure is put on consumers to make “conscious” decisions than the corporations & industries who are the ones engaging in practices that are directly destroying the planet. Another concern that I have with eating bugs - and one I don't think I've ever heard anyone bring up - is how allergenic are they? I have a potentially deadly allergy to shellfish - and I should clarify, because of how pointlessly broad that English term is, that I'm specifically allergic to arthropods. We have a long history of eating "ocean bugs" as it were - crab, shrimp, lobster - and these are well known as one of the most prominent, and most deadly, of allergies in the world. There isn't much research, but a random study I found just now suggests that as many as _13%_ of people could have allergic reactions to eating insects! As they are closely related to shrimp and crab, or at least more closely related than anything else we eat, this really isn't a surprising outcome, and one that really needs a _lot_ more attention before things like cricket powder become anywhere close to mainstream...

Insects and crustaceans (shrimp, crabs, lobsters) are all arthropods, they are very similar physiologically. Similar to how we don't like the idea of eating Dogs and Horses because they're seen as companions, not food. It's a cultural attitude. Bugs are not just snacks in many rural African and SEA areas, they make up something like 60% of diets in some rural African countries. There are also already large industrial cricket farms, they've been a thing since the 90s, as well as mealworm farms. We farm bugs already for things other than food (Reptile feed, Fishing etc)

i think eating bugs only sounds unreasonable and gross because it's novel. Consuming cows milk to the extent westerners do would probably sound unreasonable and gross to us if it wasn't part of our culture

i don't get why some people would prefer bugs to plant based protein sources, bugs aren't even that much better than regular meat in terms of environment or health

Yeah, I don't think bugs are ever going to become a main food that we eat. There's always going to be meat, but even if the government is somehow able to greatly restrict meat without just being overthrown, people will always: - own their own animals - go fishing - go hunting - tofu/lentils/beans/mushrooms are high protein options ... and more.

Eating bugs wouldn't be so bad if those bugs were like shrimp or crawfish or any of the acceptable little critters.

tiny asian scorpions are kind of similar to shrimp, shown at 4:44. thoughts on those? ask me i would eat those (especially if they could be covered in chocolate or something like insects often are, in a lot of countries too) and i've had crickets before and they're sort of just nothing with a side of crunch and others are just flat out gross and bitter but they apparently actually taste good and big scorpions are basically just lobster equivalents if you already eat those (i thought lobster was gross when i was a kid though, so hey)
