I had a sneak peek into a couple of future episodes in this series and things had changed drastically. There were only three characters left who were in the episodes up to now; and those were the Shogun (of course), Ooka Tadasuke the Shogun's right hand man and Officer of the law. Tatsugoro who is the Fire Chief was getting older but was still fiesty and always getting in fights. Tatsugoro's wife Osai (the shrill voiced busy-body) had been replaced by someone who is not nearly as entertaining. Saburo Kitajima who played the Fire Chief remained right up to the end of the series. Osono (the pretty secret agen and Shogun bodyguard) plus Sukehatchi the male bodyguard were replaced by many bodyguard male/females over the 25 year life of the series.

You're basing judgements of a country's historical policies off of a television show that already deviates from the real life history of Tokugawa Yoshimune. It's ok to have fun and be entertained by television fiction, but don't let it warp your perspective on reality or blind you to the problems. Even taking the show itself at face value it portrays a very dire government where the shogun has to face new corrupt officials every week for 831 episodes until retirement. It is a historical fantasy and must be taken as such.

I watch this series from the beginning and each time the fight scene unfolds the same way. I don't understand why in these scenes the shogun turns the katana to not attack with the edge but only with the back of the blade. Moreover in the fights those who are behind him never attack him when he is busy in front, it is not realistic at all
