I love that Dom writes this very serious scary story and the players just play the most comedy characters they can ^_^ It's very Terry Pratchett :D

It's an absolute testament to Dom's skill I feel. Call of Cthulhu should be creepy but no-one (except NRB Tom) likes playing creepy characters over funny characters. For Dom to allow four players each to have fun with their character quirks and still maintain an atmosphere of spookiness is demonstrative of his ability as Keeper.

3:16:40 is such an incredible example of good roleplay. Tom essentially set himself up to be shot and lose a huge amount of his hitpoints, and went ahead with it because it's what his character would do.

I had to come back and compliment this because youtube app crashed at the end of the episode. :) #1 - Dom is fast becoming one of my favorite storytellers for online RPGs, his range of character and ability to manage player chaos is great. #2 - This is quite possibly the best use I have ever seen of the King in Yellow, most gms fall into a booga-booga monster pattern without understanding the gothic horror background of the character, its actually pre-Lovecraft and dates to 1895 by an author called Robert W Chambers for those of you who want to check it out. #3 - the final twist of the knife is the perfect Carcossa ending, and is beautifully executed by Dom. Every gag, every out of control player moment changes from comedy to horror, and the players don't realize it till its too late. The King in yellow isn't a tentacle monster our to eat you, or an uncaring cosmic entity. He's personal. He wants you to be your most magnificent self. Its just that sometimes the the most magnificent version of you, is the most magnificent disaster.
@Blisterdude123

Yeah, post-Lovecraft inclusion of KiY in the Mythos just turns him into another boring wobbly space monster. I much prefer the ideas of what he could have been before he got lumped in with Lovecraft.
@WhizzerdSupreme
@WhizzerdSupreme 2 ай бұрын
KiY isn't a scary tentacle monster in the Mythos though, it's still just a play. The High Priest Not To Be Described isn't the KiY, nor is Hastur, although the latter has links to it. Whereas the King in Yellow is basically just a hallucination by the criminally insane.

There is a scenaro that you follow along as it is with most pen and paper RPGs, you usually push your players into right direction with clues that are in the scenario like a NPC or a book. There are different endings depending on what players know and were able to prevent.

@@mwwwfc2918 its a reference to The King in Yellow, a story actually not by Lovecraft, but with the same kind of cosmic horror theme, in it there's a mysterious figure in yellow that has a face looking like a mask but isn't and a play which is also called The King in Yellow which drives you insane when you read it
@d36class
@d36class 3 ай бұрын
@@mwwwfc2918 So not Lovecraft but Robert Chambers created the concept of The King in Yellow and the Yellow Sign. The King in Yellow is a play that drives the reader or viewer mad. Often times the person doesn't realize they are going mad and believe things are happening (as shown in the game conclusion). A common connection between Chamber's stories is someone inevitably asking "Have you seen the Yellow Sign?" or "Have you read The King in Yellow?" So pretty much now anytime something is Lovecraftian (related to the Cthulhu Mythos) and there is yellow, that's pretty much a tell tale sign (lol yellow sign) of Hastur. Some of the characters in this one-shot are from "The Repairer of Reputations" by Machen

This campaign was so much fun. I love Chaotic Neutral and Mystery Quest and I hope these collabs aren't a one time thing, probably not common or anything but I really hope they happen every once in a while as a treat.

For people just discovering Dom and/or Call of Cthulhu via this video, make sure you go and listen to The Apocalypse Players, the podcast he is part of. Absolutely the highest quality Call of Cthulhu podcast around and the rest of the cast are all excellent as well. They take turns running so Dom isn't always Keeper, but if you think his NPCs are good just wait until you see what he can do when he gets to focus on a single character.

Brilliant. Genuinely creepy in parts. I put it on to watch as I played Dorfromantik and it turned 30min game into a 4 hour one. Will be interesting to see how much Laurie’s Mr Strickland creeps me out when I rewatch it.

Really great oneshot! First intro into this group (thanks to my recommended vids catching Tom in the title), and I'm definitely loving how it scratches that same itch as Mystery Quest. Also, the subtleties in the sound design were superb! So much attention to detail, it really felt immersive.

The thing I love about this episode is that there's all sorts of Easter eggs for fans of the King in Yellow lore, and yet the players genuinely seem to be unfamiliar with it, and so don't really get what they're in for, which is a refreshing change from hearing seasoned CoC players who immediately back away from anything to do with the King in Yellow.

Tom is a big fan of Lovecraftian mythos, I would be surprised if he didn't get at least a couple references, but he could have been too deep in his method 😂

@@shynarcissist Ah, that's cool. But the emphasis is definitely on the 'seem to be' - they all immerse themselves so well in their characters I can't tell. But I guess they are professional actors/presenters.
