After a few days, I finally managed to fully charge and top balance the Yixiang DIY box loaded with EVE LF280K cells (also delivered by Yixiang). These were the 'special' cells we have tested before which showed some premature voltage increase while charging. Can we see something similar while top balancing the pack and also during discharging for the capacity test?

2:30 - I have a similiar experience with an EVE grade A cell pack. Yes grade A, the qr codes are from 1 day and 1 plant and 1 assembly line but even there there is a weakes cell and another 2nd weakest cell which kick in during discharge or rather start decreasing earlier than the others. If i discharge with 20 A which is about 1000 W then I can note the time the cell passes a certain mark like 3.1 Volt and how long it takes till i kicks the undervoltage proctection of 2,5 V In that case I have a figure how many minutes this fast cell is ahead of the others. If I assume the other 15 would discharge the same way on the last mile from 3.1 V then we are talking about 30 minutes or 1/2 hour. This cell than would cost me 1/2 hour x 1000 W or 0,5 kWh capacity of the whole battery. Regardless how good all others could be the weakest determines and kills the capacity. It took quite a while to get the setup properly and discharge at a constant rate to get comparable results. At the end I charge fully over 3 days and then started a discharge party at 1500 W which meant to get through the party in that night in 8 hours before dawn. And then I added those cells from the bat mon integration into a home assistant report and the issues became visible. 1 fast discharger or runaway and another one following a bit behind, while 10 others are very simiiar, 4 are a tiny bit off and those to runaway cells. at the end I wanna enjoy the 13,5 kWh I have instead of complaining about 0,8 kWh missing. I had fun to build the EEL V4 DIY and it worked out so far - let us wait and see how the battery will perform over next 8000 charges and discharges. And one fine day we will find a nice reliable dealer selling cells that are really grade A and perform together as if they were twins.

😮😮!WARNING!😮😮 The YIXIANG box has 50mm² cable coming from the BMS to the cable connector! It has a 200A BMS. To be able to pull 200A it should AT LEAST have a 70mm² cable (95mm² is adviced for 200A) CHANGE the 50mm² cable!!!😮 - This is a FIRE HAZZARD! - According to the NEC specification, when you choose aluminum, a wire gauge of 2/0 AWG is best for your 200 amp. However, for copper clads and copper wiring, the electrical installation regulation body recommends you go for 4/0 AWG

Hallo Andy, your battery was now top balanced once. The interesting part would be how the cells behave at the next few cycles. I would suggest to charge the battery for the tests with constant current instead with the fence solar system. It would be hard to detect abnormal curves with an inconsistent current.

Hi Andy. Thank you for this research. I find the home assist very interesting. I still have to go into the basement to view the BMS over the phone. I don't know if you've made a video of that yet. or maybe I missed that one. Which home assistant do you use for this? Im also using the lf280k. But now only charging to 55,2V. first time i went to 57,6. The balancing took 2 days here with a victron mp2 3000. Yes we had bad weather. The system is running great now. And we switched to a victron mp2 5000 for faster charging in a shorter period. Prost. and enjoy your jagermeister ;). Thank you for all your clear help and explanation

The famous pool fence is still alive so it must be end of winter down under. I like the visualisation provided by the bat mon integration in home assistant cause they simply show the real world battery cell performances compared with the china craker ZKE Tech single cell results. They were not really helpfull nor great, I wasted a lot of time for 2 batteries charging these cells and measuring the capacity over and over again. The only experience I gained from that testing battery (partly I had tested the wweakest cells over 20 times) is that the cell capacity increased by most of the cells and all of the weakest ones. It made a difference of 1,5 to 2% from first round of testing to 20th round of the same test. Roughly 80% of the cells showed this behaviour and 20% not , the good ones stayed where they had been. And then I learned about the impact of temperature. Below 15°C you get significant lower results. So I moved to another testing spot where the heating was working and I had 25°C more or less in a 24 to 26°C range. Since then I got perfect matching results based on comparision of cell X during test cycle 12 to 20. Before that the temperature had an impact and results were far lower.

Yes, the 2A balancer is great but also has its limitations. Especially if several cells are close to 3.65V, it has almost no chance unless the charge current is very small. The 'normal' capacitive balancers do a better job here as they work on all cells simultaneously.

Wow, thanks for showing the numbers as you top balanced that pack with an active balancer. Everyone needs a Batmon/HA setup. What you have shown, is that you have so much more precision in terms of diagnosing battery/pack issues when you can collate all those cell values. Another interesting parameter would be to measure and collate the current thru the balance wires for each cell. Maybe one day. Any system without an active balancer should be regarded as half baked, especialy if you use all the battery capacity. I have an offgrid 15kWh pack that had a passive balancer that couldnt keep up and eventually had a 200mV deltaV at 56V. Slapped on a 2A JK standalone active balancer and set balancer to come on when delta V > 20mV ( no ability to set 3.4V) then > 10mV and let it run whilst living off grid using about 4kWhr overnight. Took 3 months for deltaV to get < 10mV at 56V. No run away cells or BMS tripping. So top active balancing can be done while you begin to use your pack but it may take a long time.

Wow, 15 kWh is a lot. I have expanded my solar with two more panels on the shed. Now close to 7600 Wp in multiple directions. About 8 months of the year 5 kWh should be quite enough to make it through the night, and in 2 months of winter there is simply not enough left to even top those up. Would it make any sense for me to get a battery this big? It seems very cheap to build apart from the Victron gear, which I could replace with a hybrid inverter from Growatt that will keep the grid meter at 0 amps as much as possible. I could get a dynamic contract, but then I will need a more expensive system and a huge battery for the sunny hours that the energy price goes negative.

Thank you Andy for this video. This is a very timely one for me because my LFP battery, after 6 months in operation is starting to get a deviation of 250+ mV near the top of the charge. Unfortunately by BMS is passive balance but have been wondering if its a bad cell or if the pack just needs to be properly balanced. After some great suggestions from forum members on another website, and now after seeing this video, i'm thinking there is nothing wrong with my pack, just that it needs proper balancing which is a skill thats still fairly new to me but has become a lot less confusing thanks to all your great videos and help from some others. Looking to get a plug in active balancer soon to help out.

When your BMS reaches above a certain amount of cycled capacity BATmon wont give proper data anymore unless you reset the bms stats. SOC, Power, temp, voltage and charge will be misreported/missing. individual cell voltages will still be available but that will be the only usable data.

Hallo Andy, one thought about the balancer: It is not really putting 2A from the highest to the lowest cell. It ist putting 2A into a capacitor and afterwards putting 2A from the capacitor into the lowest cell. In total average there are only around 1A transfered from one cell to another !

Just wondering what is the heat gain on that coiled extension? Apparently figures 8 will not result in heat gain.
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia Ай бұрын
First comment, so 🥇 There is no heat building up. This has nothing to do with the shape or form and how the cable is coiled up but only about the heat radiation between the cable and the air. The smaller you coil, the more cable you have in the same space and therefore it gets warmer. What you mean is heat by induction, but we have L and N in one cable so the electrical fields will offset mostly.
