The Yeomans Plow at work

First time using a P A Yeomans plow on contour & learning the principles of Keyline design. Trying to capture water at the highest point & combing it outwards towards the ridges.

Hi, you may think about getting Yeomans books, as edited with later data by his son. I don’t know where you are, but think about talking to his son. Yeomans was ever a commercial farmer, achieving sustainable out the gate income was his aim.

No, way earlier than the 60s, Yeomans initial experiments were at Richmond nsw, then, after his brother and co-farmer was killed, he moved to the Kiawa Valley. His son still runs the company, his books are very good and should be compulsory reading for all people on land. Only thing, Yeomans didn’t have the scientific training to understand micro nutrients and essential minerals.

Hey Anthony. Thanks for your input. I’ve been reading most of the literature around P A Yeoman & agree it should be compulsory reading. Have seen some good results with the way water soaks in & travels on what I’ve done so far as compared with what hasn’t been treated. Over time l should be able to get deeper as we break compaction & build our soil. 🍻

Btw, PA Yeomans son has continued experimentation and, check with him, conclude the “gradual increase in depth” over time IS NOT the way to go, he now goes to full depth immediately, taking an initial hit in output for a greater and faster benefit.

The very best experience you can have is to watch rainfall on ground you have put to the Yeomans plot, it acts very very differently, then, see Springs emerge spontaneously after you do it for a year or two.

Thanks Adam Yep working it out & learning as l go. I had a regenerative landscape designer give me some tips. Already seeing results from what I’ve done. Have worked out running it off contour slightly to direct flow to ridges. Thanks for watching & appreciate the input. 🍻

umm, no bro. The idea of the yeomans plow was not to drive it on contour,,,although you can if you want to. The idea was to drive parallel to the keyline contour, which will actually take you on a slightly downhill journey to the ridge. the water will move to the ridge if you do it that way- what you've done should go pretty well anyways,,,,,maybe next year conditions will allow you to go down a few inches deeper on the true keyline pattern

I reckon you can go a bit faster than that to get the "boat bough wave effect" ,,,, just say you were going 3 km per hour in that vide, you could easily bump it up to 4.5 to 5 km/h

Hey Adam. It’s a balance working out what works best. I’ve now done 2 paddocks, waiting for a bit of moisture to build up before l do some more. The soil varies quite a-bit across the paddock from top to bottom with differences in compaction & sometimes rocks of varying sizes. If l ran a bit too fast & hit a rock or hard section it would pull me up dead or start to loose traction & l broke a couple of shear pins. I think over time as we break the compaction & build soil we should be able to go a wee bit faster. The next 2 paddocks that I’ll be doing are very different in terrain & some of the ridges have surface rocks that will need to be avoided. I’ll find out what’s 6 to 8” below. I’ll also have to be a bit better with surveying to get the right lines. 🍻
